seien genannt: 1x0/0 AlSb (rund 20/0 Al, 90j, Sb) Rest Ag, 90g0 Cu5Sb2 (rund 6".r0
Cu, 4% Sb) Rest Ag, 150/0 Zn3Sb2 (rund 701o Zn, 8% Sb) Rest Ag, 180;0 Cd3Sb2 (rund
Refinable and non-refinable antimony-containing silver alloys Antimony as an additive to various alloys of silver has been recommended in the specialist literature, especially for permanent pens. In general, the fragility which antimony additives tend to impart to silver has deterred its use. Thorough experiments have now shown that the antimonides of the metals copper (Cu [Sb, Cu5Sb2, Cu2Sb), zinc (Zn3Sb2, ZnSb), cadmium (Cd, Sb2, CdSb) and aluminum (AlSb) are dissociated with the simultaneous presence of the necessary metals also form in the silver bath and are not decomposed by the silver. For this purpose, the antimony additions in the case of additions of copper, zinc, cadmium, aluminum or mixtures must be measured in such a way that the antimonides of these metals are essentially (that is, as precisely as one can determine the composition in practice). It has also been found that these antimonides are taken up by the silver crystals with solid solution formation up to maximum amounts which vary between about 8 and 18%, namely the Copper antimonides up to about 8 0/0,
Zinc antimonides - - - 13%,
Cadmium antimonides - - - 18 0/0.
Aluminum antimonides - - - 90 / ()
(See the attached ternary diagrams, Figs. i to ¢), and that they give both pure silver and the usual technical alloys predominantly made of silver extraordinary mechanical resistance if the composition is close to the stated amounts. Examples of such alloys are: 1x0 / 0 AlSb (around 20/0 Al, 90j, Sb) remainder Ag, 90g0 Cu5Sb2 (around 6 ".r0 Cu, 4% Sb) remainder Ag, 150/0 Zn3Sb2 (around 701o Zn , 8% Sb) remainder Ag, 180; 0 Cd3Sb2 (around 10 "jo Cd, 80, f0 Sb) remainder Ag. The saturation limit of the mixed crystals depends on the temperature. If the saturation limits mentioned are exceeded by a few percent, then suitable heat treatment, namely annealing, which usually has to be carried out above 700 °, in individual cases only above 500 °, with subsequent rapid cooling and then the onset of short tempering at i 5o cause up to 300 precipitates from the mixed crystals in a suitable, favorable degree of dispersion, which start an optimum of strength and ductility at the same time or, conversely, cause existing deposits to reabsorb in the silver crystals, in such a way that the plasticity of the alloys is increased for processing purposes . will. For this purpose, heating is carried out to temperatures which, if possible, are not higher than the temperature of the incipient mobility in the space lattice, namely 300 °. The less you exceed this temperature, the longer you have to continue heating until the final softening, and the greater the final success achieved. Thus, in the case of the alloy of the first-mentioned example, the finishing treatment just described can increase the hardness from 8 5 to iio brinell and also. lower it to 6o for the sake of easy manageability.
