Description
Method for operating internal combustion engines In internal combustion engines with self-ignition is known to be the fuel in those with high-compression and strongly heated air-filled cylinder near dead center below so high Pressure introduced that it instantly atomizes, causing an almost instantaneous burn begins. The previously widely used process, injecting fuel into the fuel Atomizing by means of high pressure compressed air is abandoned because of its disadvantages and the pressure required for atomization is now generated on pure mechanical way as high hydraulic pressure in a nozzle. This procedure too does not yet represent a perfect solution, because the generation of the at least about 3oo atm. amount of atomization pressure available for high-speed runners short time (corresponding to a crank angle of 16 ') considerable mechanical difficulties, especially for driving the high pressure injection pump. Try, To carry out injection and atomization of the fuel individually one after the other and here the fuel at low pressure, for example during the suction or Compression strokes to introduce into the cylinder have not had lasting success.
According to the invention, the injection and atomization should now be carried out on one completely new way to be undertaken, namely the fuel through a atomized into high-frequency, especially superacoustic vibrations displaced body will. The phenomenon known per se is used here, that high-frequency Vibrations, their number between the audible vibrations and the thermal vibrations (i.e. more than about 20000 / s), strong mechanical effects suddenly trigger can. In the present case, these effects are expressed in the following way; that the on Fuel applied to such a vibrating body suddenly turned into a haze is atomized. The nature of this atomizing vibrating body is in itself arbitrary, but one appropriately selects a suitable, non-conductive and heat-resistant one Material with a high natural frequency, e.g. B. quartz, which by an electrical High frequency current is set in oscillation. The effect occurs when the tuning of the vibrations is done so that between the frequency of the electrical Field and the natural frequency of the vibrating body is resonance because in this case an amplitude maximum is achieved.
The oscillating body, i.e. the quartz plate, can either be in the cylinder itself or in a special capsule connected to the cylinder through openings to be ordered.
The method according to the invention can be carried out in various ways Way. So it is possible to use the fuel with comparatively low Pressure in top dead center or in its vicinity as a closed jet on the oscillating Apply body, whereby the fuel is instantly atomized. One can but also the fuel ready $ during the suction stroke or at the beginning of the compression stroke or, in the case of two-stroke machines, during the flushing process Apply the vibrating body at rest and then the latter only in the make top dead center or near it vibrate and so the one on the Suddenly atomize fuel in the body.
The high-frequency current required to generate the vibrations is expediently taken from a generator driven by the internal combustion engine and by means of a suitable distributor to the vibrators of the cylinders switched.
Four embodiments of the invention are shown schematically in the drawing shown.
According to Fig. = A quartz plate = is used as the vibrating body, which in the insulating body 2 are designed in the manner of a high-voltage spark plug Power feedthrough is attached. The electrodes are used to generate the vibrations 3 and q., Which are excited by a high-frequency machine, not shown here. At the moment when the piston of the internal combustion engine is at its top Approaching dead center, the nozzle 6 to be atomized is applied against the vibrating plate i through the nozzle 6 Fuel injected as a closed jet under comparatively low pressure; when the beam hits the plate i, an instantaneous extraordinary occurs fine atomization.
According to Fig. 2, the quartz plate i is in a special capsule? housed, which through openings 8 with the combustion chamber 9 of the cylinder in connection stands. The quartz plate i is on the one hand with the capsule 7 and thus with the metal body of the cylinder in contact, while 3 'forms the counter electrode, its connection similar to Fig. i through a spark plug insulator 2 to the outside.
The fuel is applied to the plate i by means of the nozzle 6 already during the suction stroke, while the atomization takes place as soon as in the vicinity of the dead center, the electrodes are excited by the high-frequency current. To achieve the full effect, it is necessary that between the natural frequency the quartz plate i and the frequency of the electric field resonance occurs. at the atomization ignites the fuel on the hot one in the capsule Combustion air, and due to the pressure increase that occurs as a result, the any remaining uncombusted fuel through the bores 8 into the main combustion chamber and find the amount of air required for complete combustion here.
Fig.3 shows a form of implementation of the concept of the invention in machines with several, for example 3 cylinders. The latter are in the drawing with io denotes and have the valves controlled in a known manner ii. To the generation the high-frequency current is used, for example, at the front end of the crankshaft Generator 15, which at the same time carries the starting device 16 for the machine. With i2, the one caused by gears is 1q. inevitably driven distributors, which leads the current through the cables 13 to the individual cylinders. These cables 13 are introduced into the cylinder in isolation at 2, expediently in a similar manner Way as shown in fig. I and 2.
The fuel is here through the channel 17 introduced into the combustion chamber 18 while precompressed through the duct ig Air is introduced. After the atomization of the fuel by the oscillating Plate i is done, the combustion gases enter at high pressure or high speed through the nozzle 2o out of the chamber 18 and act on the turbine wheel 21.
