According to the invention, a drive system for a road vehicle includes:
an engine in the form of an engine drivable by the combustion of a fuel;
an electric generator drivingly connected to the engine and driven by the engine;
an electrochemical energy storage battery, which is connected elec trically via a charge control device with the genera tor and can be charged by the generator; and
an electric motor electrically connected to the battery via a power controller and drivable by the battery, the battery including a plurality of high-temperature electrochemical energy storage cells electrically interconnected, each cell having a cathode in the form of an electron conductive electrolyte-permeable porous material impregnated with an alkali metal-aluminum halide salt melt electrolyte molten at the operating temperature of the cell; an electrochemically active cathode substance in the form of a transition metal halide selected from the group consisting of Fe , Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Cu and mixtures thereof, dispersed in the porous interior of the matrix, the cell having an alkali metal alkanoic active substance melted at the operating temperature of the cell and the anode substance from the K athode and the molten salt electrolyte is separated by a separator, which is a conductor for the alkali metal of the anode, wherein the generator, the battery, the controller or the Kon control device and the electric motor are connected to each other ver, such that the generator, the battery load and the electric motor both separately and simultaneously can drive, and such that the electric motor by the battery and the generator both separately and si multan drivable, the cells of the battery Kathm denmatrices th in the form of laterally compressed Plat th and sheets of thickness 0.5-5 mm and these matrices have a volumetric energy density of 0.2-0.6 Ah / cm 3 .

The battery can have a capacity of 20-40 kWh, the generator having a power output of 20-40 kWh has, the plates have a thickness of 2-5 mm and these matrices have a gravimetric energy density of 0.2-0.4 Ah / g respectively.

On a graph of the matrix volumetric energy density in Ah / cm 3 versus the matrix thickness in mm, these matrices can be characterized by falling within the bounds of a triangle whose vertices have the following coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,60.6 0,50.5 0,20.2 0,50.5 0,20.2 5,05.0

Vorzugsweise werden auf dieser graphischen Darstellung die Matrices dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie in das Innere der Umgrenzung eines Dreiecks fallen, dessen Ecken die folgenden Koordinaten haben:Preferably, in this graph, the Matrices characterized in that they are in the interior of the Bordering a triangle fall whose corners the following Have coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,5250.525 1,01.0 0,2250.225 1,01.0 0,2250.225 4,54.5

In other words, the plates are characterized by having a thickness and a volumetric energy density such that on a graph of the plate thickness in mm versus the volumetric energy density in Ah / cm 3, these plates penetrate into the confines of a Triangles whose corners have the following coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,60.6 0,50.5 0,20.2 0,50.5 0,20.2 5,05.0

Thus, the plates preferably have a thickness and a Volumetric energy density such that these plates in the Inside of a triangle fall, whose corners are the following Have coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,5250.525 1,01.0 0,2250.225 1,01.0 0,2250.225 4,54.5

The control device or the controller can be of the usual Be the type of voltage and / or current used by the Battery is supplied to the engine, adjusted to the the To control engine fed energy, and she (s) is preferably of the type that is a back-breaking brake or current brake allowed, as in the prior art is known and she (s) can, if desired, a DC power supply from the battery to a Convert AC power to the motor and vice versa during this recovery braking.

The term "generator" is here in the broadest sense ver used to cover also alternators.

What the battery for their own use as in the city or suburban use of a passenger car or a limousine, it should have a useful capacity of 15-25 kWh to have. For a battery of cells of the question in question This type is preferably at a height of Entla Up to 70% available and will be at a maximum Power output size of 40-80 kW for at least 15 minutes issued. In other words, the battery can be a Kapa have a capacity of 15-25 kWh, which can be before reaching a discharge level of 70%. Accordingly, the battery should preferably have a theoretical capacity from 20-35 kWh with a maximum power output in the Size of 40-80 kW, which lasts for at least 15 minutes, respectively. For vehicles of the type in question assumed that this capacity has an adequate range of at least 100-150 km provides, the elek trical motor is powered only by the battery and to a discharge height of 0-70% when the turbine z. B. due to considerations regarding pollutants.

As stated above, the magnitude or Geschwin is ability to recharge the battery, based on the generator power output power size.

Kleine Personenkraftwagen bzw. Small passenger cars or sedans of the type in question for extra-urban use at this level require a range of about 5 hours at a cruising speed of about 120-160 km / h. This determines the size of the fuel tank and indicates that a generator output power of 20-40 kW would be acceptable, with the generator alone driving the electric motor directly. The battery should thus be capable of receiving charges of 20-40 kW. A bat terie of cells of the type described above can prin ciple reach these rates of charge, in particular for Kathm denmatrices of 1-5 mm, preferably from 2 to 4.5 mm thick and with a volumetric energy density of 0.225-0525 Ah / cm 3 at least a discharge height of up to 70%. Thus, the battery may be capable of receiving charge of 20-40 kW at a discharge height of up to 70%.

It follows that the electric motor for recording an electric power supply (from the generator) of 20-40 kW (for continued traveling at this level) should be, for hill climbs he should pick up both the maximum electric power output from the generator as well as being capable of the battery so that it nominally be calculated for a 40-80 kW electrical power supply would.

While the engine may be selected from suitable internal combustion engines and external combustion engines, typically employing a hydrocarbonaceous liquid fuel such as a fossil fuel, the engine may be designed to operate at a constant speed and low The cost, weight, volume and environmental pollution run or work, the engine preferably being a turbine using a liquid fuel. Such turbines may be designed or selected for a suitable power output so that they are of acceptable low mass and volume and may be used for use on road vehicles for small passenger cars with a mass of 1000-1500 kg. Thus, the engine may be a turbine that is konstru ated, to run at a constant speed of little least 100,000 U / min -1, during a liquid Koh lenwasserstoffbrennstoff is burned.

For smaller passenger cars or limousines is on taken that a generator with a power output rated power of 20-40 kW will be suitable, the Lei turbine output is accordingly calculated nominally, taking into account the efficiency of the generator and the Charging characteristics of the battery.

The invention relates to a road vehicle with a Drive system as described above, wherein the Vehicle at least one drive wheel and a transmission or power transmission or a power shift transmission, causing the output of the electric motor with is connected to each drive wheel of the vehicle.

The road vehicle may be a passenger car or a Saloon with a mass of 1000-1500 kg.

The invention also relates to a method for Driving a road vehicle as described above is the burning of a combustible fuel to drive the motor, the motor genes drives the generator, and wherein the generator electrical energy at least one of the battery or the electric one Motor supplies, and the electric motor electrical energy from at least one of the battery or the genera tor and, finally, the electric motor at least one drive wheel of the vehicle over the vehicle Power transmission drives.

Usually, the vehicle is a variety of drive wheels, which are driven, have.

Verschiedene Merkmale von Zellen, die für Batterien des in Frage stehenden Typs geeignet sind und ihre Elektrochemie werden in den US-Patenten 4 546 055, 4 529 676, 4 560 627, 4 592 969, 4 722 875 und 4 772 449, 4 797 332, 4 797 333, 4 975 344 und 5 051 324; und in der veröffentlichten briti schen Patentanmeldung 2193837A beschrieben.Different characteristics of cells used for batteries of the Questionable type are suitable and their electrochemistry US Pat. Nos. 4,546,055, 4,529,676, 4,560,627, US Pat. 4 592 969, 4 722 875 and 4 772 449, 4 797 332, 4 797 333, 4,975,344 and 5,051,324; and in the published briti patent application 2193837A.

In particular, the cathode matrix may be a transition metal such as porous iron, nickel, chromium, cobalt or manganese and the active cathode substance may be FeCl 2 , NiCl 2 , CrCl 2 , CoCl 2 , MnCl 2 or CuCl 2 . The alkali metal of the anode is preferably sodium, the separator is β-Alumi niumoxid, in particular β '' - alumina or Nasicon. Instead, alkali metal ion-conducting polymeric membranes can be used as flexible plate separators selected to conduct the alkali metal of the anode. For cost reasons, it is believed that the appropriate active cathode substance for the cells of the battery will be Fe / FeCl 2 .

As the liquid electrolyte, an electrolyte of the type MAlHal 4 , wherein M is an alkali metal and Hal is a halogen, z. As NaAlCl 4 used. In these electrolytes, the molar ratio of Al ions should not exceed the molar ratio of alkali metal ions, that is, the molar ratio of Al: M should not be greater than 1: 1. This can be achieved by ensuring that the cathode compartment contains a proportion of solid alkali metal halide (MHal) in contact with the liquid electrolyte during all charge stages of the cell.

With respect to MAlHal 4 type electrolytes such as NaAlCl 4 wherein the Al: M ratio is not more than 1: 1, it is a particular advantage that, in addition to providing substantial insolubility of active cathode subsites such as FeCl 2 , NiCl 2 , CrCl 2 , CoCl 2 or MnCl 2 therein, when the Al: M ratio is 1: 1, such electrolytes also show their minimum vapor pressure at the cell operating temperatures typically encountered (which is much less) is that of sulfur / sodium sulfide / polysulfide) when this Al: M ratio is 1: 1. This is important from a constructive and safety point of view, since flat, thin plates of z. B. β '' - alumina, which are typically used in the thin cathode matrices of Zel len of batteries that are suitable for the invention, can be brittle and the destruction by high electrolyte vapor pressures, especially during Tem peraturüberschreitungen, z. B. caused by cell malfunction, subject. Furthermore, such electrolytes show relatively moderate freeze-thaw voltages on the separator plates, and another feature of such electrolyte is that the alkali metal and the electrolyte react in the event of a separator failure to produce solid reaction products at the temperatures in question, e.g. Me metallic aluminum and solid NaCl to form when Na reacts with NaAlCl 4 , wherein the Al: Na molar ratio is 1: 1. All of these features permit a variety, and in fact a diversity, of the cells that are arranged in batteries, side by side, using relatively thin cathode structures and relatively thin separator plates with acceptable durability and resistance to separator failure and more acceptable Safety, even in the event of a separator failure gesta pelt.

Natürlich können andere geeignete flüssige Elektrolyten, z. B. andere Salzschmelzelektrolyten verwendet werden, vor ausgesetzt, daß sie Kationen des Alkalimetalls der Anode enthalten. Fig. 4 eine Ansicht, ähnlich zu den Fig. 2 und 3 einer anderen elektrochemischen Zelle, die für eine Batterie für ein Antriebssystem von Fig. 1 geeignet ist, zeigt. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figs. 2 and 3 of another electrochemical cell suitable for a battery for a drive system of Fig. 1;

In Fig. 1 of the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a drive system according to the invention for a passenger road vehicle (saloon) weighing approximately 1250 kg (not shown).

The system 10 includes a fuel tank 12 which is connected by a conduit 14 to a turbine 16 . The turbine is driven by liquid hydrocarbon fuel and is mounted on a shaft 18 which is supported by bearings 20 ge. The shaft 18 forms a power input for a generator 22 .

The generator 22 is verbun by electrical lines 24 via a suitable charge control device 25 to the poles 26 of a rechargeable energy storage cell 28 the. The poles 26 are in turn connected by electrical leads 30 to a suitable power control device 31 , which in turn is connected to these leads 30 to an electric motor 32 . For a DC motor, the controller or controller will include an AC converter or converter, and for an AC motor, the controller will include an inverter. The engine 32 has a power output shaft 34 leading to a transmission forming part of the transmission (not shown) of the vehicle.

In the example illustrated by FIG. 1, the turbine 16 has a theoretically calculated output of about 30 kW and the generator 22 in turn has an electrical output of about 25 kW, the generator having a design operating speed that is the same as that of the turbine 16 is.

The battery 28 in turn has a capacity of 30 kWh and is capable of being charged at a rate of 25 kW through the generator, at least at charge heights of up to 70%. The battery 28 is capable of delivering electrical energy during its discharge at discharge heights of up to 70% to the motor 32 at a rate of 50 kW. The motor 32 is capable of an electrical power consumption of 75 kW, ie the output of the generator 22 (25 kW) together with the maximum output of the battery 28 (50 kW) record.

The motor 32 is capable of driving the vehicle at 120 km at that level for at least 5 hours when receiving 25 kW from the generator 22 for a vehicle range of at least 600 km at the level when driven by the generator 22 done alone, drive. The battery, on the other hand, is able to drive itself at 110 km / h. to drive at this level, while 25 kW are supplied to the engine for at least one hour at discharge heights of 0 to 90%.

The vehicle is designed for mountain tours, to allow the battery 28, that they exceed 50 kW of Kontrolleinrich 31 and out from there to the engine 32 for at least 15 min in parallel with the generator feeding of 25 kW to the motor 32 can.

The vehicle is thus suitable for traffic both in the city and for overland trips. It has a range of more than 500 km at the level of overland travel when propelled by the generator 22 and the turbine 16 , and a range of more than 100 km in the city when driven only by the battery 28 . A turbine can be used that takes several minutes to get started and reaches its operating speed. During this time, the vehicle can be powered by the battery. When the vehicle is being driven by the turbine at speeds below these cruising speeds, consuming all of the 25 kW power output of the generator 22 , the excess energy from the turbine may be used to charge the battery 28 and keep it fully charged. However, the system may be equipped with electrical switching technology whereby, when the vehicle is driven at its cruising speed and below the nominally calculated or provided power output of the generator, the turbine 16 and generator 22 may be operated intermittently, e.g. B. only and whenever the battery falls below a pre-set Festge charge height, at least to charge the battery from time to time when required.

It is expected for practical purposes that the battery 28 can be made of electrochemical cells of the here described in large trains be typed cell type and that it has an active cathode material, the FeCl 2 is in its GE loaded state. The geometry of such cells may be of the type described below with reference to FIG. 2 having cathode structures with the nature of flat plates, presumably having a thickness of about 0.5-5 mm, typically with a thickness of 1-4.5 mm.

As far as loading of the cathode with FeCl 2 in the charged state is concerned, the porosity in the cathode matrix and the amount of FeCl 2 therein in the charged state should be such as to have a cathode capacity of 0.2 to 0.6 Ah / cm 3 , typically from 0.225-0.525 Ah / cm 3 , the values in gravimetric units being 0.2-0.6 Ah / g and 0.22-0.52 Ah / g, respectively, approximately on the volumes and respective masses based on the cathode matrices. Excessively high values of energy density do not allow the cells and the battery to reach the necessary high performance goals, whereas excessively low values do not reach the necessary low mass and low volume targets, whereby the battery and cells have a sufficient power output, coupled with a sufficiently low mass and volume. Suitable cell matrices, with reference to FIG. 1A, are characterized by having a combination of thickness and volumetric energy density falling within the bound of the triangle whose vertices have the following coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,60.6 0,50.5 0,20.2 0,50.5 0,20.2 5,05.0

Vorzugsweise fallen sie in das Innere der Umgrenzung des Dreiecks, dessen Ecken die folgenden Koordinaten haben:Preferably, they fall into the interior of the boundary of the Triangle whose vertices have the following coordinates:

Matrix-volumetrische Energiedichte (Ah/cm³)Matrix volumetric energy density (Ah / cm³) Matrixdichte (mm)Matrix density (mm) 0,5250.525 1,01.0 0,2250.225 1,01.0 0,2250.225 4,54.5

It is also desirable to design the β '' alumina solid electrolyte separator plates or sheets so that their area exposed to the flat plate cathodes is related to the cathode capacity according to the restriction, whereby Ah / cm 2 <0, 2, preferably <1.15 and more preferably at most 0.1 Ah / cm 2 .

The battery as a whole should have a volumetric energy density of <100 Wh / l and a gravimetric energy density of <100 Wh / kg.

Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown a sectional side view of the type of electrochemical cell intended for use in the battery 28 of the vehicle propulsion system of the invention.

In Fig. 2, the cell is generally indicated at 36. The cell 36 includes a molten sodium anode 38 , a β "-alumina solid electrolyte separator 40, and a cathode 42 in the form of a porous iron matrix which, in its charged state, disperses FeCl 2 therein and contains a molten NaAlCl 4 electrolyte impregnated therein. The FeCl 2 is in finely divided and / or thin layer form and the matrix in the charged state has a small amount of NaCl dispersed in solid form therein so that the NaCl: AlCl 3 molar ratio in the electrolyte is never less than 1: 1 is. Cell 36 , when viewed in the direction of arrows 46 , has a square-outline housing 44 , and the housing is provided with anode and cathode poles (not shown) that are electronically connected to anode 38 and the matrix of cathode 42, respectively are connected. The matrix of the cathode 42 is in contact with the separator 40 and the cell is shown in its charged state with the sodium anode 38 substantially filling the compartment within which it is contained.

The housing 44 is divided by the separator 40 into an anode compartment 46 containing the sodium 38 and into a cathode compartment 48 containing the cathode 42 . The Ge housing 44 is made of mild steel and the part of the housing 44 , which is in contact with the anode 38 is electronically isolated from the part of the housing 44 , which is in contact with the cathode 42 , by insulating material 50 . Measures are taken for volume changes of the anode and cathode currency end charge / discharge characterized in that the walls of the housing 44 are designed to be flexible. Instead, inert gas spaces (not shown) may be provided in the compartments 46 , 48 .

In Fig. 2, the separator 40 is shown in the form of a flat plate, as is the case with the matrix of the cathode 42 , the matrix filling the compartment 48 .

In Fig. 3, a battery of the cells 36 of Fig. 2 is shown, which is generally indicated at 28 . The cells 36 are shown in a side-by-side in-line arrangement and the same reference numerals are used for the moving parts in FIG. 3 as in FIG . The housings 18 of the cells 36 in the battery 28 are provided by a common elongated box structure 54 of square cross-section and have end walls and portions thereof, indicated at 56 and 58, respectively. The sections 58 form common walls of an adjacent cell housing 44 , and the end walls 56 form outwardly facing walls of the housings 44 of the cells 36 against opposite sides of the battery 28 .

Die Zelle 36 von Fig. 4 hat ein Weichstahlgehäuse 44 ähnlich der Kastenstruktur 54 von Fig. 3.Referring to Fig. 4, the cell shown is again denoted 36 and, unless otherwise specified, the same reference numerals are again used for the same parts as in Figs . The cell 36 of FIG. 4 has a mild steel housing 44 similar to the box structure 54 of FIG. 3.

Serie besitzen die Hälfte der Dicke der Strukturen 42 zwischen den Anoden 38.In the housing 44 , a plurality (three) of anodes 38 are shown in opposing spaced side by side relationship in series. Between the anodes 38 , alternating with the anodes 36 , a plurality of Kathodenstruk structures 42 created. Two structures 42 are shown between the anodes 38 and a structure 42 is shown at each end of the row, outwardly toward the outermost anode 38 at the sem end. The structures 42 at the ends of the series have half the thickness of the structures 42 between the anodes 38 .

Each cathode structure 42 is in the form of a flat platinum-iron matrix, similar to that of cathode 42 of FIG. 2, and is likewise saturated with molten NaAlCl 4 , also FeCl 2 and NaCl dispersed therein.

Each of the anodes 38 is again in the form of a flattened box-like β "alumina container containing molten, active sodium anode material.

It should be noted that, for ease of illustration, the structures 42 are shown spaced apart from the anodes 38 , but in practice the structures 42 and the anodes 38 are closely spaced and abutting each other in series.

The housing 44 is filled outside the structures 42 and the anodes 38 with molten NaAlCl 4 electrolyte 52 into which the structures 42 are immersed and saturates them.

Each structure 42 has a mild steel lead current collector (not shown) which connects its matrix to the housing 44 , the housing forming the cathode terminal of the cell 36 . Each anode 38 also has a mild steel line current collector (not shown) which passes through a sealed opening in the connected β '' alumina container of that anode. In the container, the current collector is connected to a suitable current collector screen or net that lines the container, and outside the container, it is electronically isolated from the NaAlCl 4 electrolyte and from the housing 44 through which it passes. The anode current collector leads are connected together outside of the housing 44 so that the cell has its cathode structure 44 connected in parallel to form a single cathode and has its anodes 38 connected in parallel to form a composite anode.

In practice, the cathode matrices are intended to be relatively thin, those of FIGS. 2 and 3 are about 3.5 mm thick, as will the structures 42 of FIG. 4, which sit between the anodes 38 . These matrices will therefore be in the form of webs and they are endowed with a porosity and FeCl 2 loading in the charged state such that their capacity can be expressed as 0.3 Ah / g and 0.34 Ah / cm 3 .

The separators 40 of Figs. 2 and 3 and the walls of the containers of the anodes 38 of Fig. 4, wherein the containers also act as solid electrolyte separators in practice, are respectively directed on and opposite the adjacent cathode matrix sheets, such that the capacity of the cathode sheets can be expressed as 0.1 Ah / cm 2 (this can be considered as the total capacity of the cathode matrices divided by the total separator area exposed side-by-side with these cathode matrices).

The applicant has shown in experiments carried out that the cells of the type shown in Fig. 2, as described above, are capable of receiving a charge over a period of 1 hour in the amount of 70% of the cell capacity, and that they An energy: Long-term Leistungsver ratio of 1: 3 may have.

These cells are accordingly suitable for the vehicle drive system 10 described with reference to FIG .
