Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an electrode for electro medical applications, especially an implantable Stimulus electrode, with a metallic electrode function part, the functional surfaces with a porous layer made of highly conductive and biocompatible material are.
In particular implantable electrodes for cardiac pace Doers have to make demands for high body tolerance small size, good electrical Conductivity and a high double layer capacity the electrode / body fluid interface, because with possible during the stimulus impulse with impressed current As little potential changes occur, the energy is low and electrochemical reactions stay. The electrodes should also have a macro Have geometry that is easy to position, Fixing and waxing the electrode functional part possible.
Electrodes of the type mentioned are for example from the US-PS 41 56 429 and US-PS 45 02 492 known. The latter electrode in particular has in its functional part a barbed shape for fixation to the heart muscle kel. The tip has a macroscopic profile and is coated with platinum black.
Furthermore, from US-PS 42 81 669 a heart step maker or stimulus electrode known from you metal substrate and a porous thereon There is a metal layer. The metal layer settles composed of metal particles at their point of contact ten are connected to each other and to the substrate, so that a network of interconnected Pores is formed. Metal substrate and metal layer can NEN for example made of titanium.
It has been shown that the increasing trend towards station wagons nation of different measures within one elec Trodensystems for miniaturization, so that simple Solid state electrodes no longer meet the requirements len. In the latter context, electrodes have been removed activated glassy carbon or metal electrodes with especially proven titanium nitride layers. Especially from EP-PS 0 115 778 is an electrode of the beginning called known type in which the electrode functional part consists of electrically conductive carrier material and in active area a porous layer of a carbide, Nitride or carbonitride of at least one of the metals Titanium, vanadium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tan Tal or tungsten. The porous layer a layer thickness between 1 and 100 microns.
Since the active surface on the electrode functional part is as possible has also been suggested by Sintering of spherical metal powders before loading layering with porous titanium nitride a further increase to reach area. The technique for applying derar tiger metal balls of about 100 microns in diameter is ever expensive. Especially in manufacturing technology there are dimensional, yield and reliability problems on. In addition, for procedural reasons of the subsequent coating no longer the entire upper surface of the sintered beads are coated, but only the surface facing the material source chen.
The object of the invention is therefore an electrode for to create electromedical applications in which the Disadvantages of macroscopic surface enlargement do not occur on the electrode functional part.
Dabei sind die Strukturen Mikrostrukturen im Abstand von ca. 100 µm.The object is achieved in that the Surface of the electrode functional part structures points that in the electrode functional part before loading Layering with the porous material are introduced. The structures are microstructures at a distance of approx. 100 µm.
The electrode constructed according to the invention therefore uses one new path to macroscopic surface enlargement before coating. If the electrode functional part with a pacemaker electrode essentially one forms hemispherical electrode head, the structure ture concentric or spiral on the electrodes be arranged head or meandering on the Elek Tread head back and forth. If the electrode radio tion part with a reference electrode the heart step Macherelektrode forms a ring cylinder, the Structures ring or spiral around the ring cylinder the circulate. The structures form in cross-section Trenches, the depth of which is roughly the width on the base side correspond.
The above structures can be advantageously carried out Generate laser processing. Such a process is quick, can be automated and does not pose any binding problems at borders surfaces like the well-known sintering process, since now the parts still standing between the trenches Remain part of the solid-state electrode. Alternatively, you can the structures on the electrode functional part chemical etching using a masking technique become.
The coating structured according to the above procedure Electrodes provided by an additional porosity increase in the coating on the inclined surfaces higher boundary layer capacitance values than the known ones Electrodes. As materials come as in the state of the Technology for the metallic electrode functional part for example titanium in question, that with titanium nitride as porous Layer is combined. But it is also a combination of titanium nitride based on platinum-iridium alloys metal possible or others from the prior art already proposed combinations of materials.

In Fig. 1, 1 denotes a helical lead of a partially cut pacemaker electrode and 5 a plastic insulation. The only indicated electrode has a metallic functional part 10 , which generally consists of titanium. As is well known, the functional surfaces are coated with a porous, highly conductive and biocompatible material, such as titanium nitride. Such a coating is indicated in FIG. 1 by reference number 15 .
In Fig. 1, the surface of the electrode functional part has 10 microstructures which are introduced into the functional part 10 before coating with the porous material. For example, the structures run as concentric trenches 11 on the functional part 10 , which is designed essentially as a hemisphere-shaped electrode head, as is indicated in FIG. 2. As an alternative to this, they can also be designed as back-and-forth meandering trenches 12 , as shown in FIG. 3. Finally, a spiral arrangement of such trenches 11 and 12 is also possible.
In Fig. 4, two coaxial, helical leads with 1 and 2 and associated insulation with 5 and 6 respectively, the lead 1 to the (not shown) pacemaker electrode according to FIG. 1 and the lead 2 to a reference electrode. The reference electrode has an approximately tubular electrode functional part 20 , on the outer cylinder jacket micro structures are alternatively arranged as annular or spiral trenches 21 . A coating of the functional surfaces is indicated in Fig. 4 with the reference numeral 25 .
In Fig. 5, the base material of an electrode function is partially denoted by B. Trenches are incorporated into this base material, which ideally can be rectangular. In practical cases, the trenches 11 , 12 and 21 of FIGS. 1 to 4 will be approximately wavy. It is essential that the trenches have substantially the same depth t as the width d at the base, which lies between the dimensions d 1 and d 2 shown in FIG . The porous layer S is applied in a known manner to the functional surfaces of the base material 13 provided with trenches.
The manufacture of the structures can be done in a simple manner done by laser machining. This technology net through a fast and automatable through feasibility. It can be integrated in a th production by a single or multiple ar working cycle immediately before coating with the laser reproducible structures at a distance of, for example Generate 100 µm. It could be shown in detail that the depth of that generated by laser machining Ditches increase directly with the number of work cycles. The subsequent coating takes place, for example by known CVD processes. Through the previous one Laser processing advantageously results a "cauliflower" -like surface structure in the Coating, with which the active surface of the layer ver is enlarged. The fine structure of the porous layer is but essentially compared to the known electrodes remained unchanged.
In addition to laser processing, other methods are also available Structuring possible. For example, come here chemical etching with masking areas, which are defined by par tial removal of cover layers were generated in Question.
Titanium for the metallic electrode functional part and titanium nitride for the porous and biocompatible coating are advantageously used as the material for the electrodes described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 5. This combination of materials has proven itself in practice. However, other known metal combinations, in particular platinum-iridium, as electrode base material are also possible for the same purpose.
Experimental investigations have confirmed who that with the electrodes described much higher Boundary layer capacity values are reached than at the stand of the technique.
