Die sogenannten feuerlosen Dampflokomotiven leiden in ihrer Wirkung dadurch, daß nur Naßdampf naturgemäß zur Verwendung kommen kann. Bei Verwendung eines Überhitzers steigert sich einmal der Wirkungsgrad der Lokomotive um ungefähr 20 bis 30 Prozent, andererseits sinkt infolge des höheren Arbeitsvermögens von Heißdampf der Dampf verbrauch in noch höherem Grade; der Wasserspeicher wird um ein Vielfaches leichter. Der Überhitzer kann entweder aus stark wärmespeicherndem Material bestehen, das bei Füllung der Lokomotive gleichzeitig aufgeheizt wird, am besten elektrisch, oder eigens durch Öl- oder Gasfeuerung beheizt werden. Der Brenner bei letzterer Art ist bei Stillstand der Lokomotive so eingestellt, daß die Überhitzerrohre gerade ihre notwendige Temperatur halten; beim Öffnen des Reglers wird durch geeignete Übertragung die Feuerung auf ihre einregelbare Vollleistung automatisch geöffnet. Die Abgase dieser Überhitzerfeuerung durchstreichen den Dampfkessel und geben dabei ihre Wärme bei diesem Gegenstromprinzip derart an den Kessel ab, daß sie mit ungefährlicher Temperatur die Lokomotive verlassen. Der Gewichtszuwachs der Lokomotive durch den Überhitzer wird durch die Gewichtsersparnis an Wasservorrat reichlich ausgeglichen, sogar ziemlich übertroffen; die Bedienung wird nicht verwickelter, so daß einmännige Bedienung beibehalten werden kann.The so-called fireless steam locomotives suffer in their effectiveness because that only wet steam can naturally be used.
