The invention relates to a method for functional testing and calibration of
Carbon monoxide (CO) analyzers using a test gas mixture with a suitable
predetermined concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) by the analyzer
is tested.
Zur Bestimmung des Gehalts an Kohlenmonoxid (CO) in der Umgebungsatmosphäre
sind verschiedene Arten von Analysatoren bekannt (vgl. "Römpps Chemie-Lexikon"
8. Auflage 1983, Band 3, Seite 2152, rechte Spalte).
gemisch gearbeitet. To determine the level of carbon monoxide (CO) in the ambient atmosphere
different types of analyzers are known (cf. "Römpps Chemie-Lexikon"
8th edition 1983, volume 3, page 2152, right column). For the functional test
and calibration of these carbon monoxide (CO) analyzers it is necessary
from time to time feed them a test gas mixture in which the concentration
tion of carbon monoxide (CO) is precisely specified, namely in precisely the con
centering range, which is inte
is interesting. Here, with CO concentrations up to approx. 500 ppm in the test gas
worked mixed.
The required test gas mixture with the corresponding carbon monoxide (CO) con
So far, concentration has only been available in test gas cylinders. Basically it is
also possible with concentrated, gaseous carbon monoxide (CO) in one gas
to work bottle and this in a mixing section with a zero gas flow,
for example with synthetic air, also from a gas bottle
comes to mix to the appropriate concentration.
The above explanations make it clear that this has been practiced so far
This procedure requires the use of CO gas cylinders. This is a
fairly expensive affair, the consumption of carbon monoxide (CO) is high,
but also the necessary storage of appropriate CO gas bottles and
their transportation is complex.
Consequently, the invention has the object
reasons, a method for functional testing and calibration of carbon monoxide
Specify (CO) analyzers, based on the costly, handling
and storage-technically difficult use of CO gas bottles
can be.
The method according to the invention, in which the above-mentioned object is achieved
is characterized in that immediately before the functional test and
Calibration of the analyzer carbon monoxide (CO) or a carbon monoxide (CO)
containing gas is generated that an inert gas, in particular molecular
Nitrogen, or a gas mixture with molecular nitrogen and oxygen,
especially synthetic air, passed through a mixing section and so
just generated carbon monoxide (CO) or the gas containing carbon monoxide (CO)
is metered into the gas mixture in a precisely defined amount in the mixing section
and that the gas mixture emerging from the mixing section into the analyzer as
Test gas mixture is introduced. According to the invention, this becomes a functional test
and calibration required carbon monoxide (CO) only and only immediately before
the function test and calibration of the analyzer and in the
Analyzer fed test gas stream initiated. This has the great advantage
that only then and exactly as much carbon monoxide is generated as it is currently
is required for the functional test and calibration of an analyzer.
The required equipment can be easily assembled in a compact,
realize portable test gas generator.
Da
There are now various options for concretizing the method according to the invention. Of particular advantage is an embodiment of the method according to the invention, which is characterized in that the carbon monoxide (CO) is generated by photolysis of CO compounds, preferably by photolysis of formaldehyde (CH 2 O), in particular of paraformaldehyde ( HO (CH 2 O) n H). This technology based on the use of light energy for the production of carbon monoxide in the desired concentrations has the advantage that it can be integrated in a particularly expedient manner in a compact test gas generator and that the targeted yield of carbon monoxide can be controlled in a particularly precise manner. It should be taken into account that the process according to the invention does not depend on a particularly high percentage yield of carbon monoxide (CO), but that the only important thing is to be able to maintain a possibly very low yield with high accuracy. For example, in the production of carbon monoxide (CO) by photolysis of paraformaldehyde (HO (CH 2 O) n H), it is advisable to work at a constant temperature, in particular a temperature between 30 ° and 55 ° C. A defined vapor pressure forms over the finely crystalline solid of paraformaldehyde. The gas located above the solid is decomposed to the required extent by photo lysis. The degree of decomposition can be influenced by the choice of frequency and radiation density. However, the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) in the gas space above the solid can be controlled in a particularly fine manner by the temperature. For a measurement range relevant to the immission measurement of 0 to 10 ppm (another measurement range for the immission measurement is the measuring range 0 to 50 ppm), calibration concentrations in the upper third of the measurement range should be able to be generated particularly consistently by using an appropriate temperature element, for example of a Peltier element, the temperature is stabilized to a value of approx. 35 ° C. For significantly higher concentrations of the emission measurement, correspondingly higher temperatures are required, although these are concentration ranges anyway, for the analyzers of the type in question are less significant.
rator weniger gut geeignet. In principle, it would also be possible to carry out the process according to the invention in such a way that the carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by dropping concentrated formic acid (HCOOH) into hot sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) at about 100 ° C. This process technology, which has long been known for laboratory purposes, is less suitable for automated use in a test gas generator.
Taking into account the origins known from industrial applications
References of carbon monoxide (CO) are there for use in a fiction
The method also includes the possibility that the carbon monoxide (CO) is incomplete
constant combustion of fuels containing CO compounds, in particular
activated carbon. In this case, too, the exact determina
temperature is of considerable importance. For example, the un
complete combustion of activated carbon at a temperature between approx.
150 ° C and approx. 300 ° C. In this temperature range, with the tempe
As the temperature rises, carbon monoxide (CO) is emitted by the activated carbon without
that it actually starts to burn. After a certain stabilization
time at constant temperature, the emission rate is pretty constant.
However, it is slightly sloping over long periods, which is on surfaces
changes, in particular a reduction in the effective emission surface
the activated carbon is due to prolonged temperature influence. Hence is
this because of the solid properties of the activated carbon for use in one
Test gas generator particularly suitable method less useful if
it depends on the long-term stability of the emission rate.
Finally, there is the possibility that the carbon monoxide (CO) is generated by catalytic decomposition of CO compounds, in particular formic acid (HCOOH) or formates (HCOOM I or HCOOR). A platinum network or the like can be used as a catalyst, for example, with temperatures of around 300 ° C. From formic acid, for example, CO evaporates at this temperature in a concentration that can be determined to a fairly precise degree. However, the liquid formic acid and the formates are relatively difficult to handle in a portable, compact test gas generator.
