Abstract

The transparent tube made of aluminium oxide has a bush retained inside each end, through which an end connection fitting is inserted. The fitting, which carries an electrode projecting inside is retained by a glass ring which is melted to form a gas tight seal. The melting operation is also used to secure a niobium sleeve previously fitted to the tube, forming a heat shield. For accurately positioning the sleeve, it carries tabs bent over inwards to rest against the end of the tube. Alternative designs include a conical sleeve for a conical end part of the tube.
