Abstract

In a multicylinder internal combustion engine, such as a motor vehicle engine, for example, the speed of the engine is sampled in order to detect in the region of the power stroke of each cylinder a maximum and a minimum speed, in accordance with which a difference is calculated between the maximum and minimum speed data as a speed fluctuation. In this way, a fluctuation in the engine speed is obtained for each cylinder and the fluctuation data are intercompared in order to detect a cylinder which is operating defectively and producing less torque. If a defective cylinder is detected, an alarm device is activated in order to alert the driver that engine failure (breakdown) is at hand. In addition, the fuel supply to a defectively operating cylinder is interrupted, in order to prevent undesirable escape of unburned fuel. <IMAGE>
