Crystalline catalysts (I) of compsn. w.r.t. oxide molar ratios of 1.0 +/- 0.3 M2O:Fe2O3:30 to 300 SiO2:zH2O where M is monovalent cation and z is 0-20 are obtd. by reacting a tetraalkylammonium cpd. (II) of formula (R1)x(R2)yN(+)X where R1 and R2 are 2-4C alkyl, x and y are 1-3, x plus y is 4 and X is Be(-) or OH(-) with aq. soln. contg. an iron salt (III), siliceous material (IV), alkali metal salt (V) and H2SO4 to form a gel; after heating the gel in autoclave, filtering, drying and calcining, catalyst prod. (I) is obtd. where M is esp. Na, hydrogen ammonium or their mixt. (I) are used to convert 1-4C alkanols or a mixt. thereof and H2O to light olefins by a single step process. Cpd. (II) is pref. triethyl nPr ammonium bromide. Pref. the gel is heated at 100-180 deg.C for 1-15 days. Iron salts (III) may be sulphates, nitrates, etc.. Siliceous materials (IV) can be SiO2 gels, silicic acid etc. and salts.
