Abstract

In various fields, such as, for example, medical image evaluation, data processing, and simulation and monitoring of activities in three-dimensional space, it is necessary to make spatial three-dimensional images, graphics or other data accessible in an adequate form to one or more viewers. The selectivity in terms of direction or wavelength of the diffraction at certain grating structures is used in order in conjunction with illumination from various directions or using various wavelengths to superimpose special image parts (preferably split images) at various depths in such a way that a three-dimensional impression of the image is produced. This results in the design of a screen of high light efficiency which can be rewritten as often as desired, responds in real time, manages without any mechanically moving parts, and offers all the physiological possibilities for depth perception. Data present in the form of split images can be output directly on the screen without preprocessing.
