Description
Method and device for the production of fermentable sugar Wood under pressure by means of acid. The invention relates to the production of fermentable Sugar is made from wood by means of acid under pressure and consists, apart from one special Type of construction of the apparatus for treating the wood, as far as the process itself comes into question, in the fact that the damping of the wood before the acid treatment takes place at a temperature which is below the acetic acid formation temperature, and that after steaming has taken place, the acid is supplied in the form of a solution, whose temperature is considerably below the temperature of the damped mass, so that a strong vapor condensation occurs. In already known methods for However, fermentable sugar from wood and the like is also produced the steaming of the wood material below the acetic acid formation temperature, which at a process for the production of fermentable sugar that is special for the sake of it This is important because the vinegar produced in the course of the procedure inhibits the formation of fermentable sugar would have an effect. The new procedure makes a difference However, they differ from the known processes serving the same purpose through the Introduction of the acid for inverting in the form of a relatively cold one Solution. The low temperature of the acid solution causes at least some of it Condensation of the steam and thus creates a more or less deep vacuum, whereby the air sitting in the wood pores is caused to escape, so that the acid solution favorable conditions for entry into the interior of the wood mass finds. Such favorable conditions would not exist if without creation a partial vacuum through condensation directly to the steaming process itself a pressure treatment of the mass with acid followed, as is the case with known processes happens in which the damping and acid treatment also according to the present method -done in your same cooker.
The implementation of the new method requires a digester, which is provided with three pipes, one of which is for the supply of water vapor, a second to dissipate the turpentine and similar vapors during the steaming process and the third serves to supply the acid solution. To be effective To achieve treatment, the cooker is designed to be rotatable in a manner known per se and the steam supply pipe arranged so that it lies in the material space during the pipes for the discharge of the turpentine and similar vapors and for the supply of the acid solution open in the vapor space, as it is for the supply of acid, for example in inversion of strength, is known.
An apparatus suitable for practicing the invention is illustrated on the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Fig. I means a vertical section through the preferred embodiment of the device, namely along line I-I of Fig. 2 with the steam and steam lines illustrated in elevation.

In the drawing i means the body of the container made of sheet metal, -which is covered on the inside with acid-resistant brick material 2, which is in a suitable, binding agent resistant to the hydrolyzing agent is used. if Sulphurous or sulphurous acid for inversion - is used, can be used as a binding agent a mixture of black lead and glycerine can be used.
The vessel is equipped with a manhole 3 for the introduction and removal of the Good and provided with a blow-off valve 4, which in the one position of the vessel can be coupled with the blow-off pipe 5. The vessel rests on hollow pegs 6, 7 and can be rotated by a worm gear 8 (Fig. 2). Through the hollow pin 6 protrudes into the digester during the digester rotation fixed pipe 9, which is broken through at io and serves to supply water vapor. It is with . a shut-off valve i i provided and with a water vapor source through a Pipe 12 (Fig. 3) connected, which can be shut off by a valve 13.
In practice a plurality of such cookers is usually used, namely one stove blows off into another stove. For this purpose there is a line 14 (Fig.3) is provided, which is connected to each cooker of the 'series by a pipe 15 is. This is through the pipe 16 at a point between the valve i l and the valve 13 with the steam inlet pipe 9 in connection. A valve 17 is located between the tubes 1 5 and 16. The tube 15 is also through a with a valve i9 provided tube 18 with the Abdämpfrohr 20 in connection. The latter occurs the hollow pin 7 in the cooker and lies behind the steam inlet pipe 9, with which e5 is united by a T-piece 21. . The connection between the tubes 9 and 2o is interrupted by a full flange 22 (Fig. I).
With the latter it stands by that '"-Piece 2i In connection, but is from the pipe 9 through one in the T-piece 25 provided full flange 24 completed. The tube 23 bulges in the vapor space of the cooker to the top and is perforated in the same at 26. As shown in Fig. I and is illustrated in Figure 2 with dotted lines, the pipe -23 extends from the axis of the cooker at an angle. from about d.5 ° to the vertical up. It follows that when the cooker is in the position indicated by an arrow in Fig. 2 indicated direction is rotated, the tube 23 is substantially at right angles to the inclined surface of the load. So it doesn't just protrude that far as possible in the steam room of the cooker, but is also subject to the slightest Stress caused by the weight and pressure of the load.
The pipe 2o stands outside the cooker with a steam pipe 27 in Compound which leads to a suitable condenser 28 for volatile products leads. In the tube 27 sits a. Valve 29, and around this there is a steam bypass 30, which is provided with a pressure regulating valve 32 (Figure 2).
The hydrolyzing agent gets into the digester through a valve provided pipe 33 is introduced, which lies in the steam discharge pipes 2o and 23 and ends in an atomizer nozzle 3.4, which is located in the steam chamber of the cooker and facing towards the loading surface. The procedure is as follows, whereby i is based on the treatment of resin-rich woods: The stove is so far filled with moist sawdust or waste wood that the steam inlet pipe 9 is covered, while the perforated part of the curved discharge pipe 23 is exposed. The cooker is then closed, rotated and steamed under appropriate conditions Pressure through the axial - perforated pipe 9 in the interior of the feeder passed until the wood on a turpentine or distillation similar volatile products suitable, but brought so low that a substantial decomposition of the cellulose cannot occur, which is known to occur at considerable amounts of acetic acid and of tar and phenolic bodies at high temperatures results. A temperature below that of steam is usually sufficient for this purpose a pressure of 43 to 2 atmospheres, if necessary lower Prints are applied. When the valve 29 is opened, the turpentine flows and the water vapor through the perforations 26 into the pipe system 23, 2o, 27 the condenser 28, where the turpentine and other volatile accompanying it Products can be recovered. This distillation continues until the separation of turpentine is essentially complete: the supply of steam is then turned off, the drain valve 29 is closed and the hydrolyzing-de Agent by nebulizer. nozzle 34 leads into the cooker.
The acid solution is introduced into the digester according to the invention at a temperature which is considerably below the temperature of the wood, which by the prescribed treatment to a temperature above the evaporation temperature the temperature of the water has been brought. The immediate effect of the Introduction of the cold hydrolyzing agent is that a partial or complete condensation of the wood moisture converted into steam takes place _ and - a partial vacuum is created in the cooker so that. the hydrolyzing one Agent penetrates deeper, more intimately and faster into the mass of the particles to be converted. _ In addition, these circumstances ensure an extremely complete mixing of the hydrolyzing Agent with the mass to be converted, as the hydrolyzing agent acts on the from above Surface of the sawdust is emptied, which with the continued rotation of the Kochers slides past the atomizer nozzle 34 in a steady stream. It has has shown that such a process provides an extremely effective and intimate distribution of the hydrolyzing agent is secured by the sawdust, and that this intimate Distribution results in a significant increase in the percentage of fermentable sugar, which are split off by the subsequent treatment.
The amount of acid solution should be such that it increases the acid concentration, based on the total moisture content of the goods, to 0.2 to 0.5. percent brings. When the acid solution is at a significantly below the temperature of the wood is introduced at a lying temperature, a considerably larger percentage of liquid can be used the charge can be abandoned without this as a result of the deeper penetration is saturated to the limit of its absorption capacity. It is important here that the total liquid content of the feed after the introduction of the - hydrolyzing Agent is smaller than necessary for complete saturation so that the Mass during the subsequent steaming for the production of fermentable sugar permeable and receptive state.
When the acid solution is under a low hydrostatic head is to be introduced, the internal vapor pressure must first be relieved, or but the vapor pressure is maintained and the hydrolyzing. Agent either introduced as a gas or as a liquid into the digester under suitable pressure. In In both cases the condensation of the vapor results in a rapid drop in the internal pressure. Preferably, though not necessarily, things are regulated in such a way that that the pressure in the digester falls below atmospheric pressure.
After some or the whole amount of the hydrolyzing agent has been introduced into the digester and thoroughly mixed with the charge, steam is again admitted through the bore 9 and the temperature is kept at a suitable level for a corresponding period of time. When processing conifer wood sawdust, a temperature of 135 to 165 ° C (275 to 325 ° F) is usually maintained for 0 to 4.5 minutes. The steam is then released and the fermentable sugar solution leached from the cooked material. The process proceeds in such a way that the pretreated material is relatively hard, granular and not absorbent, so that leaching can take place quickly in diffusion apparatus of the customary type. The resulting solution can then be fermented and distilled by known methods to obtain alcohol.
When a plurality of cookers are operated, the steam is left on either at the end of cooking or after distillation in another fresh Blow off the charged stove. This is done by opening valve i9, whereby the Steam and the volatiles 'entrained' by it through pipes 18 and 15 and pass through line 14 and thence through inlet pipe 16 into flow through the other cooker (Fig. 3). Desired fadls can get some of the fumes through the blow-off cock q. and the tube 5 are released into the air. to get time. save or in order to reduce the gradual accumulation of young to avoid such volatile substances, which either during cooking or during obstruct the subsequent fermentation.
