Abstract

The invention relates to polyurethane compositions for hollow fibre dialysers, which compositions comprise polyisocyanates and homogeneous, storage-stable polyol mixtures based on castor oil as the principal constituent, a proportion, which can be varied within broad limits and essentially determines the mechanical properties, such as hardness and elasticity, of the cured polyurethane, of low-molecular-weight, polyfunctional, hydroxyl-containing compounds which are usually virtually incompatible or only slightly compatible with castor oil at room temperature, and a solubiliser in the form of partial esters of the low-molecular-weight, polyfunctional hydroxyl compounds with carboxylic acids having a carbon chain length of greater than 14, and optionally a small amount of activated zeolite. The curing of the polyurethane compositions, which are in principle suitable as materials in medical technology, but in particular as embedding materials for cellulose hollow fibres in dialysers, is advantageously carried out, without impairing the dialysis properties and geometry of the hollow fibres, in the presence of tin/sulphur compounds as catalyst at temperatures between 20 and 80 DEG C, preferably up to 65 DEG C. The cured polyurethane compositions have a physiological acceptability which means the medical purity requirements laid down in pharmacopoeias. The hollow fibre dialysers produced using the polyurethane compositions according to the invention are suitable for haemodialysis.
