Description

The invention relates to a ring interferometer according to the Preamble of claim 1.

B. in der Druckschrift: "Reviews of Modern Physics" 39, No. 2 (1967), Seiten 475- 493, "Sagnac-effect" von E.J. Post.Ring interferometer and its application for absolute determination spatial rotations using the Sagnac Effects are known - see z. B. in the publication: "Reviews of Modern Physics" 39, no. 2 (1967), pages 475- 493, "Sagnac-effect" by E.J. Post.

A ring interferometer according to the preamble of claim 1 is known from DE 29 36 267, which was not previously published A 1. With the arrangement described there, the measurement the rotation uses a light path that consists of a single mode There is optical fiber, which is wound into a spool and therefore a multiple round trip of the light around an area enables. The measurement of the rotation can be disturbed by reflections and / or scattering of the light in particular at the ends of the light path. Such disturbances will be avoided by using polarizing filters as well of light whose coherence length is essential is smaller than the length of the light path. the end from DE 28 04 103 A1 and from the publication Applied Optics, Vol. 18, No. July 13, 1979, pages 2069-2097 comparable arrangements are known in which also Polarizing filter used to avoid interference will.

Such arrangements have the disadvantage that in particular attenuation by inserting polarization filters of light occurs through a correspondingly strong Light source must be compensated again. In addition, the polarization filters are created additional optically effective surfaces, the additional cause disturbing reflections and / or light scattering can. These disturbances can be caused by additional anti-reflective coatings of the surfaces can be avoided. One such However, the process is expensive.

The invention is based on the object of a ring interferometer type described, with the simple Average the disturbing influences of reflection and polarization rotations be suppressed.

Die Erfindung ist im Anspruch 1 beschrieben. Die Unteransprüche beinhalten vorteilhafte Weiterbildungen und Ausführungsformen der Erfindung. The invention is described in claim 1. The subclaims contain advantageous developments and Embodiments of the invention.

Die Erfindung wird im folgenden näher erläutert. The invention is explained in more detail below.

Fig. 1 shows, in principle, the known arrangement of a ring interferometer comprising a light source Q, an strahlenaufteilenden arrangement T, a light source Q with the strahlenaufteilenden arrangement T connecting optical path a, a light path L, which switches a surface F or polysubstituted encloses and which opens into the beam splitting arrangement T at both ends, as well as a photodetector D and a light path b , which connects the beam splitting arrangement T with the photodetector D , the light emitted by Q being coupled into both ends of L via a and T , L runs through in both directions and then reunited via T and is thereby brought to interference and then passed on via b to D and detected there. The beam splitting arrangement can be both a simple beam splitter and an arrangement consisting of two beam splitters. T can also be an arrangement with single sideband modulators, as proposed in DE-OS 29 34 794.

Ist τ c die Kohärenzzeit der Lichtquelle Q und τ L die Laufzeit des Lichtes durch den Lichtweg L, so ist die BedingungThe disturbances caused by reflections occur in that the light reflected in L and T components of the light in T also interfere and cause measurement errors in D. To reduce the interference caused by reflection, a light source Q with a low temporal coherence of the emitted light is used. If τ c is the coherence time of the light source Q and τ L is the transit time of the light through the light path L , then the condition is

τ C « t L (1) τ C « t L (1)

As a result, only reflected and scattered light components whose transit time difference between Q and D is less than t c are capable of interference. If the scattering centers are approximately evenly distributed over L , the portion of the scattered light that comes from one end of L is only capable of interference with a fraction of the size τ c / τ L of the scattered light coming from the other fiber end. The scattered light component capable of interference and the measurement error caused by it is therefore reduced by τ c / τ L. Likewise, the light reflected in T and passed on directly from a to b is not capable of interference with the light passed via L and therefore cannot cause an interfering signal.

This leads to the fact that in the single-mode optical waveguide the two natural waves with mutually orthogonal polarization have different propagation speeds. The difference in transit time of the two natural waves is denoted by Δ τ L in the following. Accordingly, the light that propagates in the first eigenwave 1 of L has a transit time τ L 1 through L and the light that propagates in the eigenwave 2 has a transit time through L

t L 2 = τ L 1 + Δ τ L (2) t L 2 = τ L 1 + Δ τ L (2)

wobei Δ τ L klein gegen τ L 1, τ L 2 ist (typischerweise ist Δ τ L /t L ≈ 10-6 . . . 10-3).where Δ τ L is small compared to τ L 1 , τ L 2 (typically Δ τ L / t L ≈ 10 -6... 10 -3 ).

A single mode optical fiber with this property is said to be birefringent. In general, since the light path L are both self-waves are excited in two directions in T is an interference of sub-beams L pass through in one direction, in Self-shaft 1, with partial beams L pass through in the opposite direction of rotation on their own shaft 2, is possible. Such interference leads to incorrect measurements.

Zur Vermeidung derartig bedingter Fehlmessungen wird erfindungsgemäß eine Lichtquelle mit einer KohärenzzeitTo avoid Erroneous measurements caused in this way are in accordance with the invention a light source with a coherence time

τ c « Δ τ L (3) τ c « Δ τ L (3)

verwendet. As a result, interference is only possible between light rays that propagate in the same natural wave in both directions. Incorrect measurements due to interference from light rays that have propagated in different natural waves are therefore excluded. Because of Δ τ L « τ L 1 or τ L 2 , inequality (3) also satisfies inequality (2). The inclusion of polarization filters in the beam path to suppress a natural wave can be dispensed with, although this measure can also lead to higher accuracy.

In Fig. 1, two polarizers POL 1 and POL 2 are indicated by dashed lines. The depolarization caused by the small τ c is also useful in this case, since disturbances due to fluctuations in the polarization rotation in L are considerably reduced.

B. in der Druckschrift: "Optics Letters" 1, No. 3 (1977), Seiten 109-111, "Representation of codirectional coupled waves" von R. Ulrich beschrieben. The condition formulated by inequality (3) has the consequence that the light is completely depolarized after passing through the light path L. This means that there is no correlation between the light carried in both natural waves of L and no interference is possible between the light beams carried in different natural waves. The mechanism of the depolarization of the light during the passage through L is illustrated in a simple manner with the aid of the Poincar 'sphere shown in FIG. The representation of polarization states with the help of the Poincar´ sphere is z. B. in the document: "Optics Letters" 1, No. 3 (1977), pages 109-111, "Representation of codirectional coupled waves" by R. Ulrich.

G₁: horizontal polarisierte Welle,
G₂: vertikal polarisierte Welle,
H₁, H₂: ±45° polarisierte Wellen,
F₁, F₂: entgegengesetzt zirkular polarisierte Wellen.
In Fig. 2, the following polarization states are highlighted as points on the spherical surface:
G ₁: horizontally polarized wave,
G ₂: vertically polarized wave,
H ₁, H ₂: ± 45 ° polarized waves,
F ₁, F ₂: oppositely circularly polarized waves.

Is the single mode optical fiber used as the light path L z. B. linearly birefringent with the two horizontally and vertically polarized eigenwaves, then during the propagation of the light through L a rotation of the polarization state shown on the surface of the Poincar 'sphere takes place around the x -axis of the Poincar' sphere.

Ist die Laufzeitdifferenz der beiden Eigenwellen Δ τ L , so giltA state P of the Poincar 'sphere is rotated in Fig. 2 by an angle ϕ around the x -axis into a state P' of the Poincar 'sphere. If the transit time difference between the two eigenwaves is Δ τ L , then the following applies

ϕ = 2 π f o Δ τ L (4) ϕ = 2 π f o Δ τ L (4)

Hat die Lichtquelle Q eine endliche Kohärenzzeit τ c , so entspricht dem die endliche spektrale Breitewhere f o is the mean frequency of the light emitted by the light source Q. If the light source Q has a finite coherence time τ c , this corresponds to the finite spectral width

Da der Drehwinkel ϕ von der Lichtfrequenz abhängt, variiert die Polarisationsdrehung in einem Winkelbereich Δ ϕ, gegeben durchwhere equation (5) applies except for a definition-dependent factor of the order of magnitude 1. Since the angle of rotation ϕ depends on the light frequency, the polarization rotation varies in an angular range Δ ϕ , given by

Setzt man Gleichung (5) in Gleichung (6) ein, so gilt mit der Ungleichung (3)Inserting equation (5) into equation (6), the following applies with the inequality (3)

| Δ ϕ | » 2 π (7)| Δ ϕ | »2 π (7)

That is, for τ c « Δ τ L , the rotation of the polarization state varies within the spectral range Δ f o by an amount greater than 2 π . If the polarization state of the light coupled into L lies on the great circle lying in the yz -plane of the Poincar´ sphere, the light is completely depolarized. In general: If the polarization state in the Poincar´ sphere is rotated around any axis, the variation of the angle of rotation within the spectral range of the light is large compared to 2 π and the original polarization state lies on a great circle of the Poincar´ sphere, which is normal in the plane is to the axis of rotation, then complete depolarization occurs.

In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the completely or partially polarized light coming from Q is coupled into L in such a way that the polarization state of the light coupled into L is on a great circle of the Poincar 'sphere, which is in a surface normal to the axis of rotation which is formed by the connecting line between the two eigenstates of L (ie the polarization states of the eigenwaves of L) .

In a special embodiment, a linearly birefringent single-mode optical fiber with the two horizontally and vertically polarized natural waves is used as the light path L and the light coupled into L is circularly polarized or linearly polarized at + 45 ° or -45 ° or with less than ± 45 ° inclined main axis elliptically polarized.

B. in der Druckschrift: "Electronics Letters" 15, No. 13 (1979), Seiten 380-382 "Preservation of polarisation in optical-fibre waveguides with elliptical cores" von R. B. Dyott, J. R. Cozens und D. G. Morris beschrieben. To implement a linear birefringent fiber, a single-mode optical fiber with an elliptical core is advantageously used. Such optical fibers are known from the literature and z. B. in the document: "Electronics Letters" 15, no. 13 (1979), pages 380-382 "Preservation of polarization in optical-fiber waveguides with elliptical cores" by RB Dyott, JR Cozens and DG Morris. The single-mode optical fiber described in this work has a transit time difference of Δ τ L = 5 · 10 -4 τ L 1 . If L has a length of about 200 m, then τ L 1 = 10 -6 s and Δ τ L = 5 × 10 -10 s. It follows from this that the spectral width Δ f o of the light source Q in this example is large compared to 2 GHz must be.

Phys. Lett." 33, No. 8 (1978), Seiten 699-701 "Linear polarisation in birefringent singlemode fibers" von R. H. Stolen. V. Ramaswamy, P. Kaiser und W. Pleibel und aus DE-OS 29 30 781, DE-OS 29 30 791 und DE-OS 29 30 704.To realize linear birefringent fibers are still other proposals known, z. B. from the publication: "Appl. Phys. Lett." 33, no. 8 (1978), pp 699-701 "Linear polarization in birefringent singlemode fibers "by R. H. Stolen. V. Ramaswamy, P. Kaiser and W. Pleibel and from DE-OS 29 30 781, DE-OS 29 30 791 and DE-OS 29 30 704.

In a further embodiment it is proposed to couple light path L as a circularly birefringent single-mode optical fiber and to use linearly polarized light in the light path L.

The realization of a circular birefringent single mode Optical fiber takes place z. B. in a known manner Twisting a single mode optical fiber.

Fig. 3. In a further development of the invention it is proposed to design the light path L in such a way that it consists of two or more double refracting sections, each of these sections rotating the polarization around a different axis of the Poincar 'sphere. In the individual sections of the light path L the polarization state is rotated around different axes of the Poincar´ sphere. See Fig. For a certain frequency of light, the polarization state P after passing through L 'is rotated, the angular coordinates 2 Φ and 2 ψ 2 Φ' in the state of P and 2 ψ converted '. 3. Where, in a finite spectral width both ψ ′ and Φ ′ are frequency dependent. The birefringence of the individual fiber sections has the consequence that at a certain Δ f o, regardless of the polarization state of the light coupled into L , the light at the output of L is completely depolarized.

Eine notwendige Bedingung dafür ist A necessary condition for this is

Die Bedingung der Überdeckung der Poincar´-Kugel symmetrisch zum Ursprung läßt sich mathematisch durch P ′ should describe a curve as a function of f o with variation of f o on the Poincar 'sphere, which covers the Poincar' sphere as symmetrically as possible to the origin of the coordinates. In addition to condition (8a), (8b) it is therefore required that P ′ does not describe a closed curve on the Poincar´ sphere. This is e.g. B. to achieve that the sizes of and are chosen to be very different. The condition of the overlap of the Poincar´ sphere symmetrically to the origin can be mathematically passed through

I (f o ) is the power spectral density of Q and (f o ) is the vector directed from the origin of the coordinates to the point P ′ (f o ) of the Poincar´ sphere. The requirement of zero-point symmetrical overlap is weaker than that of uniform overlap.

Fig. 4 is a schematic representation showing an arrangement of a ring interferometer with different portions of L. The light path L consists of two sections L ₁ and L ₂, one of the two sections consisting of a linearly birefringent single-mode optical fiber and the other of the two sections consisting of a circularly birefringent fiber.

The different values of and are achieved by different lengths of L ₁ and L ₂. For practical implementation z. B. assumed a linear birefringent single-mode optical fiber and this twisted in one of the two sections, so that the optical fiber is circular birefringent in this section.

Da L₂ wesentlich länger als L₁ vorausgesetzt ist, giltTo explain the arrangement according to FIG. 4, we assume that the section L ₁ is significantly shorter than L ₂, that L ₁ is circularly birefringent and L ₂ is linearly birefringent. In the section L ₁ there is a rotation of the polarization state around the z -axis of the Poincar 'sphere, where Φ ' depends on f o. In the section L ₂ there is a rotation about an axis in the xy plane of the Poincar 'sphere, where c ' depends on f o. Since L ₂ is assumed to be much longer than L ₁, applies

The polarization state P of the light coupled into L ₁ at the end 1 of L is converted into the state P ' at the end 2 of L as a function of f o ( FIG. 4). Fig. 5 shows the curve that describes P ' as a function of f o on the Poincar' sphere. By rotating around z in L ₁, P is first performed in states on the curve C ₁ over. Each state lying on C ₁ is then rotated about the axis of rotation ξ of L ₂. Because of the inequality ( 10 ), one cycle around z in L ₁ corresponds to many cycles around ξ in L ₂, so that the curve C ₂ results.

Fig. 6 zeigt eine weitere Anordnung mit verschiedenen Abschnitten von L. Fig. 6 shows another arrangement of various portions of L.

Der Lichtweg L besteht aus einer Anzahl N von Abschnitten L₁ . . . The light path L consists of a number N of sections L ₁. . . L N , whereby each of the sections is birefringent and rotations about different axes of the Poincar´ sphere take place in the individual sections. It is advantageous if in two successive sections L K , L K + 1 with K = 1. . . N -1 a rotation about mutually orthogonal axes takes place. The realization of the light path L takes place z. B. by a linear birefringent fiber, which is rotated at certain intervals by 45 ° (twisted parallel to the axis). The individual sections rotate around polarization axes in the xy -plane of the Poincar´-sphere, whereby the axis-parallel rotation of the fiber by 45 ° at the border of two sections around the polarization axis in the Poincar´-sphere in the xy -plane of the Poincar´-sphere Rotated 90 °. As a further embodiment of the arrangement according to FIG. 6, it is proposed to design light paths L in successive sections to be alternating linear and circular birefringent. This results in a rotation around a polarization axis in the xy plane of the Poincar 'sphere in the linear birefringent sections and a rotation around the z axis of the Poincar' sphere in the circular birefringent sections. The circular birefringent sections are z. B. realized in a known manner by twisting the single-mode optical fiber, so that L consists of a single single-mode optical fiber which is twisted in every other section.

In an advantageous further development of the invention it is proposed to design the light path L so that L is birefringent over its entire length, but the polarization axis of rotation of the Poincar 'sphere varies continuously over the entire length of L , the variation of the polarization axis of rotation having a regular or random function the fiber length can be. The production of such a light path L takes place, for. B. by systematic or random twisting and / or twisting of a single-mode optical waveguide over its entire length.

Because of the required short coherence time τ c , semiconductor injection lasers or temporally incoherent light sources are advantageously to be used as the light source Q. If semiconductor lasers are used as the source Q , the necessary incoherence must advantageously be met for each individual laser oscillation, and this can also be achieved with the aid of a modulation. In the case of temporally incoherent light sources, a satisfactory coupling efficiency in the light path L can only be achieved with a small light-emitting area. The use of so-called super-luminescent edge-emitter light-emitting diodes is advantageous here. Such a light emitting diode is z. B. in the publication: "NTG-Fachberichte" Volume 59 (1977), pages 148-150, "Superluminescent Diode as Light Source in Optical Fiber Systems" by M.-C. Amann and W. Harth. The line width of 10 nm at an emission wavelength of 800 nm corresponds to the values f o = 3.75 × 10¹⁴ Hz Δ f o = 4.7 × 10¹² Hz and t c = 2 × 10 -13 s, so that the inequalities (1 ), (3), (7), (8a), (8b), (10) can be met in all cases without difficulty without the need to use a highly birefringent single-mode optical fiber. Because of the small τ c , ring interferometer arrangements are particularly suitable in which the zero-order interference maximum is adjusted particularly well in connection with the method described here. Ring interferometers with adjustment to zero order interference maximum are z. B. in DE-OS 29 06 870 proposed.
