Abstract

Appts. for storing irradiated fuel elements from a high temp. reactor comprises a storage chamber in which closed metal containers, filled with spent fuel elements, are placed in storage racks. The walls of the storage chamber are swept externally by a natural convection air stream, entering and leaving through feed and discharge ducts. The chamber walls are pref. of concrete. The storage frame for the vessels is pref. composed of tubes, resting on a foundation slab contg. ventilation ducts. Used partic. for storing irradiated fuel elements of thorium uranium from a thorium high temp. reactor, the elements being of the coated particle type contained in graphite spheres. Air cooling provides sufficient heat removal for the elements after a comparatively short decay time, e.g. of one year. The need for water cooled pools is thereby eliminated and the handling of the elements correspondingly simplified.
