The invention relates to a process for the preparation of ethylidene diacetate (1,1-diacetoxyethane) by reaction of dimethyl ether and / or melhylacetate with carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst.

Interseiene, New York fl97O'|). Mit Hilfe eines anderen gut bekanntenEthylidene diacetate is a chemical intermediate of considerable commercial importance as it is without can be further converted into a number of different chemicals that come in tons Market come. Ethylidene diacetate can easily be converted into ethylidene diacetate using a conventional conversion process convert into vinyl acetate plus acetic acid (compare Kirk-Othnier "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology," [Second Edition], Volume 21, Page 321. Interseiene, New York fl97O '|). With the help of another well-known one

b) Verfahrens kann man Äthylidendiacetat in Essigsäureanhydrid plus Acetaldehyd umwandeln (vergleiche Kirk-Othmer »Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology,« [zweite Auflage], Band 8, Seiten 410 bis 413, Interscience, New York [1%5]). The process can be used to convert ethylidene diacetate into acetic anhydride plus acetaldehyde (compare Kirk-Othmer "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology," [Second Edition], Volume 8, pages 410-413, Interscience, New York [1% 5]). It is also referred to the US-PS 24 25 389, from which the diverse applicability of Ethylene diacetate emerges as a chemical intermediate.

Eine weitere Methode umfaßt die Reduktion von Essigsäureanhydrid mil Wasserstoff, vergleiche die US-PS 35 79 566.So far, however, the utilization of ethylidene diacetate as a chemical intermediate has been considerable Manner restricted by the fact that there is no economical process for its production from easily accessible, sees cheap raw materials available. One method of making ethylidene diacetate includes the reaction of acetaldehyde and acetic anhydride with the formation of ethylidene diacetate, which is an intermediate is used for the production of vinyl acetate; d. H. ei «procedure, which to a limited extent in technical scope has been carried out, including the "Hydrocarbon Process". 44 (11) (1965) 287, referenced may be. Another method involves the reduction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen, see U.S. Patent 35 79 566.

As a result, ethylidene diacetate was not used as a chemical intermediate because it was manufactured the use of rather costly raw materials presupposes, over which only a small amount can be decreed. Furthermore, the modern chemical technology has its interest in the exploitation of Ethylene as a starting material for the production of acetic anhydride, acetaldehyde, vinyl acetate and acetic acid directed The production of ethylene depends of course on the use of petroleum fractions that are also not available in any quantities, with ethylene not readily derived from carbon or Methane can be produced.

Auflage, Seite 374, Merck & Co., New Jersey [1968]). The use of non-petroleum raw materials for the manufacture of materials, which are commercially derived from ethylene, such as the four products above, was and is the subject of considerable research focusing predominantly on the application of carbonylation techniques are directed, d. H. the conversion of carbon monoxide (in the presence or in the absence of hydrogen) with organic materials. A variety of carbonylation techniques have been used with success Materials made, at least on a laboratory scale. Much of the early work on this one Territory goes back to Reppe ("Acetylene Chemistry", PB Report-18852-s, Charles A. Meyer & Co., Inc. [Translation], pages 162 and following [1949]). In none of these early works is there any Indication that ethylidene diacetate could be made by a carbonylation process. According to later Work, including, for example, US Pat. No. 2,727,902 by Reppe et al. referenced, were methanol, Carbon monoxide and hydrogen converted to »acetaldehyde dimethylacetal« under carbonylation conditions, which is also known as ethylidene dimethyl ether (compare Merck Index, 8th edition, page 374, Merck & Co., New Jersey [1968]). In fact, the acetals are the only gem-compounds known to be they can be made by carbonylation processes (see U.S. Patents 3,285,948 and 36 89 533).

Overall, significant research efforts have been made into carbonylation reactions been, in no case carbonylation process for the production of ethylidene diacetate although this material is highly desirable as a chemical intermediate.

It has now been found a process for the preparation of ethylidene diacetate, which by the above Claims is characterized.

The process according to the invention can be carried out in the vapor phase or in the liquid phase, the latter being preferred. If one works in the vapor phase, one carries carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methyl acetate (and / or dimethyl ether) together with the halide source into the reaction zone in which the materials come into contact with one another and react with one another. According to the preferred, in liquid Phase carried out embodiment of the process brings carbon monoxide, hydrogen and Methyl acetate (and / or dimethyl ether) with one present in the reaction zone and present in the liquid phase Reaction medium in contact and maintains this contact for a period of time that is necessary for the The course of the reaction is sufficient. According to this preferred embodiment (carried out in the liquid phase) the halide source can be a component of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase, so that they need not be introduced with the reactants. Part of what is in the liquid phase The reaction medium, which now contains ethylidene diacetate, can then be withdrawn from the reaction zone and to be worked up to obtain ethylidene diacetate. The ethylidene diacetal can then be used as such or converted to acetaldehyde plus acetic anhydride and / or vinyl acetate plus acetic acid will.

The overall reaction that seems to take place when using methyl acetate as a reactant can be to can be represented by the following chemical equation:

If, instead of methyl acetate, dimethyl ether is used as the reactant, the overall reaction proceeds slightly different and can be represented by the following chemical equation:

Mixtures of methyl acetate and dimethyl ether can of course also be used. Furthermore, the above equations that acetic acid is obtained as the primary reaction by-product, often instead of or other by-products are obtained in addition to acetic acid. The frequently observed other primary By-products are acetic anhydride and / or acetaldehyde. The nature and distribution of these by-products depends, as will be explained in more detail below, to a large extent on the one used Carbon monoxide / hydrogen ratio. It should be noted, however, that ethanol and other ethyl derivatives b5 are not formed to any significant extent, although traces of these products may be found.

However, it is unlikely that the desired ethylidene diacetate predominantly by the reaction (the reduction) of

Acetic anhydride is formed with the hydrogen present in the system, a reaction which occurs in the US-PS 35 79 566 is described. According to accepted postulates regarding the reaction mechanisms of such preferred catalyst systems (compare Khan and Martell, "Homogeneous Catalysis of Metal Complexes", Volume 1, Academic Press, New York [1974], pages 49 and 315) it is expected that the formation of organometallic complexes of such catalysts with acid anhydrides would be far less favored than the formation of such complexes with the expected reaction intermediates such as acyl halides. the smooth formation of such complexes with acyl halides leads to a slight reduction of the acyl halide, which the occurrence of a reduction in anhydride as a significant factor in the observed ethylene diacetate formation reaction would rule out.

Wenn man die Essigsäure für die Herstellung von weiterem Methylacetat in den Kreislauf zurückführt, verfügt man in der Praxis über ein keineThe acetic acid obtained as a by-product can easily be recovered and purified so that it can be used as such and / or reacted with methanol to form the methyl acetate reactant. The purification is particularly simple since the reaction medium is anhydrous, so that it is not necessary. Separate water in order to achieve concentrations corresponding to glacial acetic acid. If we trace back the acetic acid for the production of additional methyl acetate in the circulation, it has in practice a no

Process for the preparation of ethylidene diacetate which results in useless by-products.

Since methanol can easily be converted into dimethyl ether and / or methyl acetate with the aid of procedures known per se can be converted, the inventive method provides a simple method of conversion of methanol in ethylidene diacetate. Because methanol continues not to be made from materials based of petroleum products, the advantages of the present process are compared to the conventional techniques for the production of acetic anhydride. Acetaldehyde, vinyl acetate and acetic acid readily apparent.

The reactions described by the equations above are carried out in the presence of suitable catalyst systems carried out. The catalyst systems based on catalysts of the noble metals Group VIII, in particular based on catalysts based on palladium, iridium and Rhodium, and most preferably palladium and / or rhodium, are particularly advantageous. The effectiveness of these preferred noble metal catalyst systems is particularly with regard to the reaction rate and the concentration of the desired products through the simultaneous use of promoted organic promoters that are able to work with the catalyst from the noble metal of the group VIII to enter into a coordination connection. Suitable organic promoters are organic non-hydrocarbon materials, which have one or more electron-rich atoms in their molecular structure, the one or more electron pairs have those for the formation of coordinative connections with the Precious metal catalyst are available. Most organic promoters of this type can be used as Lewis bases for the particular anhydrous reaction system applied. The increase in Catalyst performance is also enhanced through the use of inorganic (especially metallic) promoters achieved, which are used instead of or together with the organic promoters. Suitable metallic promoters include the elements and / or compounds of elements having an atomic weight of more than 5 of the groups I A, II A, III A, IV B, VI B, the non-precious metals of group VIII and the Metals of the lanthanide and actinide groups of the periodic table, which is in the "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics ", 42nd Edition, Chemical Rubber Publishing Co., Cleveland, Ohio (1960), pages 448 and 449 is. The preferred inorganic promoters include the Group VI B metals and the Group VIII non-precious metals, particularly chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel, and most preferably chromium.

The surprising feature of the present method of the invention results from a further Comparison of the carbonylation reactions taking place here with those described in US Pat. No. 3,689,533. According to the process of this patent specification, catalysts are used which are similar to those according to the invention preferred, in which case water-containing reaction systems are used. Still will despite the use of substantial amounts of hydrogen in conjunction with carbon monoxide in the carbonylation reaction (compare in particular Example 10 of this patent) does not state that ethylidene diacetate would be formed. It is surprising that the simultaneous use of an essentially anhydrous Reaction system and hydrogen would influence the course of the reaction to such an extent that a product can be obtained that has not yet been in any way suspected to be by a carbonylation process could be made.

If you use dimethyl ether as the organic starting material (of course in addition to carbon monoxide and hydrogen) begins, it is to be assumed (although not proven) that the initial stage in the carbonylation of the Ether with the formation of methyl acetate. Although dimethyl ether is easily used as a starting material can use for the process according to the invention is the use of methyl acetate (as such or in the form of a mixture with dimethyl ether) particularly preferred.

If dimethyl ether is used as the starting material for the process according to the invention, dimethyl ether becomes converted to methyl acetate by carbonylation, while in a second reaction zone the Ethylidene diacetate formation reaction would occur. Different reaction conditions can be used in this procedure for the conversion of dimethyl ether to methyl acetate and the conversion of methyl acetate to use Ethylidendiacetai, so under conditions that are necessary for the reactions carried out in it are optimal. However, the use of separate reaction zones is not necessary because the conversion of dimethyl ether / u Methylaccüii at the same time, with the formation of the Äthylidendiacelats and in the same Reaction zone can be reached.

In addition to Dimethylüllier and / or methyl acetate are necessary components for the formation of Ethylidendiaeetat, Use carbon monoxide and hydrogen. These basic ingredients can be odor together Introduce separately into the reaction zone (s). When working in the vapor phase it is of course necessary to use the Halogcnidqiicllc to introduce together with the reaction parts, where mim sin wiprlnmm

mit den anderen Reaktionsteilnelimern oder getrennt einführen kann.with the other reactant buckets or separately.

It should be noted that hydrogen is not necessary for the conversion of dimethyl ether to methyl uceiate is. Assuming that carbon monoxide and hydrogen are introduced separately into the reaction / ones in which the ethylidene acetate is formed, the Ausgungsinateruilicn is preferably used in im essentially pure form as are commercially available. In each case, however, ■> inert diluents such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen. Methane and / or inert gases (/ for example helium. Argon, neon etc.). The presence of inert diluents of this type affects the desired carbonylation reactions, although it may be necessary in the presence of these gases, increase the total pressure to achieve the desired carbon monoxide and hydrogen partial pressures, ίο

All starting materials (i.e. carbon monoxide, hydrogen as well as methyl acetate and / or dimethyl ether) should be essentially anhydrous, since in this way the maintenance of the essentially anhydrous Conditions in the reaction zone is facilitated. The presence of small amounts of water, such as however, they can be found, for example, in the commercially available reactants. Normally However, what should be the presence of greater than 5 mole percent water in one or more of the reactants be avoided, the presence of less than 3 mole percent water being desirable and the Presence of less than 1.0 mole percent water are preferred. More important than the amount of water in the feed or recirculated streams introduced or introduced into the reaction zone is the concentration of free water plus alcoholic hydroxyl groups (which are formed in situ react of water), which is present in the reaction zone. In practice the molar ratio of (a) is water plus the molar equivalents of alcoholic hydroxyl groups to (b) the number of moles of dimethyl ether and / or Methyl acetate in the reaction zone is the most suitable measure for defining this concentration. Based on according to this definition, the ratio should preferably not exceed 0.1: 1. Lower values of this Ratio are advantageous, with optimal results being obtained when this ratio is equal to from about 0 to about 0.05: 1. When working in the vapor phase, this ratio can be easily achieved by controlling the content of water and / or free alcohol (for example methanol) in all Currents that are introduced into the reaction zone, depending on the amount of ether introduced and / or ester reactant appropriately. In the preferred mode of operation in liquid Phase, this ratio can be easily controlled by the fact that the present in the reaction zone, keeps the reaction medium present in the liquid phase in an essentially anhydrous state.

The presence of common organic impurities that are found in the commercial grades of Dimethyl ether and / or methyl acetate are present, however, do not pose a problem for the implementation of the Method of the invention.

As already indicated, the process according to the preferred embodiment is carried out in the liquid phase in Carried out in the presence of a substantially anhydrous, liquid reaction medium. Since water is no As the product of the reaction, one can maintain essentially anhydrous conditions in the liquid reaction medium easily achieved by the fact that the introduced into the reaction zone necessary reactants and / or circulating currents (the more precisely are reasonably dry and free of alcoholic hydroxyl groups (i.e. free Alcohol). The reaction medium present in the liquid phase thus contains reactants (carbon monoxide. Hydrogen, dimethyl ether and / or methyl acetate), reaction products (ethylene diacetate and acetic acid) and the halide required to carry out the desired reaction and, if appropriate by-products formed, which usually include acetaldehyde and / or acetic anhydride.

Solvents or diluents can be used to facilitate the reaction in the liquid phase. The solvents or diluents are preferably materials required in the reaction system are, such as excess dimethyl ether or excess methyl acetate and / or methyl halide and / or acetyl halide (the preferred halide sources) and / or by-products that usually formed in the reaction system, such as acetic acid. Acetaldehyde and / or acetic anhydride. Excess dimethyl ether and / or excess dimethyl acetate are the preferred reaction diluents, the preferred materials used alternately being acetic acid and / or acetic anhydride are.

The most suitable inert solvents or diluents are those of Hydrocarbons free of olefinic unsaturation, in particular the paraffinic, cycloparaffinic and aromatic hydrocarbons such as octane, benzene, toluene, the xylenes and cyclododecane. Other suitable Solvents include chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and acetone. If you look at the reaction solvents or diluents that are not involved are used, they are preferably selected in such a way that that the solvent or the diluent has a boiling point which is sufficient differs from the constituents of the reaction mixture, so that the separation of the constituents of the Reaction mixing is facilitated by the diluent or the solvent. to

Materialien, die in situ mit den anderen Bestand-As already indicated, the reaction requires the presence of a halide, which according to the preferred Embodiment of working in the liquid phase is a component of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase. Suitable halides are bromide or iodide or mixtures thereof, iodide being preferred The halide is usually and predominantly in the form of methyl halide. Acetyl halide, hydrogen halide or mixtures thereof are present and can be introduced into the liquid reaction medium in such a form will. However, it is sufficient, especially in the case of batch operation, to add the materials in such a form to the introduce liquid phase that one or more of the materials mentioned, d. H. Methyl halide, acetyl halide and / or hydrogen halide) are formed in situ. Materials that are in situ with the other constituents

With the continuous Operation in which the reaction by-products are separated off (for example by distillation and / or extraction techniques) and are recycled into the reaction medium, are organic halides, such as methyl halide and / or acetyl halide as components of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase present and can be recovered and returned as such to the reaction zone, so that only a small amount of fresh halide has to be fed to the recovery to compensate for any losses.

The amount in which the halide can be contained in the reaction medium present in the liquid phase should depend on the amount of ether and / or ester reactant introduced into the reaction zone but can vary within a wide range. Typically 0.5 to 1000 moles are used Esters or ethers per equivalent of the halide, more preferably 1 to 300 moles per equivalent, and even more preferred 2 to 100 moles per equivalent. In general, higher ratios of halide to ether and / or result Ester reactants result in an increased rate of reaction. According to a typical practical Embodiment contains the reaction medium present in the liquid phase, apart from water and used nonreaction solvents or diluents normally the following materials in the specified concentration ranges expressed as mole percent unless otherwise stated:

Halogenid, Gewichtsprozent (als enthaltende Menge) 0,1 bis 75%Halide, percent by weight (as containing amount) 0.1 to 75%

Acetaldehyd 0 bis 40%Acetaldehyde 0 to 40%

Essigsäure 1 bis 75%Acetic acid 1 to 75%

Essigsäureanhydrid 0 bis 80%Acetic anhydride 0 to 80%

Äthylidendiacetat Ibis 60%Ethylidene diacetate Ibis 60%

Dimethyläther 0 bis 50%Dimethyl ether 0 to 50%

Methylacetat 5 bis 90%Methyl acetate 5 to 90%

If you use solvents that do not appear in the reaction, they usually make 5 to 95 percent by weight, more preferably 10 to 90 percent by weight and even more preferably 15 to 80 percent by weight of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase.

In the above list, the amounts of dissolved carbon monoxide and hydrogen are not included, which must be present in the reaction medium present in the liquid phase so that the desired reaction or reactions can take place.

It should be noted that the reaction media present in the liquid phase, the specified concentration ranges meet, can easily be worked up to obtain ethylidene diacetate, since they exhibit a significant difference in the volatility of the materials contained therein. Methyl halides are generally highly volatile materials. You can therefore easily with the help of distillation and / or separate extraction techniques, recover and return to the reaction zone. Also the acetic acid present in the system and the acetic anhydride present in the system can without further to be recovered. Ethylene diacetate has a much lower volatility and can therefore be obtained in any desired purity. The inert solvents or diluents, if present, they can be readily selected for their volatility that their recovery and reuse is facilitated.

As already mentioned, the process of the invention is preferably carried out in the presence of a liquid Phase present reaction medium carried out, which is contained in a reaction zone. One can use a single reaction zone or a plurality of reaction zones connected in series or in parallel. That The process can for its part be run batchwise, semi-continuously or continuously. The reaction zone can be one or more autoclaves or a longer tubular zone or series of such Have zones. Of course, the reaction zone should be constructed so that it is able to withstand the reaction temperature and pressure and should be made of materials that oppose the reaction conditions are inert. Suitable inert materials for the execution of the reaction zone are Tantalum, zirconium, various stainless steels and hastelloys. The reaction zone is suitably with internal and / or external devices equipped for the dissipation of heat, the heat of the exothermic Absorbing the reaction and maintaining appropriate temperature control during the Facilitate the course of the reaction. The reaction zone is suitably designed so that sufficient Mixing results so that there is adequate contact between the carbon monoxide and hydrogen reactants and the ether-Z acetate reactants. Any will be apparent to those skilled in the art use known agitation devices including vibratory, Schottel and agitation techniques etc. Normally the reactants will be introduced into the reaction zone at a point which is below the level of the reaction medium present in the zone and present in the liquid state so that mixing and adequate contact is achieved by gas injection techniques.

The method according to the invention can be carried out within a moderate temperature range. For example, temperatures of 20 to 500 0 C suitable, with temperatures desirably from 80 to 35O 0 C and temperatures are preferably from 100 to 250 ° C. Temperatures lower than those mentioned can be used, although this results in lower reaction rates. It is also possible to use higher temperatures than those mentioned, although this does not result in any significant practical advantages.

The reaction time is not an essential parameter of the process according to the invention and depends to a great extent The extent depends on the temperature used and the concentration of the reactants. Suitable Reaction times (i.e. times sufficient for the ethylidene diacetate formation reaction to take place) for the in Liquid phase embodiments typically range from 0.05 to 20 hours. The reaction time in a batch system is clear in itself. With one continuously In guided operation, the dwell time is defined as the quotient obtained by dividing the volume of the in the liquid reaction medium present in the reaction zone by the velocity (in units of volume per hour), with which the dimethyl ether and / or the methyl acetate (and / was both the fresh charge as well as any soft recycled material) are fed into the reaction zone.

In the preferred embodiments, which are carried out in the liquid phase, the total pressure of the reaction is also an unimportant process parameter, provided that the pressure is high enough to keep the reaction medium in the liquid phase and to achieve the appropriate carbon monoxide and hydrogen partial pressures will. The appropriate carbon monoxide and hydrogen partial pressures are each preferably in a range of 0.35 to 352 kg / cm 2 (5 to 500 psi), more preferably (psi 25-3000) in a range from 1.76 to 211 kg / cm 2 . However, wider partial pressure ranges can be used, ranges from 0.007 to 1050 kg / cm 2 (0.1-15,000 psi) being applicable.

The stoichiometry of the chemical equations given above suggests that the for Formation of ethylidene diacetate leading to reaction a molar ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen Requires 2: 1 to 4: 1 and depends on whether you are using dimethyl ether or methyl acetate (or mixtures thereof) used as starting material. It has been found, however, that much broader molar ratios of Can apply carbon monoxide to hydrogen, roughly speaking in a range from 1: 100 to 100: 1, more advantageously in a range from 50: 1 to 1:50 and preferably in a range from 10: 1 to 1:10. The best results are achieved with carbon monoxide / hydrogen mixtures. the stoichiometric Carbon monoxide / hydrogen ratio are approximated. Carbon monoxide / hydrogen molar ratios in the range from 0.5: 1 to 5: 1 are therefore particularly preferred.

The molar ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen also affects the nature of the by-products obtained. The above equations indicate that acetic acid is formed as a by-product. It however, other by-products can also be formed, such as in particular acetic anhydride and acetaldehyde. For example, if you keep the other conditions in a liquid phase system constant maintains, by increasing the molar ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen, the molar ratio of Increase acetic anhydride to acetic acid formed. You can do otherwise by reducing the carbon monoxide / hydrogen molar ratio Increase the molar ratio of acetaldehyde formed to acetic acid formed. The method according to the invention thus enables considerable flexibility in terms of distribution of the available by-products.

When operating in the liquid phase, the applied molar ratios of carbon monoxide plus Hydrogen to dimethyl ether and / or methyl acetate is dictated by the partial pressure criteria given above, since the partial pressure and the concentration of these normally gaseous reactants in the liquid phase are directly proportional.

After the reaction has been carried out, the reaction effluent is withdrawn from the reaction zone and transferred to a distillation zone, which may have one or a series of distillation columns. In these columns, ethylidene diacetate and the acetic acid (and / or Acetic acid and / or acetaldehyde) obtained while unreacted and partially reacted materials and the halogen-containing constituents of the reaction medium are recovered and returned to the reaction zone will. The catalyst can also be recovered and, if desired, returned to the reaction zone to be led back.

As already mentioned, the ethylidene diacetate formation reaction according to the invention is advantageously used in Carried out in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst. According to a preferred embodiment based this carbonylation catalyst is based on the use of one or more catalysts of the Group VIII noble metals, i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and / or platinum. the Catalysts based on palladium, iridum and rhodium are preferred with the products on based on rhodium and / or palladium are particularly advantageous and therefore particularly preferred.

Wenn man Rhodium als beispielhaften Vertreter für die bevorzugten Edelmetallcarbonylierungskatalysatoren ansieht sind Beispiele von Formen, in denen der Edelmetallcarbonylierungskatalysator dem System zugeführt werden kann, neben den bereits erwähnten Formen b5The carbonylation catalyst, which is a Group VIII noble metal of the periodic table may be used in any suitable form; H. in the valence state zero or one superior form. For example, the catalyst can be used as a metal in finely divided form or in the form a carbonate, an oxide, a hydroxide, a nitrate, a bromide, an iodine, a chloride, a low molecular weight alcoholate (for example an alcoholate with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, such as methylate or Ethylate), a phenolate or a metal carboxylate, in which the carboxylation of an alkanecarboxylic acid With 1 to 20 carbon atoms is derived In a similar way one can complex of metals use, for example, the metal carbonyls, such as iridium and rhodium carbonyls, and also other complexes, such as the carbonyl halides, for example iridium tricarbonyl chloride [Ir (CO) 3Cl] 2, or the acetylacetonates, for example rhodium acetylacetonate, Rh (CsH7O2) 3, use. One can also use preformed ligand-like Use complexes such as dichloro-bis (triphenylphosphine) -pal! Adium, dichloro-bis (triphenylphosphine) -rhodium and trichlorotris (pyridine) rhodium. For reaction systems in the liquid phase, the noble metal catalyst can be used in a form which dissolves in the reaction medium present in the liquid phase from the beginning or in the course of time, so that a homogeneous catalyst system is obtained. Alternatively, the catalyst can also be used in insoluble (or only partially soluble) form, so that a heterogeneous catalyst system is created. Amounts of the carbonylation catalyst (calculated as the noble metal contained, based on the total amount of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase) of only about 1 χ \ 0 ~ A percent by weight (1 ppm) are effective, although amounts of at least 10 ppm are normally used. suitably employing at least 25 ppm and more preferably at least 50 ppm. The upper concentration limit on the amount of carbonylation catalyst is chosen more by economic considerations than by rate or selectivity advantages. These limits normally suggest that noble metal containing no more than about 50,000 ppm is normally used. An optimal compromise between reaction rate and economic criteria would normally be the use of amounts of the noble metal contained in the carbonylation catalyst, based on the total weight of the reaction medium present in the liquid phase, between about 10 and about 50,000 ppm, suitably between about 100 and 25,000 ppm more preferably recommend between about 500 and 10,000 ppm.

The effectiveness of these preferred noble metal catalyst systems can, particularly with respect to the The rate of reaction and the concentration of the desired products can be increased in that promoters are used at the same time. Effective promoters are inorganic in nature, whereby one also Mixtures (or compounds) of organic and inorganic components can be used. Suitable organic promoters are non-hydrocarbon materials that are capable of a coordination compound enter into with the noble metal of group VIII of the catalyst and which in their molecular structure have one or more electron pairs that are responsible for the formation of coordinate bonds with the Precious metal catalyst are available. These promoters can be shared with the respondents and introduce the reaction zone or may supply them together with the noble metal of Group VIII, by forming ligand complexes with the noble metal before inserting the noble metal-ligand complex into the Introduces reaction zone. If one uses pre-formed ligand complexes, the simultaneous use is of promoters (either organic or inorganic in origin) not necessary, although one can of course make use of it.

Geeignete organische Promotoren sind Organophosphinverbindungen, Organoanoarsinverbindungen, Organostibinverbindungen, Organostickstoffverbindungen und Organosauerstoffverbindungen. Besonders bevorzugt sind die tertiären Amine der folgenden allgemeinen FormelPreferred organic promoters are the organonitrogen or organophosphorus compounds which the nitrogen atoms or the phosphorus atoms are at least partially trivalent. Many of these preferred Compounds can also contain oxygen atoms, such as l-methyl-2-pyrolidinone and Ν, Ν, Ν ', Ν'-tetramethylurea. Particularly preferred are the tertiary amines of the following general ones formula

Die tertiären Phosphine der folgenden allgemeinen Formelin which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 , which can be identical or different, denote alkyl groups, cycloalkylene groups or aryl groups each having not more than about 10 carbon atoms. Also particularly preferred are the heterocyclic amines of the pyridine type, such as pyridine itself, the picolines, quinoline and methylquinoline. The tertiary phosphines of the following general formula

Beispiele für besonders geeignete Phosphine sind Trinicthylphosphin, Tri-(tert.-butyl)-phosphin, Tri-{n-butyl)-phosphin, Tricyclohexylphosphin und Triphenylphosphin.in which R 4 , R 5 and R 6 have the same meanings as the groups R 1 , R 2 and R 1 are likewise particularly preferred. Examples of particularly suitable phosphines are trinicthylphosphine, tri- (tert-butyl) -phosphine, tri- {n-butyl) -phosphine, tricyclohexylphosphine and triphenylphosphine.

The amount of organic promoter used depends on the amount of that present in the reaction zone Noble metal catalyst. Usually the amount will be adjusted to be at least 0.1, suitably at least 0.2 and preferably at least 0.3 moles of the promoter compound per mole of the noble metal in the reaction zone are present. On the other hand, there is little benefit in getting one applies large excess of the organic promoter per mole of the noble metal catalyst. Normally are not more than 500 moles of promoter per mole of the noble metal catalyst in the during operation Reaction zone used. Desirably there will be less than 200 moles of promoter per mole of noble metal and even more preferably less than 100 moles of promoter are used per mole of noble metal catalyst. Particularly Advantageous results are obtained if the number of moles of the organic promoter per mole of the in the noble metal catalyst present in the reaction zone in the range between 0.2 and 200 moles per mole and more preferably holds a range between 0.3 and 100 moles per mole.

The stated proportions of organic promoter to noble metal naturally assume that the Promoter and the noble metal are introduced into the reaction zone in the form of separate compounds. If, which is also stated as feasible, preformed ligand complexes from the organic Promoter and the noble metal are formed, the amount of promoter is of course determined by stoichiometry of the complex. However, in order to promote the maintenance of the stability complex, one can if desired, additional promoter either periodically or continuously during the course of the t-o Feed reaction into the reaction zone.

Solche Metall-Polymer-Komplexe und Verfahren /u ihrer Herstellung sind bekannt, wozu auf Z. M. Michalska und D. E. Webster »Supported Homogeneous Catalysts«, CHEMTECH, Februar 1975.Another type of organically promoted noble metal catalysts which are suitable as carbonylation catalysts for the process according to the invention are those compounds in which the metal of the noble metal catalyst is bonded to a polymeric substrate, which can be organic or inorganic in nature. Such metal-polymer complexes can be regarded as heterogeneous in the physical sense because of their insolubility, even though they have chemical properties that correspond more to homogeneous than heterogeneous catalysis. Such metal-polymer complexes and processes / and their production are known, for which reference is made to ZM Michalska and DE Webster "Supported Homogeneous Catalysts", CHEMTECH, February 1975.
