Abstract

The process utilises a moist compost of average degree of ripeness, obtd. by biological decompsn. from waste and/or sludge, as the mass to react with the excrement. The compost has a water content of 30-55%, a pH of 5-6, and organic substance content of 55-70%, little mould, a fine, crumbly structure, a brown, turf-like appearance and an earthy smell. It also contains the microorganisms Actinomycetes globisporus, flavus and farinosus, fusngi (Coprinas spec., Aspergillus spec. and Mucor) as well as mites, nematodes and enchitrae. The process is used esp. for the battery raising of pig and small animals (e.g., fowl) whose excrement can lead to stomach and intestinal infection. Cleaning their stalls/pens is also hazardous for humans due to the high ammonia content of the air and other noxious gases. This process allows the excrement to be degraded in situ, thus avoiding these problems and improving the animals' health.
