Abstract

An automatic regulating and change-over valve is described in which a movable piston rod carrying three piston discs can cover or uncover ports in the valve housing and so change the direction of flow of the incoming water flowing into a filter system. Change in the resistance of the latter causes a control valve to open, admitting pressure into a chamber in the valve and thereby causing the pistons to be moved, the ports covered or uncovered, and so the route of the water flow to the filter changed, and contaminated water diverted to drain. Valve is used for water filters with back-flushing facilities, as employed for clarifying drinking water or swimming pool water. Being responsive to change in water flow (caused by an increased in back pressure of the filter as it becomes dirty) rather than to changes in pressure, the valve more truly reflects the condition of the filter. Its operation is independent of external power supplies and requires no timing devices and is essentially self-actuated.
