Abstract

Bitumen modifiers consisting of solid copolymers of (a) 3-20 wt % (meth)acrylic acid, (b) 3-20% unsat. polymerisable basic N cpd. with marked proton acceptor properties, (c) 30-94 wt % over 6C alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid, and (d) 0-50% one or more monomers with not more than one polymerisable C=C bond. mol.wt of the copolymers is 50000-500000. Due to hydrogen bonding in the additives, they give non-tacky brittle materials, which are easily pulverised, bandled and stored at room temp. The temp. interval between break pt. and softening pt. of bitumen compsns. is extended. Adhesion to mineral fillers, e.g. gravel, is improved and unaffected by water or moisture.
