Description
Die Erfindung betrifft Schmierölzusätze mit oxydätionsverhindernden
und das Lasttragevermögen verbessernden Eigenschaften. ·""■■■· .
Es ist bekannt, daß man Antioxydantien durch Umsetzung von
Alkylphenolen mit Schwefelmonö- oder -dichlorid herstellen
kann; allerdings neigen derartige. Zusätze dazu, Korrosion
an Kupfer zu verursachen, und zwar wahrscheinlich aufgrund
der Anwesenheit von korrosiv wirkenden Schwefelverbindungen wie beispielsweise sulfochlorierten AlkylphenOjen.
Es sind bereits Versuche unternommen worden >
die .Gegenwart von Chlor zu vermeiden, indem Alkylphenole allein mit Schwefel
sulfuriert wurden, allerdings haben sich diese Verfahren aufgrund der Reaktionsträgheit als nicht durchführbar erwiesen,
überraschenderweise wurde jetzt festgestellt, daß

es möglich ist, sulfurierte Alkylphenole unter Verwendung von Schwefel als Sulfurierungsmittel herzustellen.
Erfindungsgemäß wird daher ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von sulfurierten Alkylphenolen vorgeschlagen, das dadurch
gekennzeichnet ist, daß ein Alkylphenol der allgemeinen Formel

in welcher R eine aliphatische Gruppe und m und η ganze
Zahlen von 1 bis einschließlich 5 unter der Voraussetzung·
bedeuten, daß m plus η nicht mehr als 6 ergeben, mit Schwefel
in Gegenwart eines organischen Amins mit einem pK, von 2 bis 12 umgesetzt wird.
Die einzusetzenden Alkylphenole entsprechen der allgemeinen Formel

in welcher m und η ganze Zahlen von 1 bis 5 bedeuten. Bevorzugt
werden Alkylphenole eingesetzt, in deren Formel m und η jeweils 1 sind, gegebenenfalls können aber auch Alkyldihydroxybenzole
(m =2) und Dialkylphenole (n = 2) verwendet
werden. Wenn η 2 oder mehr bedeutet, können die Alkylgruppen R gegebenenfalls verschieden sein. Vorzugsweise weist die

Cycloalkylgruppen sein können, mindestens 3 C-Atome, wie beispielsweise
etwa 6 bis 20 C-Atome auf. Derartige Gruppen sind beispielsweise t-Butyl-, s-Butyl-,.Amyl-, Hexyl-, Cyclohexyl-,
Octyl-, Isooctyl-, Nonyl-, Decyl-, Dodecyl-, Octadecyl- oder
Eicosy!gruppen.
Anstelle der erwähnten Alkyl- oder Cycloalkylphenole können
auch andere Phenole der gleichen allgemeinen Formel verwendet werden, in der die Gruppe R eine aliphatische Gruppe ist,
die beispielsweise aus der Polymerisation eines Monoolefins stammen und beispielsweise eine Alkenylgruppe sein kann.
Geeignete Olefine sind beispielsweise Äthylen, Propylen,
Butylen oder 1-Hexylen. Derartige Alkenylgruppen weisen im
allgemeinen etwa 20 bis 500 C-Atome wie beispielsweise etwa 60 bis 70 C-Atome auf. . .
Das einzusetzende Amin muß einen pK,-Wert zwischen 2 bis 12
und vorzugsweise von etwa .2 bis 10 aufweisen. Der pK. -Wert ist der negative Logarithmus zur Basis 10 der Gleichgewichtskonstante
K. der Reaktion dieser Base mit Wasser. Die allgemeine Gleichung hierfür lautet wie folgt: .

Geeignete primäre Amine sind beispielsweise das als Primen 81-R bezeichnete primäre Amin mit tertiären Alkylgruppen
mit 12 bis 14 C-Atomen (pKb = 4,2) und die 2-, 3- und 4-Aminopyridine
(pK. = 7,1, 7,9 bzw. 4,8). Geeignete sekundäre Amine sind beispielsweise Pyrrolidin (pKfe = 2,73), Piperazin ■
(pKb = 4,19), Piperidin (pKb = 2,80), Morpholin (pKfe = 5,67),
Pyridin-4-on (pKb = 10,70), Imidazol (pKb = 7,00), Pyrazol
(pKb = 11,5) oder Di-n-butylamin (pKfe = 2,72). Als tertiäre
Amine können beispielsweise Pyridin (pK. = 8,86), 2-, 3- oder 4-Methylpyridin (pKb = 8,0, 8,3 bzw. 8,0), Chinazolin (pKfe =
10,69), Cinnolin (pKb = 11,36), Pyridazin (pKfe = 11,90),
Chinolin (pKb = 9,15)j Isochinolin (pKfe = 8,86) oder Acridin
(pK. = 8,40) eingesetzt werden.
Vorzugsweise werden heterocyclische Amine mit einer freien Aminogruppe, und zwar insbesondere einer sekundären Aminogruppe
verwendet. Insbesondere können als sekundäre Amine Piperidin oder Morpholin Verwendung finden. Als speziell geeignet
haben sich die sekundären Amine erwiesen, die bei Raumtemperatur flüssig sind.
Das Molverhältnis von Alkylphenolen zu Schwefel kann variiert werden wie beispielsweise von etwa 2:1 bis etwa 1:2. Die Menge
an zuzusetzendem Amin ist gering wie beispielsweise 0,1 bis
10 Gew.% und insbesondere etwa 1 bis 2 Gew.^, bezogen auf
das Gewicht von Alkylphenol und Schwefel.

Die sulfurierten Alkylphenole werden aus Alky!phenolen, Schwefelblume
und dem sekundären Amiη unter Erwärmen und Rühren
hergestellt. Die Temperatur-der Mischung kann etwa 100 bis
2.000C wie beispielsweise etwa 150°"C betragen. Die Reaktionsmischung
wird vorzugsweise bei diesen Temperaturen eine ausreichend
lange Zeit tfie beispielsweise etwa 45 Minuten gerührt.
Anschließend wird die Reäktiönsmischuhg auf eine
höhere Temperatur wie etwa 170 bis 19Ö°C und vorzugsweise etwa l8ö°C erwärmt und bei dieser höheren Temperatur eine
längere Zeit wie beispielsweise 8 bis 12 Stunden und vorzugsweise etwa 10 Stunden gehalten* Abschließend wird die Mischung
mit Stickstoff gespült, und zwar beispielsweise etwa 2 Stunden,
Etwas günstigere Ergebnisse werden erhalten* wenn Alkylphenol
und Schwefel zuerst unter Rühren erhitzt werden j beispielsweise
auf etwa 1200C, und wenn erst dann das sekundäre Ämin
zugefügt wird. .
Um die Bildung von Feststoffen durch Sublimation in den
kühleren Teilen der Apparatur zu verringern, wobei es sich bei diesen Feststoffen um nicht umgesetztes Phenol. üiid Reaktionsprodukte
aus Schwefel und den Aminen.handelt-s .hä% es

sind beispielsweise n-Butanol, Amylalkohol, Isoheptanol oder
andere Alkohole mit Siedebereichen unter l80°C.
Die Menge des als Lösungsmittel verwendeten Alkohols kann
stark variieren und liegt im allgemeinen zwischen etwa 5 bis
25 Gew.% wie beispielsweise 15 Gew.%> bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht
von Alky!phenolen, Schwefel und Amin.
Die Reaktionsprodukte der Umsetzung sind Mischungen aus Mono- und Polysulfiden der Alkylphenole. Außerdem enthält die Reak-.
tionsmischung meist noch andere Verbindungen wie beispielsweise nicht umgesetztes Alkylphenol. Bei Umsetzung von 2,6-Dit-butylphenol
in Abwesenheit eines Lösungsmittels ergab die Analyse mit Hilfe der Flüssigkeitschromatographie einen Gehalt
an etwa 2,0 Gew.5$ Monosulfid, 12,0 Ge\i.% Disulfid, 19,0 Gew.#
Trisulfid und 5,0 Gew.JS Tetrasulfid. Bei Verwendung von
n-Butanol als Lösungsmittel wurde ebenfalls das Trisulfid als Hauptumsetzungsprodukt erhalten. Das Endprodukt der Reaktion
ist daher eine Mischung aus Verbindungen der allgemeinen Formel

Die sulfurierten Alkylphenole werden Schmierölen in geringen
Mengen als Additive zugesetzt, da sie als Antioxydantien
und als Lasttragevermögenverbesserer wirksam sind. Sie können auch in geringen Gewichtsmengen zu Treibstoffen wie Benzin
oder Diesel zugesetzt werden. .
Die Schmieröle können tierische, pflanzliche oder mineralische
öle sein, wie beispielsweise Petroleumölfraktionen von Naphtha
bis Spindelölen und Schmierölen mit SAE-Werten von 30, 40 oder
50, ferner Rhizinusöl, Fischöle oder oxydierte Mineralöle.
Geeignete synthetische Esterschmieröle sind beispielsweise
Diester wie Di-octyl-adipat, Dioctyl-sebacat, Didecyl-acelat,
Tridecyl-adipat, Didecyl-succinat, Didecyl-glutarat oder
deren Mischungen. Außerdem können als synthetische Ester auch Polyester verwendet werden, die durch Umsetzung von PoIyalkoholen
wie Trimethylolpropan oder Pentaerythritol mit Monocarbonsäuren wie Buttersäure, Capronsäure, Caprylsäure oder
Pelargonsäure unter Bildung der entsprechenden Tri- oder Tetraester hergestellt werden.
Gegebenenfalls können als Basisöle auch komplexe Ester Einsatz finden, wie beispielsweise solche, die durch Veresterung
von Dicarbonsäuren, Glykolen und einem Alkohol und/oder einer Monocarbonsäure hergestellt werden.

Die sulfurierten Alkylphenole werden zu den Schmierölen in Mengen von etwa 0,01 bis 10 Gew.% wie beispielsweise O5I bis
5 Gew./5, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht von öl und sulfuriertem
Alkylphenol zugesetzt.
Die Schmieröle können gegebenenfalls andere Zusätze wie beispielsweise Dispergiermittel wie Polybuten-succinimide,
Viskositätsindexverbesserer wie beispielsweise Vinylacetat/ Fumarat-Mischpolymere, Korrosionsinhibitoren wie beispielsweise
Diolester oder weitere Antioxydantien wie beispielsweise phenolische Verbindungen enthalten.
Die Erfindung wird im folgenden anhand der Beispiele näher
erläutert.
Die sulfurierten Alkylphenole wurden nach dem folgenden Verfahren
hergestellt:
(a) Alkylphenol, Schwefel und Piperidin wurden unter Rühren auf 1500C erhitzt und 4 5 Minuten bei dieser Temperatur
belassen.
(b) Die Temperatur der Reaktionsmischung wurde dann auf l80°C erhöht und 90 Minuten hierbei belassen.

(c) Die Reaktionsmischung wurde dann zwei Stunden bei l80°C mit Stickstoff gespült.
Einzelheiten der Umsetzungen und die Ergebnisse des ASTM D-130-Kupferkorrosionstestes
sind in der folgenden Tabelle zusammengestellt. Zu Vergleichszwecken wurde ein Alkylphenol mit
Schwefel in Abwesenheit eines schwefelfreien sekundären Amins

Sulfurierte Alkylphenole wurden u-ntep Rühren' durch Erhitzen
auf 120°0 aus Alkylphenol und Schwefel hergestellt. Dania wurde

Morpholin zugesetzt und die Temperatur der Reaktionsmischunc
unter Einleiten von Stickstoff auf l80°C erhöht. Wenn meist nach etwa 5 bis 15 Stunden die Menge des in einer Waschflasche
mit Natronlauge aufgefangenen HpS konstant blieb,
wurde die Temperatur auf 120 C erniedrigt und die bewegliche Flüssigkeit im Vakuum 3 bis 6 Stunden bei 150 mm Hg behandelt.
Bei jedem Versuch wurden die Produkte mit einem mineralischen Basisöl mit einer Viskosität von 150 Saybolt-Sekunden
bei 37,80C auf einen Gehalt an 75 % Wirkstoff verdünnt,
Einzelheiten der Umsetzungen und die Ergebnisse des ASTM D-130 Kupferkorrosionstestes sind in der folgenden
Tabelle angegeben:

Sulfurierte Alkylphenole wurde zu einem Mineralschmieröl mit
einer Viskosität von 15.0 Saybolt-Sekunden bei 37,80C in einer
Menge von 1,0 Gew.% zugesetzt.' Die'Lasttrageeigenschaft wurde
nach 1 Stunde bei einer-Last von 60 kg bestimmt. Das. Basisöl
ergab ohne Zusätze Rillen mit einer Tiefe von 2,5 mm.
Zur Bestimmung der antioxydativen Wirksamkeit wurde die
Schnelligkeit der Korrosion an einem Wellenlager nach Staudt

Das Basisöl enthielt ein Polyamin als Flamminhibitor und ein Äthylen/Propylen-Mischpolymeres als Hochleistungsverbesserungs·
mittel auf einem SAE lOW-30-Wert.
10 Mol (2060 g) 2,6-Di-t-butylphenol, 10 Mol (320 g) Schwefelblumen
und 372 g Isoheptanol wurden in ein Umsetzungsgefäß eingebracht. Nach Steigerung der Temperatur auf 1200C wurden
96 g (1J Gew./S, bezogen auf Alkylphenol plus Schwefel) Morpholin
zugesetzt. Dann wurde die Temperatur auf l80°C erhöht und 20 Stunden unter Stickstoffspülung beibehalten. In einer
Waschflasche mit Natronlauge wurden 115 g Schwefelwasserstoff aufgefangen. Das Lösungsmittel wurde dann im Vakuum entfernt
und die Temperatur bei einem Vakuum von 150 mm Hg auf 900C
erhöht, bis die aus der Vakuumpumpe austretenden Gase Bleiacetatpapier nicht mehr verfärbten, das heißt also, daß das

Produkt nur noch sehr wenig Schwefelwasserstoff enthielt. Die braune Flüssigkeit wurde dann'auf 75 % Wirkstoff mit
einem 150 SSU-Schmieröl verdünnt und wies einen Gehalt an
6,4 Gew.% Schwefel auf. ' . "
Das in Beispiel 4 beschriebene Verfahren wurde wiederholt,
wobei 1075 g Ethyl 733 (eine Mischung aus Mono-, Di- und Tri-t-butylphenolen im Verhältnis von etwa 15:75:10) anstelle
des 2,6-Di-t-butylphenols, l60 g Schwefel, 25 g Morpholin,
127 g Amylalkohol anstelle des Isoheptanols eingesetzt wurden und die Reaktion anstatt 20 Stunden 7 Stunden bei l80°C
durchgeführt wurde. Das auf einen Wirkstoffgehalt von 75 % verdünnte Produkt wies einen Schwefelgehalt von 7,5 Gew.5S
auf.
Das in Beispiel 5 beschriebene Verfahren wurde wiederholt,,
wobei aber nur I1IO g Amylalkohol verwendet wurden und die
Reaktion 20 Stunden bei l80GC durchgeführt wurde. Das auf
einen Wirkstoffgehalt von 75 Gew.% verdünnte Produkt wies einen Schwefeigehalt von 6,4 Gew.? auf.

Das in Beispiel 5 beschriebene Verfahren wurde wiederholt,
wobei aber anstelle des Amylalkohols 75S6 g n-Butanol verwendet
wurden. Das auf einen Wirkstoffgehalt von 75 Gew.%
verdünnte Produkt wies einen Schwefelgehalt von 7,5 Gew.#
auf.

Claims (11)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung sulfurierter Alkylphenole, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß ein Alky!phenol der allgemeinen
Formel Rn-+- -Jf-(OH) , in welcher R eine aliphatische
Gruppe und m und η ganze Zahlen von 1 bis 5 unter der Voraussetzung bedeuten,'daß m plus η nicht mehr als 6
sind, mit Schwefel in Gegenwart eines organischen Amins mit einem pK.-Wert von zwischen '2 bis 12 umgesetzt wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß mit einem Amin mit einem ρK, -Wert zwischen 2 bis 10 umgesetzt
wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß 'das Mol verhältnis von Alkylphenol zu Schwefel etwa
2:1 bis etwa 1:2 beträgt.
H. Verfahren nach 'Anspruch 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Amin in Mengen von etwa 0,1 bis 10 Gevi.%, bezogen
auf das Gewicht von Alkylphenol und Schwefel, zugesetzt wird. .
5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß als Amin eine heterocyclische Verbindung mit"einer
vorzugsweise sekundären Aminogruppe eingesetzt wird.

6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein bei Umgebungstemperatur flüssiges Amin eingesetzt
wird.
7. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Alkylphenol eingesetzt wird, in dessen allgemeiner
Formel m und η beide 1 bedeuten.
8. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Alkylphenol eingesetzt wird, in dessen allgemeiner
Formel jede aliphatische Gruppe R mindestens 3 C-Atome
und vorzugsweise 6 bis 20 C-Atome aufweist.
