Abstract

Finely comminuted, partially crystalline polyolefine is heated at a temp. lower by 10-40 degrees C than the m.pt. of the polyolefin crystallites in a hydrocarbon(s) opt. halogenated having a b.pt. lower by 50-200 degrees C than the m.pt. of the polyolefine crystallites, and in the presence of water, which prevents the polyolefine particles from coalescing under a pressure equal to or higher than the vapour press. of the (halogeno) hydrocarbon at the temp. of the reaction. The resulting gel particles suspended in water are then expanded by releasing the pressure at a temp. lower by 10-80 degrees C than the m.pt. of the polyolefine crystallites. Polyolefine foam particles produced by this method have good sinterability. Used in upholstery, life-belts, heat-and sound-insulations.
