Abstract

Cylindrical reactor for the partial vapour phase catalytic oxidation of organic cpds. has solid catalyst chips (2-4 mm) charged into radially segmented beds interspaced by plate heat exchange elements of similar form and a typical surface or 10-100 m2/m3 reactor bed volume. The process is applicable to reactions with oxygen, releasing over 40 Kcal/mole; typical residence times of 0.1-15 secs. and linear bed velocities of 2-200 cm/s. are used. It is used, e.g. for propylene oxidation. The distribution of gas over the catalyst is uniform, and poisoning of the catalyst through side reactions is avoided so that it has a long-life.
