ENTSPRECHENDES KRAFTFAHRZEUGCORRESPONDING MOTOR VEHICLE
The present invention relates to a protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant, in particular an inflatable cushion which is inflated along a side door window etc. in the event of a side impact or a side rollover, that is to say a rollover about the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, or the like. In particular, the present invention relates to such a protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant, in which gas is supplied from a gas supply inlet to a main gas connection or a main gas channel in order to be distributed therefrom to a plurality of small chambers. The present invention also relates to a protective device for the head of a vehicle occupant with such a protective cushion and to a motor vehicle with such a protective device.
Such a generic protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant is disclosed in WO 096/26087 and is shown in particular in Figures 1 and 9 of this publication. The interior of this known cushion comprises a line section (main gas connection) which extends along the upper edge of the cushion from a cushion end located in the front of a motor vehicle (the front end) to the cushion end located in the rear of the motor vehicle (the rear end), as well as numerous cell sections (chambers) which are connected to the line section in such a way that they extend downwards.
• · · ♦·* —• · · ♦·* —
In the cushion disclosed in WO 096/26087, gas enters the interior of the conduit section from the conduit section at the rear of the motor vehicle to inflate the cell sections one after the other starting from the rear of the motor vehicle, so that the cell sections located at the front are inflated significantly later than the cell sections located at the rear.
The present invention is therefore based on the object of providing a protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant, which can be inflated as a whole very quickly with only a small time difference between the inflation of the individual parts of the cushion, as well as a protective device equipped with such a cushion and a motor vehicle equipped with such a cushion.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a protective cushion with the features of claim 1 or a protective device with the features of claim 7 and a motor vehicle with the features of claim 8. The subclaims each define preferred and advantageous embodiments of the present invention.
The protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant according to the invention, which is arranged near the edge where a ceiling section and a side surface of the cabin or interior of a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, intersect, and which is inflatable downwards along the side surface by supplying gas from a gas supply inlet, comprises a side section arranged along a pillar of the motor vehicle, a top section arranged along the ceiling section, a main gas connection arranged inside the cushion and connected to the gas supply inlet and several in-
nerhalb des Kissens angeordnete kleine Kammern, welchen jeweils Gas von der Hauptgasverbindung zugeführt wird, wobei der Gaszuführeinlaß im unteren Abschnitt des seitlichen Abschnitts angeordnet ist und sich die Hauptgasverbindung von dem unteren Abschnitt des seitlichen Abschnitts diagonal zu dem Oberseitenabschnitt hin erstreckt.small chambers arranged within the cushion, each of which is supplied with gas from the main gas connection, the gas supply inlet being arranged in the lower portion of the side portion and the main gas connection extending diagonally from the lower portion of the side portion to the top portion.
In such a protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant, when gas is supplied from the gas supply inlet to the main gas joint, the main gas joint is first inflated by the gas. With the inflation of the main gas joint, the main gas joint of the cushion expands in a rod-like manner from the lower portion of a pillar of the vehicle, such as an α-pillar, diagonally toward the upper portion like a shaft inserted into a sail. At this time, most of the cushion is spread out like a curtain along a side door, etc. Then, the gas is supplied from the main gas joint to each small chamber to inflate each small chamber. Since the cushion itself is already expanded, the inflation of the small chambers merely increases the thickness of each small chamber. That is, the gas supplied to the small chambers hardly expands the folded cushion, so that the supply resistance acting on the gas is small.
Each small chamber is therefore inflated extremely gently and evenly, so that the entire cushion is completely inflated in a relatively short period of time.
According to the invention, the main gas connection is preferably designed to be linear. According to the invention, the gas supply inlet is preferably arranged in the lower section of the front section of the cushion along an A-pillar.
According to the invention, the cushion can have a C-pillar
arranged rear section. In this case, the main gas connection preferably extends from
the lower section of the front section into the
Near the edge where the top section
and cut the back section.
According to the invention, the small chambers are located both on the top
as well as at the bottom of the main gas connection.
The protective device according to the invention for the head of a

Figure 6 shows a side view of the interior of a motor vehicle with a built-in cushion.
The protective cushion 1 according to the first embodiment is formed by superimposing a cabin or passenger compartment side layer 2 and a window side layer 3 and connecting them linearly to each other so that a main gas connection 7 and small chambers 8a to 8k are formed between the two layers 2 and 3. Reference numeral 4 designates a protruding part provided for fastening the cushion 1 to a roof side part 32 and an α-pillar of a motor vehicle, while reference numeral 5 designates a through hole for a locking attachment, for example for a rivet formed in the protruding part 4. Reference numerals 33, 34, 35 and 36 designate a C-pillar, a B-pillar, a front door and a rear door, respectively.
The main gas connection 7 extends along the α-pillar from the lower end of a front or front side section IF to the rear end of a top side section IU and is provided at the front end with a gas supply inlet 6 to be connected to an inflator 30.
The layers 2 and 3 are connected to one another by a linear connecting section 9, a pair of parallel and diagonal linear connecting sections 10 and 11 and vertical linear connecting sections 40 to 49. The connection can be brought about in any manner, in particular by sewing, gluing or welding.
-&dgr;--δ-
The diagonal linear connecting portions 10 and 11 serve to form the main gas connection 7. The linear connecting portion 10 extends from the lower portion of the front side portion IF of the cushion 1 to the rear end of the top side portion IU, while the linear connecting portion 11 extends from the front end of a bottom side portion IB of the cushion 1 to the upper end of a rear side portion IR. The diagonal linear connecting portions 10 and 11 are provided with gas inlets 12 for introducing gas from the main gas connection into the small chambers 8a to 9k.
The vertical linear connecting portions 40 to 43 extend upward from the diagonal linear connecting portion 10 to a peripheral linear connecting portion 9. The vertical linear connecting portions 44 to 48 extend downward from the diagonal linear connecting portion 11 to the peripheral linear connecting portion 9. The vertical linear connecting portion 49 extends vertically within the small chamber 8k. The vertical linear connecting portion 49 serves to prevent excessive inflation or bloating of the small chamber 8k in the thickness or width direction.
The front part of the cushion 1 is installed in the motor vehicle in the folded state along the A-pillar 31 of the motor vehicle, while the middle and rear parts are installed in the motor vehicle in the folded state along a roof-side rail 32.
The folded cushion 1 is covered by a cover (not shown). The cover is designed in such a way that it tears when the cushion 1 is inflated or expanded.
In the event of a side impact or side rollover of the motor vehicle, the inflator 30 is actuated to supply gas from the gas supply inlet 6 to the main gas line 7, which gas in turn flows into each of the small chambers 8a to 8k to inflate them.
Since the gas coming from the gas supply inlet β first inflates the main gas pipe 7 in the form of a linear shaft or rod, the cushion 1 is expanded in a curtain-like manner along the upper parts of the doors 35 and 36. Then, the small chambers 8a to 8k are inflated to increase the thickness of the cushion 1. In this way, since gas is supplied to each of the small chambers 8a to 8k substantially simultaneously after the cushion 1 is expanded, both the front and rear sides of the cushion 1 are inflated substantially simultaneously. Each of the small chambers 8a to 8k is inflated extremely rapidly since gas is introduced after the cushion 1 is expanded in a curtain-like manner.
Figure 5 shows a plan view of a protective cushion I 1 according to a second embodiment, the structure of the same part as in Figure 4 being shown.
In Figure 5, vertical linear connecting sections 40' to 43' extend from the linear connecting section 10 diagonally to the front section, while vertical linear connecting sections 44' to 48' extend from the linear connecting section 11 diagonally to the lower section. Furthermore, the vertical linear connecting section 49 is not provided in Figure 5.
Die äußere Struktur des in Figur 5 gezeigten Kissens 1' entspricht der Struktur des in den Figuren 1 bis 4 gezeigtenThe external structure of the cushion 1' shown in Figure 5 corresponds to the structure of the cushion shown in Figures 1 to 4.
Cushion 1, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding sections. The cushion 1' can also be inflated extremely quickly, like the cushion 1 shown in Figures 1 to 4.
In the above-mentioned embodiments, the rear side portion IR is arranged along the C-pillar. However, the rear side portion IR may also be arranged along the B-pillar or along a D-pillar.
Furthermore, the gas supply inlet and the inflation device can also be arranged according to the invention in the rear region of the motor vehicle, for example in the C-pillar, so that the main gas connection extends from the lower end of the back of the cushion to the front end of the top of the cushion or to the upper end of the front of the cushion.
As described above, the protective cushion for the head of a vehicle occupant according to the invention can be inflated more quickly than a conventional protective cushion. Therefore, an inflator of smaller capacity can be used.
