In the paint industry, liquid cycloaliphatic epoxy resins which are liquid at room temperature, predominantly for qualitative, economic and technical reasons, as well as industrial hygiene aspects 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3 ', 4', epoxy-cyclohexane-carboxylate (ECC), for the production of cationically UV-curable As used in, for example, Chemistry & Technology of UV & EB Formulation for Coatings, Inks & Paints, Volume 5, Specialty Finishes, edited by PK Oldring, published by SITA Technology, London 1994.
The use of the modified cyclic aliphatic epoxy resins according to the invention, in particular of (A), has the advantage over the known prior art in the preparation of cationic and free-radically radiation-curable coating compositions that by the chemically incorporated half-ester according to claims 1 and 2 with at least an olefinically unsaturated double bond, a higher crosslink density and / or improved elasticity and adhesion can be effected.
As a result, it is generally possible to dispense with additives customary for flexibilization, for example caprolactone polyols, epoxidized polybutadiene.
If the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins (A) or (B) prepared according to the invention contain sufficiently hydrophilic groups, for example by using semiesters (III) or (V) with (ii) polyoxyalkylene units in their structure, water-dilutable or water-dispersible UV pigments may also be present. hardenable coating compositions are produced.
Modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins (B) prepared according to the invention can also be used to prepare UV-curable powder coatings.
In paint compatibility with other binders, such as acrylic copolymers, hydroxyl- and / or carboxylgruppenhaltigen polyesters, Poylesterurethanharzen, polyurethane dispersions, epoxy resins, the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins according to the invention can also be combined with these binders and against these in a significantly lower amount, for example 10 wt .-%, based on total binder, for rounding off or improving these binders, for example, in terms of hardness, elasticity, water resistance and / or chemical resistance resulting coatings (coatings), be included in the coating compositions.
Lacktechnische compatibility tests of different or different binders are simple routine for the expert, so that explanations can be waived.
As a result, fluorine and / or silicon or silicon can be "introduced" into the overall binder in a particularly simple manner.
When using the inventively prepared modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins (A) or (B), preferably (B), for the preparation of fatty acid-modified epoxy resins or epoxy esters or for modifying polyesters, preferably unsaturated polyesters, are in the epoxy resin or polyester practically unsaturated double bonds " introduced ", which leads to improved drying and / or curing.
Very particular preference is given to per se known unsaturated polyesters, preferably having an acid number of 20 to 60, modified modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins prepared according to the invention, very particularly preferably fluorine and / or silicon and / or at least two olefinically unsaturated double bonds.
The unsaturated double bonds can be linked to one another by ester bonds as well as by one or more methylene groups and / or alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylaryl, aryl or aralkyl.
Preferably modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins having 1.1 to 1.5 epoxide groups per average molecular weight produced by the process according to the invention are used for the production of polyesters modified according to the invention.
In the reaction of per se known carboxyl-containing acrylic copolymers, preferably having an acid number of 20 to 50, and inventively prepared modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins having a fluorine and / or silicon content, preferably with 1.1 to 1.5 epoxide groups per average molecular weight, is of particular Advantage that in a particularly simple manner fluorine and / or silicon-containing groups, in particular trifluoromethyl and / or perfluoroalkyl groups and / or silicon-organic groups, "attach" to the above acrylic copolymers, so that optionally on the Use of unsaturated fluorine or silicon-containing acrylic monomers of the prior art, for example 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, or corresponding unsaturated vinyl monomers, for example vinyltriethoxysilane, or, for example, perfluoroalkylethyl methacrylates, completely or partially, preferably completely, can be dispensed with.
The reactions of carboxyl-containing acrylic copolymers with the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins prepared according to the invention can be carried out analogously to the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins prepared according to the invention and containing carboxyl-containing polyesters with fluorine and / or silicon.
When using the inventively prepared modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins, preferably according to claims 2 to 12 and having a melting point below 100 ° C, epoxide groups and hydroxyl-containing acrylic copolymers having more than one epoxy group per average molecular weight can be prepared, which are suitable for the preparation of powder coatings.
Epoxidgruppenhaltige Acrylcopolymerisate, die zur Herstellung von Pulverlacken geeignet sind, gehören zum Stand der Technik und sind umfangreich in der Literatur, vor allem der Patentliteratur, beispielsweise David A. Bate BSc (Hons), The Science of Powder Coatings, Chemistry, Formulation and Application, Volume 1, published by SITA Technology, London 1990;
The particular advantage of using the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins according to the invention as described above and very particularly preferably with a fluorine and / or silicon content, is that optionally on the use of glycidyl methacrylate and / or fluorine-containing vinyl or Acylmonomeren and / or silicon-containing acrylic or vinyl monomers wholly or in part, preferably completely, can be omitted and the preparation of the above acrylic copolymers by using the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins prepared according to the invention as a graft base for the preparation of the above-described acrylic copolymers, optionally by mass or bulk polymerization in Present or in the lap of the inventively prepared modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins, can be performed.
For example, one skilled in the art for cationic and / or radical cure may use suitable photoinitiators as described in the literature, for example, Chemistry & Technology of U & EB Formulation for Coatings, Inks & Paints, Volume 3, Photoinitiators for Free Radical and Cationic Polymerization by KK Dietliker, edited by PKT Oldring , published by SITA Technology Ltd., London 1991, or Volume 5, Specialty Finishes as noted above, or resort to technical information from manufacturers or suppliers (technical data sheets and safety data sheets).
When using the modified cycloaliphatic epoxy resins prepared according to the invention for the preparation of acrylic and epoxy resin containing acrylic copolymers having more than one epoxide group per average molecular weight, it may be advantageous to use as curing or curing agent a combination of these preferably carboxyl-containing curing agents, for example carboxyl-containing polyesters and or polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, in combination with crosslinking or hardening agents such as latent NCO-containing polyisocyanates and / or aminoplasts, for example "Powderlink 1174", if secondary hydroxyl groups do not remain for adhesion support but should be reduced or eliminated, especially at low stoving temperature.
