Also claimed is production of the above electrolyte matrix by incorporating the insulating elements during casting of the electrolyte matrix or by assembling the electrolyte matrix from several layers with interposed insulating elements or with at least one layer consisting of alternating strips of layer material and insulating elements.

Description

The invention relates to an electrolyte matrix for a fuel cell according to the preamble of claim 1.

The invention thus relates to an electrolyte matrix for a fuel cell, in particular a molten carbonate fuel cell, this one on one side of the electrolyte matrix arranged anode and one arranged on the other side of the electrolyte matrix Contains cathode. Flow paths for a fuel gas run along the anode, along the Cathodes lead flow paths for a cathode gas. The flow paths for anode gas and cathode gas are normally produced by bipolar plates, which on the one hand serve as current collectors and electrically contact the electrodes and on the other hand create a space for the electrodes over which the gases on the electrodes to be led past.

The corresponding facts are shown for example in DE 44 10 711 C1 that namely fuel cells made of an electrolyte matrix with arranged on both sides Electrodes exist, a flow path for fuel gas and. Along the anodes a flow path for cathode gas is provided along the cathodes.

It is known from EP 0 240 662 A2 that at Molten carbonate fuel cells the cathode material goes into solution in the Electrolyte matrix deposits and can cause a short circuit in the cell. To the Counteracting electrode dissolution is proposed in the electrolyte structure Store metal oxide that goes into solution and becomes saturated with nickel causes, whereby the electrode resolution is reduced. With another education become metal particles, metal mesh or other porous in the electrolyte structure  Metal structures are provided, which serve as nuclei on which the dissolving Electrode metal is deposited, so that the further migration through the Electrolyte matrix is avoided.

In der DE 33 35 241 C2 ist aufgezeigt, daß die Elektrolytmatrix für Schmelzkarbonatbrennstoffzellen durch Gießen herzustellen ist.DE 33 35 241 C2 shows that the electrolyte matrix for Molten carbonate fuel cells can be produced by casting.

In molten carbonate fuel cells, the electrolyte matrix consists of one in one fine-pored matrix fixed melt electrolyte, which is a binary or a ternary Contains melt of lithium carbonate, potassium carbonate and / or sodium carbonate. The Conventionally, the cathode consists of lithiated nickel oxide, which is under Interaction of the melt electrolyte and the cathode gas atmosphere is solved and gets into the electrolyte matrix. In this it can be caused by hydrogen, which in the Fuel gas is contained and from the anode side to the center of the electrolyte matrix diffused, chemically reduced. The metallic nickel forms nickel grains in the Matrix, which in its position corresponds to the concentration curve of the hydrogen in the Correspond to the electrolyte matrix. Because near the anode gas inlet High hydrogen concentration and thus its penetration depth into the matrix is high, the nickel grains are deposited here preferably in the vicinity of the cathode surface. On the other hand, the hydrogen concentration is near the anode gas outlet comparatively small, so that the penetration depth of the hydrogen into the Electrolyte matrix  reduced and thus the nickel grains are deposited near the anode surface. Between these two extreme positions at the anode gas inlet and at the anode gas outlet an essentially diagonal accumulation of deposited nickel grains, which thus runs like a ribbon through the electrolyte matrix. If the number and size of the nickel grains has grown sufficiently, it can become one direct contact between them come so that it is also about the band of nickel grains direct contact of the anode and cathode and thus a short circuit of the cell.

The object of the invention is an electrolyte matrix for a fuel cell, in particular one Specify molten carbonate fuel cell, which is protected against a short circuit.

This object is achieved by an electrolyte matrix with the features specified in claim 1 solved.

According to the invention, an electrolyte matrix for a fuel cell, which is one on a Anode arranged on one side of the electrolyte matrix and one on the other side of the electrolyte matrix arranged cathode and a flow path leading along the anode for a fuel gas and has a flow path for a cathode gas leading along the cathode, created. According to the invention, it is provided that the electrolyte matrix has at least one in The direction of the thickness of the electrolyte matrix is extensive and essentially transverse to the Contains flow path of the fuel gas extending, electrically insulating element.

Through this extended and essentially transverse in the direction of the thickness of the electrolyte matrix the insulating element extending to the flow path of the fuel gas becomes corresponding the hydrogen concentration in the electrolyte matrix gradually forming band of nickel grains interrupted electrically insulating, so that even with a direct contact between the individual nickel grains cannot short-circuit the anode and cathode. An advantage The invention is that the isolating element or elements of the electrolyte matrix in a simple manner Way and can be provided with little effort, so that the cost of Fuel cells do not grow significantly as a result, while on the other hand reliability and life span of the fuel cell increase significantly.

According to a development of the invention, it is provided that the electrolyte matrix has several Contains insulating elements that are distributed over the surface of the electrolyte matrix from each other are arranged at a distance. Such an arrangement of Insulating elements are chosen so that the gradually forming band of nickel grains interrupted in several places.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the insulating elements are essentially arranged parallel to each other over the surface of the electrolyte matrix.

Advantageously, the insulating element or elements run essentially over the whole Width of the electrolyte matrix.

The insulating elements advantageously run transversely to the flow path of the fuel gas.

Alternatively, it can be provided that the insulating elements are inclined to the flow path of the fuel gas.

The insulating elements can also be arranged in a wave shape or in a zigzag shape. This can be advantageous in terms of the strength of the electrolyte matrix.

According to an advantageous development of the invention, the insulating elements are in shape a grid or a network that crisscross the surface of the Electrolyte matrix runs. This enables a high protection against the emergence of a Short circuit and gives the electrolyte matrix additional strength.

The grid of the insulating elements can be rectangular or oblique.

It is advantageously provided that the expansion of the insulating elements in the direction the thickness of the electrolyte matrix is smaller than this thickness.

According to a development, the insulating elements in the direction of the thickness of the Electrolyte matrix have a varying extent. This can be beneficial in terms of a closer connection of the insulating elements with the material of the electrolyte matrix and the Increase the strength of the electrolyte matrix.

The insulating elements are advantageously embedded in the material of the electrolyte matrix. This can be done in that the electrolyte matrix is formed by several layers, and that the insulating elements on their top and bottom with at least one Layer of matrix material are covered. Alternatively, the electrolyte matrix can be cast from a Matrix material may be formed, wherein the insulating elements are poured into the matrix material are.

The insulating elements can consist of a ceramic material.

It is particularly advantageous to make the insulating elements from a solid oxide or Form material with an oxidized surface or from a metal or an alloy, which in easily oxidized the fuel cell atmosphere. The insulating elements can also be made from one Material exist that forms solid oxides together with components of the electrolyte material.

It is particularly advantageous to manufacture the insulating elements from aluminum. This oxidizes to alumina during operation of the fuel cell at high temperatures forms a massive insulating layer.

Alternatively, the insulating elements can be made of cerium, magnesium or zirconium. These elements also have the advantage that they operate under the operating conditions in the Oxidize the fuel cell slightly and thus form a reliably insulating layer.

Furthermore, all materials, metals and Alloys are used, which oxides or stable mixed oxides of the material or of the material and electrolyte components, are insulating and have a high chemical and have mechanical stability.

The cross section of the insulating elements can be round or triangular, rectangular and polygonal.

According to the invention it is provided in a method for producing the electrolyte matrix that the electrolyte matrix is cast from a matrix material, and that the insulating elements be poured into the matrix material.

According to an alternative method, the electrolyte matrix is provided according to the invention to build up from several layers of a matrix material and the insulating elements between the layers.

Alternatively, the electrolyte matrix can be constructed from several layers of a matrix material, at least one of the layers alternating in strips with the insulating elements is arranged. It is advantageous above and / or below the arrangement of Strips of matrix material and insulating elements continuous layers of matrix material to arrange.

Es zeigen:Exemplary embodiments of the invention are explained below with reference to the drawing. It demonstrate:

In the fuel cell shown in a perspective view in FIG. 1, reference numeral 3 denotes the electrolyte matrix of the fuel cell, which consists of a molten carbonate electrolyte which is fixed in a porous matrix. The melt electrolyte consists for example of a eutectic mixture of lithium and potassium carbonate or lithium and sodium carbonate or lithium, potassium and sodium carbonate. The electrolyte matrix 3 is arranged between an anode 1 and a cathode 2 , between which the fuel cell reaction takes place. The anode 1 typically consists of nickel, the cathode 2 typically consists of lithiated nickel oxide. Bipolar plates 4 and 5 are arranged on the anode 1 and on the cathode 2 , which have the task of making electrical contact with electrodes 1 and 2 on the one hand and separating the anode and cathode of two adjacent fuel cells from one another and flow cross sections for one at the anode 1 to create fuel gas B to be passed and a cathode gas K to be passed by the cathode 2 . To this extent, this is the typical structure of a known molten carbonate fuel cell.

During the operation of the molten carbonate fuel cell, nickel oxide gradually releases from the cathode 2 , which reaches the electrolyte matrix 3 . There it can be reduced in a chemical reaction by hydrogen, which is contained in the fuel gas or anode gas B and diffuses from the anode 1 into the electrolyte matrix 3 . Accordingly, the concentration curve of hydrogen in the electrolyte matrix 3 gradually a collection of grains 6 made of metallic nickel in the electrolyte matrix 3, which like a band in the course of the hydrogen concentration follows in the electrolyte matrix 3 forms. Since the hydrogen concentration and therefore also the depth of penetration into the electrolyte matrix is high in the vicinity of the inlet of the anode gas, the nickel grains 6 are preferably deposited near the anode gas inlet near the cathode surface, as can be seen on the left-hand side of FIG. 2. On the other hand, the hydrogen concentration on the anode gas outlet side is comparatively low, so that the depth of penetration of the hydrogen into the electrolyte matrix is smaller, and thus the nickel grains 6 are deposited near the anode surface, as can be seen on the right-hand side of FIG. 2. Between these two extreme positions at the anode gas inlet and at the anode gas outlet, a band of deposited nickel grains runs approximately diagonally through the matrix. The representation of this band of nickel grains is of course highly idealized in FIG. 2, in reality the nickel grains are distributed much less discretely. If the number of nickel grains in the strip has increased sufficiently after a certain operating time, there can be direct contact between them and then also contact with anode 1 and cathode 2 , so that the fuel cell is short-circuited.

Die isolierenden Elemente 7 verlaufen im wesentlichen über die ganze Breite der Elektrolytmatrix 3 quer zum Weg des Brenngases B. Fig. 3 shows a schematic and simplified illustration of the cross section through an electrolyte matrix according to an embodiment of the invention. The electrolyte matrix 3 contains three insulating elements 7 which are extended in the direction of the thickness of the electrolyte matrix and extend transversely to the flow path of the fuel gas B and are arranged parallel to one another. The insulating elements 7 have a rectangular cross section and are arranged in the electrolyte matrix 3 in such a way that they each interrupt the band that forms over time due to the deposition of nickel grains 6 , so that no short circuit from the anode to the cathode can arise through this band . In contrast to the illustration in FIG. 3, the insulating elements 7 typically have an extent in the direction of the thickness of the electrolyte matrix of less than one millimeter, since the thickness of the electrolyte matrix 3 itself is typically less than or at most equal to one millimeter. The insulating elements 7 run essentially over the entire width of the electrolyte matrix 3 transverse to the path of the fuel gas B.

FIG. 4a) to f) are a plan view of an electrolyte matrix, the arrangement and distribution of the insulating members 7 according to some embodiments of the invention.

FIG. 4a) shows the case of three insulating members 7, which are parallel to each other and arranged transversely to the flow path of the fuel gas B are, according to the arrangement shown in Fig. 3. As shown in FIG. 4b), the insulating elements 7 can also be arranged at an angle to the flow path of the fuel gas B. FIG. 4c) and 4d) show an array of wavy or zigzag-shaped insulating elements 7, which are arranged in its main extension direction in turn across the flow path of the fuel gas B. In the exemplary embodiments shown in FIGS. 4e) and 4f), the insulating elements 7 are designed in the form of a grid or a network, which run crisscross over the surface of the electrolyte matrix 3 . In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 4e), the grating of the insulating elements 7 is rectangular, the one insulating element 7 running transversely to the flow path of the fuel gas B, the other insulating element 7, however, parallel to it. In contrast, in the embodiment of FIG. 4f), the grating of the insulating elements 7 is oblique, so that both the cross and the transverse insulating elements 7 are each arranged obliquely to the flow path of the fuel gas B. Compared to the representation of FIGS. 4e) and 4f), it may also be advantageous to make the size of the mesh of the grid or the network of insulating elements 7 smaller.

The Fig. 5a) to 5d) show partial cross-sections through the electrolyte matrix 3 to illustrate the manner in which the insulating elements are embedded in the electrolyte matrix 3 7. In all of the illustrated exemplary embodiments, the expansion of the insulating elements 7 in the direction of the thickness of the electrolyte matrix 3 is smaller than the thickness mentioned. In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 5 a), the electrolyte matrix 3 is cast from a matrix material and the insulating elements 7 have also been cast into the matrix material. In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 5b), the electrolyte matrix 3 has been joined together from two layers, the insulating elements 7 being inserted between the two layers and being embedded in the electrolyte matrix material by pressing the two layers together. In the embodiment of FIG. 5c) 3 is the electrolyte matrix from a total of four layers of electrolyte material d 3 a to 3. In the production of the electrolyte matrix, the insulating elements 7 are inserted between the two layers 3 a and 3 b and embedded in them by pressing them together. Then layers 3 c and 3 d are arranged above and below the sandwich of layers 3 a and 3 b and joined to layers 3 a and 3 b by pressing them. FIG. 5d) shows an arrangement of three layers of electrolyte material 3 a, 3 b, 3 c. Layer 3 a consists of several individual strips which have been arranged alternately with insulating elements 7 . Above and below this arrangement of alternating strips of the electrolyte matrix material layer 3a and the insulating members 7 were respectively continuous layers 3 b and 3 c arranged from matrix material and press-bonded to the layer 3 a.

In contrast to the illustration in FIG. 5, the insulating elements 7 can also have a cross section deviating from the rectangular shape, for example a round, triangular, rectangular or polygonal cross section.

In principle, any material that is insulating, sufficiently heat-resistant and chemically and mechanically stable is suitable as the material for the insulating elements 7 . In principle, ceramic material can be used. Because of the brittleness of ceramics, however, materials with a higher breaking strength are particularly advantageous. Solid oxides or materials with an oxidized surface or metals or alloys which oxidize easily in the fuel cell atmosphere are particularly suitable. The oxides form a highly resistant and electrically insulating layer. Materials which form solid oxides together with constituents of the electrolyte material are also particularly suitable.

The insulating elements 7 are preferably made of aluminum. Aluminum oxidizes during operation of the fuel cells at high temperatures to aluminum oxide, which forms massive insulating layers. The insulating elements 7 can thus be produced in a simple manner from aluminum wire or a fabric made from aluminum wire.

Alternatively, other slightly oxidizing materials are also suitable, which are in the form of wires or have other geometric shapes or nets manufactured, for example cerium, Magnesium or zirconium.

It is also possible to use other materials to produce the insulating elements 7 , provided that they are electrically insulating, have sufficient mechanical strength and are chemically stable and heat-resistant.
