Description
The invention relates to a method for two-stage galvanic tinning of sheet steel in acidic baths, each layer being melted.
Electroplating of sheet steel can be carried out using either an alkaline or an acidic electrolyte. The alkaline production processes known for a long time have the disadvantage that they require considerably more time than acidic tinning processes. Commercially available galvanic tinning systems today therefore largely work with acidic electrolytes, preferably with halogen salts. In the case of halogen-containing tin-plating baths, a relatively high chloride concentration is generally used in order to achieve the highest possible conductivity. Admitted fluorides largely fulfill the function of a complex in stabilizing the tin. A sodium-stannofluor complex salt is formed, namely Na 1 SnF 6 , as is described in the book "Modem Electroplating" by FA L owe η heim, John Wiley & Sons, New York 1963, pp. 374 to 387.
In the earlier German patent 1 259 667, it is proposed to tin-plate a steel strip first of all to galvanically apply a tin layer with a layer weight of 1.1 to 3.3 g / m 2 to the steel strip and then to apply the steel strip to a temperature in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to heat from 540 to 705 0 C and then, after previous cooling, apply the remaining tin by electroplating and melt it, whereupon the tin-plated steel strip is quenched. Compared to known one-step methods, an improved corrosion resistance is achieved, namely ATC values of less than about 0.09 μΑ / cm 2 , these values in a known manner by means of a galvanic chain consisting of a pure tin electrode and the test piece to be examined Grapefruit juice is measured.
The object of the invention is to create a method of the type mentioned at the outset, in which an improved Corrosion resistance of the tinned steel sheet is achieved.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the first layer is at a temperature of 254 to 454 ° C is melted.
Investigations have shown that in the reliquefaction provided according to the invention Pre-electroplating layer an iron-tin alloy layer is created, which has a flat, plate-shaped crystal structure shows, which also after application of the further tinning layer and subsequent renewed Heating remains essentially unchanged.
In one embodiment of the invention, the steel strip is galvanically cleaned, brushed and rinsed with water using conventional methods. The strip cleaned in this way is lightly pickled in a bath of 5% sulfuric acid, brushed again and rinsed again with water. The strip is then passed through a galvanic tin-plating bath containing halogen and thereby receives a thin deposit of tin in the order of magnitude between 0.45 and 2.25 g / cm 2 . The strip tinned in this way is rinsed in water, dried in a stream of warm air and then quickly heated to a temperature of at least 254 ° C. A quenching process then takes place quickly. The tin-plated strip is again electrolytically cleaned, rinsed in water and immersed a second time in a halogen-containing galvanic bath in order to bring the total tin weight to the desired value. It is then rinsed again, dried, melted and quenched a second time, a pale tin coating being produced by the second melting process and quenching.

In Fig. 4, the ATC values were extraordinarily good, as can be seen from the measurement data used for the melting temperature of 418 ° C. for one of Table I, which shows the results for a layer weight of 0.63 g / m 2 . The linear magnification comprises six test series. Each row refers to the Photographic's tion is 5750. The iron-tin alloy on four steel sheets, each sheet of which with a tion 3 is of relatively flat shape; it was provided with a layer of tin in various thicknesses. However, there are large uncovered areas 4 because corresponding pieces of tinplate of the various materials are not available in sufficient quantities. This applies to series of measurements had the same layer weights. In the to, although the entire layer weight of the alloy in the first series, there was no melting of the tin layer applied by electroplating of the object after the application of the second layer. The ATC values, which are just as large as the layer weight of the alloy, of all test objects of series I were relatively high for those objects which had a considerably stronger one. The first layer was obtained on the test objects of series 2. The data reproduced in series 6, which use a melting temperature of about 288 ° C., confirm this. The ATC values of these test objects are essential determinations.
