Method and apparatus for making connections between ribbon cables The invention relates to printed circuits using ribbon cables and more particularly to a method and ginrichtung for making connections between flexible ribbon cables in a plurality of layers, wherein the clear thermoplastic in each band cable in a Material are embedded.
Sollen solche Verbindungen in mehreren
Lagen
Temperatur, welches genannte schmelzbare
haterial elektrische und
mechanische Eigenschaften besitzt,
Fig.1 eine Draufsicht auf zwei einander kreuzende
Band-
kabel, zwischen deren Leitern eine elektrische Ver-
bindung
eine Verbindung her.
herstellen. To make such connections, some of the top insulation must be removed to expose the conductor for soldering. For this purpose, an improved method has already been disclosed, for which, however, no protection is sought with the present application, with the exception of further method steps and the device which are the subject of the present invention. If such connections are to be made in several layers, difficulties arise when the connection between the ribbon cables is to be made at an overlap point. When the two strips of thermoplastic material are connected to one another using heat and pressure, the solder used to make the soldered connections between the serene faces seeks to flow around the side of the conductors and, as a result of the pressure exerted, wets adjacent conductors. The upper insulation of the adjacent conductor is penetrated by the hot solder without difficulty, so that the insulation no longer fulfills its task. This leads to short circuits and undesirable Wuer connections. The difficulties described above are overcome according to the invention in that an insert is provided between the ribbon cables, which withstands the pressures exerted, so that the solder is no longer forced to flow laterally between the conductors and only wets the surfaces between which one Solder connection is to be made. This insert preferably consists of a porous material which is impregnated with the solder, which then becomes liquid at the lamination temperature. The Nrfindung provides a so-called printed circuit, in which a structural member is arranged between at least two crossing conductors of two crossing ribbon cables, which said member keeps the conductors at a certain distance from each other, which are provided with an insulation with the exception of the to which they are provide with the structural member in contact, which insulation is welded at a predetermined pressure and temperature, wherein the structural member has a melting point which is higher than said temperature, and contains a fusible material, whose melting point is at least as low like the said temperature, which said fusible material has electrical and mechanical properties which are suitable for establishing a connection between said conductors . The invention further provides a printed circuit using ribbon cables, wherein said structural member is composed of a solder-filled sintered bronze insert. The invention will now be described in detail in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 iet a plan view of two intersecting tape cable, an electrical comparison is made connection between the conductors and the Big.2 a cross section along line 2-2 in of Fig. 1. 1 shows the two mutually intersecting ribbon cable 11 and 12. These Baßdkabel as elsewhere As far back reveals several layers produced, though this reasonable, other methods for the purposes of the present invention applies can be. At those points where the current paths are to be connected to each other , these are widened if they are so poor themselves that widening is desired . These widenings 13 and 14 fit together when the conductor strips are arranged in the desired manner. The top of the widened part 13 and the underside of the widened part 14 are exposed and free of the thermoplastic material in which the current paths are embedded. Preferably, a thermoplastic material known as Kel-F, which name is a trademark of the Minnesota kining and Manufacturing Company, is used, the temperature required to bond the tapes 11 and 12 together being so high that the solder used likewise flows and connects the conductors at points 13 and 14 with one another. When the pressure exerted to establish the connection between the strips, the solder used flows laterally between these points and creates a short circuit or connection between other conductors. As can be seen from FIG. 2, these conductors are connected to one another by a connector 15 filled with solder. This connector preferably consists of an inlay of sintered bronze of suitable thickness and establishes a connection between the conductors at the pressure and temperature exerted. When the heat is applied, the solder contained in the bronze inlay begins to melt and, due to the capillary action, flows along the walls of the inlay, the two cheerful parts 13 and 14 being mechanically and electrically connected to one another. Other types of solder inlays can also be used. For example, a thin-walled honeycomb core material can be used which is filled with the solder and withstands the forces exerted during lamination, so that the solder is prevented from flowing sideways. As another embodiment, the invention provides a porous material with suitable strength, on which a thin layer of solder is applied, so that the insert consists of several layers. As it melts, the solder flows through the porous material and comes into contact with the bright ones on opposite sides of the material. These connecting conductors have the feature that their strength is retained, so that they maintain the distance between the conductors to be connected to one another during the pressing together and, in the process, produce a soldered connection between them.
