Beim Zusammenfügen des Hohlniethalses mit dem Nietkäppchen dringt das offene Ende des Käppchens durch das Leder und übergreift danach den Hohlniethals, wobei dessen Boden in einer Erweiterung im oberen Hohlraum des Käppchens eingepreßt und platt gestaucht wird. Bei der Vernietung entstehen zwischen Hohlniethals und der Innenwand des Käppchens Kapillare, durch die Wasser in das Innere des Schuhhakens gelangen kann.
