Unter „out of position"-Fällen werden solche Fälle verstanden, bei denen der durch den Airbag zu schützende Fahrzeuginsasse nicht die normale Sitzposition einnimmt, sondern eine anormale Sitzposition, insbesondere eine solche Sitzposition, bei der der Fahrzeuginsasse sich sehr dicht an dem noch nicht entfalteten Airbag bzw. Gassack befindet und somit mit voller Wucht von dem sich aufblasenden Gassack getroffen wird. Um zu vermeiden, dass es bei solchen „out of position"-Fällen zu ernsthaften Verletzungen des Fahrzeuginsassen kommt, ist bei dem vorbekannten Gassack die Abströmöffnung vorgesehen: diese Abströmöffnung ist beim Aufblasen des Gassackes zunächst noch offen, damit bei einem vorzeitigen Kontakt das Gassacks mit dem Fahrzeuginsassen das Gas aus dem Gassack entweichen kann, wodurch der Aufschlag das Gassacks auf den Fahrzeuginsassen deutlich abgemildert wird.
