Description

The invention relates to a battery cell, in particular a rechargeable lithium-ion cell, comprising a cell housing surrounding the battery cell and a safety valve, which is inserted into an opening of the cell housing and is formed, with a rise of a prevailing within the cell housing internal cell pressure above a threshold open and thus allow leakage of a medium from the cell housing.

Stand der TechnikState of the art

Input called battery cells are used in many ways as energy storage. In particular, such battery cells are used in battery systems, which have a plurality of such battery cells, which are electrically interconnected to one or more battery modules. Such battery systems are used in particular for providing the energy required for the operation of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles. Particular preference is given to using lithium-ion cells as battery cells. Prismatic battery cells with a solid metallic housing (referred to in technical and technical terms as a so-called hardcase) are frequently used. The metallic cell housing protects the battery cells in particular against the ingress of moisture.

If such a battery cell rises above a certain temperature, so-called degassing of the battery cell may occur. Disturbances, such as a short circuit between the electrodes of the battery cell, overcharging of the battery cell during a charging process or an extremely high ambient temperature, can lead to such a critical heating of the battery cell. As a result of such a critical heating can use unwanted chemical reactions in the battery cell, which can lead to a so-called thermal runaway (English: "thermal runaway"). In particular, an electrolyte required for ion transport between the electrodes of a battery cell can decompose as a result of the critical heating and pass into a vapor or gaseous state. Due to this formation of gas, a high pressure within the battery cell arises in a short time. A safety valve inserted into the cell housing prevents the battery cell from bursting because the safety valve opens when a certain internal cell pressure is exceeded, so that a gas formed inside the battery cell and any further decomposition products formed as fluid can escape from the cell housing via the open safety valve. A lithium-ion cell with such a safety valve is for example from the document DE 103 28 862 B4 known, wherein the safety valve is designed as a metallic bursting membrane. Such a bursting membrane can be designed, for example, such that it bursts when the internal cell pressure prevailing inside the cell housing rises by about 6 bar.

A disadvantage of previously known battery cells is that after opening the safety valve, the battery cell components in the interior of the cell housing of the battery cell, in particular the electrolyte of the battery cell, come into contact with the ambient air and in particular with the moisture contained in the ambient air, whereby the chemical reactions in the interior the cell housing, which have led to an opening of the safety valve, be driven further and further gas and / or vapors are formed. In particular, hydrogen gas (H 2 ) may form due to the contact of the electrolyte with the ambient humidity, which may ignite due to the high battery cell temperature due to thermal runaway of the battery cell of sometimes more than 200 ° Celsius. In addition, hydrogen can also be formed by decomposition at high temperatures. Due to the opened safety valve, occasionally ignited gas can escape from the cell housing of the battery cell and cause further damage, in particular to other battery cells or other components of the battery system.

Materials that can act as a flame arrester and thereby allow gas to pass through are known in the art. A material acting as a flame arrester, for example, from the website http://www.porex.com/de/product/automotive (As of 11 October 2013) known. There is disclosed to use a porous polytetrafluoroethylene material (POREX ® Porous PTFE Materials) in ventilation components for battery cases of starter batteries for motor vehicles.

Against this background, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved battery cell, which is protected from bursting due to a rise in the cell housing prevailing internal cell pressure by a safety valve, which advantageously prevents the ingress of moisture into the cell housing when opening the safety valve is.

Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention

To achieve the object, a battery cell, in particular a rechargeable lithium-ion cell or lithium cell, comprising a cell housing surrounding the battery cell and a Safety valve, which is inserted into an opening of the cell housing and is adapted to open at a rise of a prevailing within the cell housing internal cell pressure above a threshold addition, in particular defined open, and thus to allow leakage of a medium from the cell housing, proposed the battery cell further comprises a semi-permeable and / or unidirectionally permeable closure element which closes the opening in addition to the safety valve, wherein the closure element is designed to allow a gaseous medium flowing out of the cell housing to pass. The closure element is preferably either semi-permeable or unidirectionally permeable or semi-permeable with respect to a first group of substances and unidirectionally permeable with respect to a second group of substances, such that gas released in a cell degassing, such as CO 2 , through the closure element can escape from the cell housing of the battery cell and in particular moisture can not pass from the outer environment of the battery cell through the closure element in the interior of the cell housing.

Advantageously, the closure element is designed so that it is not destroyed at a cell internal pressure, which exceeds the predetermined threshold value and thus causes an opening of the safety valve, and further closes the opening of the cell housing. The gas formed within the cell housing of the battery cell or steam formed within the cell housing can advantageously leave the cell housing through the undamaged closure element which further closes the opening. Further decomposition components, which are not gaseous, are advantageously prevented at an exit from the opening of the cell housing by the material of the closure element. In particular, it is provided that the safety valve opens at a threshold value, which is preferably between 5 bar and 7 bar. As the electrolyte or electrolyte component of the battery cell, in particular, an organically based solvent, preferably ethylene carbonate or ethylene methyl carbonate, is provided. The battery cell also preferably has an intercalation electrode.

In particular, it is provided according to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention that the closure element is moisture impermeable. By moisture impermeability of the closure element is advantageously prevented that moisture from the environment outside of the cell housing penetrates through the opening in the cell housing, in particular by the release of the safety valve opening of the cell housing. According to one embodiment variant, it is provided that the closure element is unidirectionally moisture-impermeable, such that penetration of moisture from the environment outside the cell housing through the opening into the cell housing is prevented by the closure element. By virtue of the semipermeable or unidirectionally permeable closure element occluding the opening of the cell housing in addition to the safety valve, advantageously lower demands can be made on the tightness of the safety valve inserted into the opening of the cell housing.

Due to the moisture-impermeable sealing element, it is prevented in particular that, when the battery cell is degassed, moisture penetrates through the opened safety valve into the cell housing of the battery cell. This advantageously prevents the battery components located in the interior of the cell housing, in particular the electrolyte of the battery cell, from coming into contact with moisture, as a result of which further decomposition reactions triggered as a result of moisture contact and leading to the formation of hydrogen fluoride (HF) are prevented.

According to an advantageous further embodiment of the invention it is provided that the closure element is fire-proof. If a gas formed within the cell housing ignites due to a correspondingly high battery cell temperature, the fire-impermeable closure element advantageously prevents flames from hitting the cell housing through the opened safety valve. Preferably, the closure element is also fireproof.

In particular, it is provided that the closure element is moisture-impermeable and / or fire-proof.

According to a further particularly preferred embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention, it is provided that the closure element at least partially comprises a porous metal foam and / or a porous ceramic and / or a porous polymer and / or an inorganic substance having a layer structure. As a porous metal foam in particular a nickel foam is provided. As an inorganic substance with a layer structure, which in particular can absorb vapors and / or particles, vermiculite is provided in particular. In particular, it is provided that the closure element is made of a porous polypropylene (PP), wherein the closure element is preferably formed as a membrane. Preferably the closure element comprises at least partially a POREX ® Porous PTFE material, in particular at least one layer of this material. One such PFTE material (PTFE: polytetrafluoroethylene) is particularly preferred. Advantageously, a closure element which is made of a porous material, such as in particular a porous metal foam and / or a porous ceramic and / or a porous polymer, allows a good escape of gas from the released through the safety valve opening of the cell housing. In addition, such a porous material advantageously constitutes a moisture barrier. Advantageously, toxic decomposition products, such as HF, which are absorbed on the smoke particle surfaces in the case of cell degassing, remain in the porosity or pores of the closure element, whereas gaseous decomposition products, such as CO 2 , can leave the cell housing in the external environment through the porous material of the closure element. In particular, for this reason, as well as due to the impermeability of moisture, the closure element is referred to as semipermeable.

According to a further advantageous embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention, the closure element is a semipermeable membrane or a unidirectionally permeable membrane, preferably a membrane made of a porous polymer material. A closure element designed as a membrane made of a porous polymer material, in particular of a PFTE material, is advantageously flexible and advantageously has a long service life. In addition, such a closure element is advantageously electrically non-conductive, so there is no risk of electrical short circuits. In addition, such a closure element advantageously has a high temperature resistance and chemical resistance.

According to a further preferred embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention it is provided that the safety valve closes the opening to the interior of the cell housing and the closure element closes the opening to the external environment of the cell housing. This means that, viewed from the inside of the cell housing, the safety valve is arranged in front of the closure element.

Preferably, the closure element is arranged on the outside of the cell housing. As a result, the closure element is advantageously better controlled, for example in the context of maintenance. In particular, damage to the closure element, in particular on a closure element designed as a membrane, can be detected by simple visual inspection. In addition, an interchangeability of the closure element is given improved. In particular, a prematurely aged closure element, which has cracks or the like due to material aging, can be easily replaced. In addition, an arrangement of the closure element, in particular an arrangement of a sealing element designed as a membrane, on the outside of the cell housing advantageously can be easily realized. In particular, in the case of a closure element embodied as a membrane, a simple arrangeability is advantageously also provided in the context of retrofitting a battery cell with such a membrane.

According to a further advantageous embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention, it is provided that the closure element, in particular the closure element designed as a membrane, is arranged on the cell housing by means of a heat-sealing method. The heat seal compound can be produced in particular with so-called anisotropically conductive adhesives. By the heat sealing method is advantageously a solid and above all tight connection between the closure element, in particular a membrane as a closure element, and the cell housing produced so that the closure element protects the battery cell in particular from the ingress of moisture from the outer environment of the cell housing through the opening of the cell housing ,

A further advantageous embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention provides that the opening of the cell housing is encompassed by a tubular or shaft-like section, wherein the safety valve and the closure element spaced from each other, the opening are arranged occlusive. As a result, the closure element, in particular a membrane as closure element, advantageously protected against damage by the opening safety valve. To provide a corresponding tubular or shaft-like opening, provision is made in particular for the wall of the cell housing having the opening to have a corresponding material thickness, wherein the opening is formed, for example, by a throughbore and the throughbore comprises the opening as a tube-like section. In order to minimize an increase in weight of the cell housing through the tubular or shaft-like opening, in particular it can also be provided that an attachment is attached to the opening of the cell housing, which forms the corresponding tubular or shaft-like section of the opening. The closure element is preferably arranged at one end of the attachment, the safety valve at the other end of the attachment. In particular, it is provided that the closure element, in particular the closure element formed as a membrane, is arranged by means of a heat-sealing process at one end of the tubular or shaft-like attachment. Advantageously, such an attachment, which is provided with a corresponding membrane, with the other, not closed attachment opening at the opening of the cell housing can be arranged, in particular by welding. The article is advantageously made of a corrosion-resistant material, preferably of stainless steel or aluminum. Advantageously, such an attachment with a semipermeable closure element or unidirectionally permeable closure element can be retrofitted to conventional battery cells.

In order to avoid damage to the closure element, in particular a closure element designed as a membrane when opening the safety valve, according to a variant embodiment of the invention that, viewed from the inside of the cell housing, the closure element is arranged in front of the safety valve.

A further advantageous embodiment of the battery cell according to the invention provides that the cell housing comprises a cell housing cover, in which the opening is arranged. It can be provided in particular that for the aforementioned embodiment of a tubular or shaft-like portion which comprises the opening, the lid has a greater thickness at least in the region of the opening. The opening can be formed in particular by a perforation in the region of greater strength. In particular, it is provided as an advantageous alternative that a correspondingly designed attachment, as explained above, is connected to the cell housing cover.

A further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that the safety valve is a rupture disk, in particular a metallic rupture disk. The rupture disk is in particular designed to open in the event of an increase in internal cell pressure prevailing inside the cell housing beyond a threshold value, in particular if the cell internal pressure within the cell housing rises above a threshold value of 5 bar to 6 bar, and thus outflow of a medium to allow out of the cell case. In particular, it is provided that the rupture disk has at least one predetermined breaking point to improve the bursting behavior.

Dabei zeigt:Further advantageous details, features and design details of the invention are explained in more detail in connection with the exemplary embodiments illustrated in the figures. Showing:

2 in einer schematischen Darstellung eine Draufsicht auf ein weiteres Ausführungsbeispiel einer Batteriezelle, welche erfindungsgemäß mit einer semipermeablen Membran ausgerüstet wird; und 2 in a schematic representation of a plan view of another embodiment of a battery cell, which is equipped according to the invention with a semi-permeable membrane; and

3 in a schematic representation of a greatly enlarged section of an embodiment of an inventive closure element.

In 1 is a prismatic battery cell 1 shown in a plan view. The battery cell 1 may in particular be a rechargeable or rechargeable lithium-ion cell. The battery cell 1 is from a solid cell case 2 , a so-called hardcase surrounded. The cell case 2 is dense and prevents moisture from entering the battery cell 1 , In particular, the cell housing 2 aluminum or stainless steel. As electrolyte or electrolyte component of the battery cell 1 In particular, ethylene carbonate or ethylene methyl carbonate is provided. From the cell case 2 protrude two cell terminals 7 . 8th , which in each case with one of the electrodes of the battery cell 1 electrically conductive is connected. The electrode may in particular be an intercalation electrode, in particular the positive electrode. About the cell terminals 7 . 8th can the battery cell 1 in particular be electrically connected to a battery module with further battery cells.

The battery cell 1 includes a safety valve 3 which is in an opening 4 of the cell housing 2 is used. The safety valve 3 is presently designed as a metallic rupture disk, which at an increase in a within the cell housing 2 prevailing internal cell pressure beyond a threshold and thus opens out a medium from the cell housing 2 over through the safety valve 3 released opening 4 allows. Preferably, the rupture disk 3 designed such that it bursts when exceeding a cell internal pressure of 5 bar and thus the opening 4 of the cell housing 2 releases.

Above the safety valve 3 is on the outside of the cell case 2 a semipermeable membrane as a closure element 5 arranged. From the inside of the cell housing 2 From the perspective, is the safety valve 3 So before the closure element 5 arranged. Therefore, the safety valve 3 in 1 shown in dashed lines. Preferably, the closure element 5 by means of a heat-sealing process on the cell housing 2 arranged. In particular, it is provided that the closure element 5 close to the cell housing 2 is arranged. The closure element 5 is preferably of a porous polymer material which is flame impermeable, moisture impermeable and gas permeable. The passage of gas is in particular through the pores of the material. These are designed so that a passage of moisture is not possible.

The battery cell warms up 1 above a certain temperature, for example due to a short circuit between the electrodes of the battery cell 1 , As a result of the transition into the gaseous state electrolyte, the pressure inside the cell housing increases 2 such that the pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold, for example a predetermined threshold of 5 bar. As a result, the rupture disk breaks 3 and thus gives the opening 4 of the cell housing 2 free. That's the opening 4 in addition to the rupture disk 3 closing closure element 5 leaves it out of the cell case 2 escaping gas, which reduces the pressure inside the cell. The closure element 5 Prevents advantageously that moisture from the external environment of the cell housing 2 into the interior of the cell housing 2 penetrates. In this way, in particular prevents moisture in contact with the electrolyte of the battery cell 1 comes, which would trigger further chemical reactions or would increase the ongoing chemical reaction.

2 shows one of a cell case 2 surrounded battery cell 1 , The cell case 2 has an opening 4 into which a metallic rupture disk 3 with a predetermined breaking point 6 used as a safety valve. By means of a closure element designed as a membrane made of a porous polymer 5 , which is moisture-impermeable and gas-permeable, becomes the battery cell 1 equipped to a battery cell according to the invention. The closure element 5 this is done on the outer cell case 2 the opening 4 arranged sealingly, preferably by means of a heat-sealing method.

3 shows a schematic representation of a strong enlargement of a section of a closure element 5 which is made of a porous material. How out 3 can be seen, the closure element 5 a variety of pores 9 which are ramified such that a gas is the closure element 5 can happen. Moisture can not be beneficial through the pores 9 pass. This is the closure element 5 advantageously semipermeable. Preferably, the closure element 5 In addition, flexible and temperature resistant up to at least 230 ° C. Advantageously, the closure element 5 formed fireproof.

In particular, it is provided that the closure element 5 is made of a porous polymer material and is formed as a membrane. The pores 9 such a closure element designed as a membrane 5 preferably have a size between 1 .mu.m and 50 .mu.m (microns: microns). The material thickness or thickness of the closure element 5 is particularly chosen so that the closure element 5 the pressure surge when opening the safety valve 3 withstand. In particular, the closure element 5 have a material thickness or thickness between 100 microns and 3 mm (mm: millimeters). The gas passage may be in particular up to 13 l / h / cm (liters per hour and centimeter) at a pore size mentioned above, at a pressure of 10 mbar (mbar: millibars).

The illustrated in the figures and explained in connection with these design details are illustrative of the invention and are not limiting for this.
