Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of isononyl derivatives from fermentatively produced isobutene, the higher purity of which improves the process and the properties of the isononyl derivatives produced.

Description

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of isononyl derivatives, in particular isononanol (3,5,5-trimethylhexanol as main component), isononyl vinyl ether (3,5,5-trimethylhexyl-1-vinyl ether as main component), isononanal (3,5, 5-trimethylhexanal as the main component), isononanoic acids (3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid or 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentic acid as main components), the glycidyl ester of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid or 2,2,4, 4-tetramethylpentanoic acid and isononylamine (3,5,5-trimethylhexylamine as main component), preferably from renewable raw material sources.

Such isononyl compounds are important industrial products, especially the isononyl vinyl ethers, i.a. as copolymers for dispersion coatings, isononanol has significance as an alcohol component for plasticizers. Isononanal has due to the reactive aldehyde as an intermediate product of some technical importance and can be converted, for example, by oxidation in isononanoic acid or by reductive amination in isononylamine and in secondary and tertiary amines containing the isononyl. Esters of isononanoic acid are used as lubricants and isononylamines find application in anticorrosive formulations.

Processes for the preparation of isononyl derivatives have been known for some time and, inter alia, in Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 6th. Ed., Wiley-VCH, 2003, Vol. 6, pp. 497-498; 502-503; and Vol. 2, page 33 described. In most cases this is based on the dimer of the isobutene, which is converted into the corresponding isononanal in the presence of transition metal catalysts by means of the oxo reaction or hydroformylation reaction with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, also called synthesis gas ( Hydrocarbon Processing, April 1973, pages 171-173 ; Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 6th. Ed. Wiley-VCH, 2003, Vol. 2, page 75 ). Isononanal is then oxidized, for example, to isononanoic acid, hydrogenated to isononanol, aminated to isononylamine or isononanol reacted to Isononylvinylethern. However, due to the immense importance of such isononyl derivatives in engineering chemistry, there is a constant search for further improvements in alternative processes and alternative sources of raw materials for the production of isononyl derivatives.

The use of renewable raw materials as starting materials for the production of organic chemicals on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly important. On the one hand, the resources based on crude oil, natural gas and coal are to be spared and, on the other, carbon dioxide is bound with renewable raw materials in a technically usable carbon source, which is in principle cost-effective and available in large quantities. Examples of the use of renewable raw materials for the industrial production of organic chemicals include u.a. the production of citric acid, 1,3-propanediol, L-lysine, succinic acid, lactic acid and itaconic acid.

Renewable resources are not used for the production of isononyl derivatives. Thus, the object is to provide an alternative improved process for the preparation of isononyl derivatives, preferably from renewable raw material sources available. It is of particular importance with regard to the use of isononyl derivatives that as isomeric isobutene is preferably used for the production of isononyl derivatives.

  • a) fermentative Herstellung von Isobuten
  • e) ggf. weitere Derivatisierungen
This object is achieved by a process for the preparation of isononyl derivatives, comprising the steps:
  • a) fermentative production of isobutene
  • b) Dimerization of isobutene to diisobutene
  • c) Purification of the diisobutene
  • d) extension by one carbon atom to obtain an isononyl derivative
  • e) possibly further derivatizations

It has surprisingly been found that isobutene produced by fermentation is of such high purity with respect to linear butene isomers that subsequent acid-catalyzed dimerization provides diisobutene in high purity and yield. This in turn means that in step d) the isononyl derivative also arises in high purity.

In the prior art, processes are known in which isobutene is produced biochemically on a laboratory scale in high purity. For example, starting from the direct precursor 3-hydroxyisovalerate (3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyrate), Gogerty, DS and Bobik, TA 2010, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Page 8004-8010 the fermentative-enzymatic synthesis of isobutene, which according to GC no major amounts of n-butene isomers in the desired product were identified.

The term "isononyl derivative" is understood to mean structurally isomeric compounds having at least one C 9 -alkyl radical, in particular a predominant proportion of 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl radical, again in particular 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol and ether, 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl vinyl ether, 3,5,5-trimethylhexanal, 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid and its glycidyl ester and 3,5,5-trimethylhexylamine; and secondary and tertiary amines having at least one 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl radical. In addition, those C9 compounds are also meant, which have the 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentyl skeleton as the predominant proportion.

The by-product carbon dioxide formed in the fermentation and optionally further inerts may optionally be removed in a conventional manner by suitable separation methods. In most embodiments of the invention, the conversion of isobutene to diisobutene can be carried out even without further purification of the isobutene, which is thus a preferred embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment of the invention, the fermentative process according to the invention makes use of the high selectivity to isobutene as the C 4 olefin. On the other hand, carbon dioxide and other inerts do not interfere with the dimerization of isobutene to diisobutene. In special cases, however, it may prove expedient to first separate carbon dioxide and other inerts from the isobutene.

By "fermentative production" of isobutene is meant in particular that isobutene either
  • By means of microorganisms, preferably from renewable raw materials and / or
  • - In a cell-free enzymatic process, also preferably from renewable resources
is won.

In sehr geringen Mengen wird Isobuten jedoch von natürlich vorkommenden Mikroorganismen produziert ( US4698304 ; Fukuda, H. 1984 et al, From Agricultural and Biological Chemistry (1984), 48(6), S. 1679–82 ).

beschreiben.Isobutene is - as far as is known - not a natural product in the sense that it arises in metabolic processes in organisms in such quantities that an industrial use appears appropriate. However, isobutene is produced in very small amounts by naturally occurring microorganisms ( US4698304 ; Fukuda, H. 1984 et al, From Agricultural and Biological Chemistry (1984), 48 (6), pp. 1679-82 ). Thus, in the previously known embodiments of the invention, the fermentative production of isobutene by means of modified, non-natural microorganisms or the correspondingly modified enzymes. Such microorganisms are from the US 2011165644 (A1) known in Example 13, the synthesis of isobutene from glucose in suitable microorganisms is treated. In WO2012052427 and WO2011032934 describe further enzymatic reactions involving the formation of isobutene as a sequence of sequential enzymatic syntheses of
  • I) acetone to 3-hydroxyisovalerate and
  • II) 3-hydroxyisovalerate to isobutene and carbon dioxide
describe.

A. 2010, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Seite 8004–8010 behandelt. The enzymatically catalyzed decomposition of 3-hydroxyisovalerate to isobutene and carbon dioxide is also known in Gogerty, DS and Bobik, TA 2010, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, p. 8004-8010 treated. According to GC, no larger amounts of n-butene isomers were reported in the desired product. Even in aqueous, non-enzymatically catalyzed systems, spontaneous carbon dioxide cleavage from 3-hydroxyisovalerate is observed with the formation of isobutene, which reacts further with the water present in an equilibrium reaction to give tert-butanol ( Pressman, D. and Lucas, HJ 1940, Journal of the American Chemical Society, pages 2069-2081 ).

If this sequence of enzymatic syntheses described in I and II is included in a suitable microbial host organism capable of synthesizing acetone from metabolic precursors or transporting externally supplied acetone via the cell wall into the cell interior via passive or active transport, this can not be achieved -natural microorganism Isobutene can be produced with a fermentative process in good yield. Microorganisms that synthesize acetone from various carbohydrates have long been known and are used, inter alia, in Jones, TD and Woods, DR 1986, Microb. Reviews, pages 484-524 - described. In - Taylor, DG et al 1980, Journal of General Microbiology, 118, pages 159-170 - describe microorganisms that use acetone as the sole carbon source and thus are able to transport acetone through the cell wall into the cell interior.

  • I) Pyruvat zu 2-Acetolactat
  • II) 2-Acetolactat zu 2,3-Dihydroxyisovaleriat
  • III) 2,3-Dihydroxyisovaleriat zu 2-Oxoisovaleriat
  • IV) 2-Oxoisovaleriat zu Isobutyraldehyd
  • V) Isobutyraldehyd zu iso-Butanol und
  • VI) iso-Butanol zu Isobuten
und ist u.a. in der WO2011076689 und WO2011076691 beschrieben.Another possible metabolic pathway is via the reaction sequence:
  • I) pyruvate to 2-acetolactate
  • II) 2-acetolactate to 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate
  • III) 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate to 2-oxoisovalerate
  • IV) 2-oxoisovalerate to isobutyraldehyde
  • V) isobutyraldehyde to iso-butanol and
  • VI) iso-butanol to isobutene
and is among others in the WO2011076689 and WO2011076691 described.

As already described, "diisobutene" is understood to mean 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene, 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene as main components and any desired mixtures of these two compounds.

Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology 3. Auflage 1978, Vol 4, John Wiley & Sons Inc., Seiten 358–360 ).
  • – Aufreinigungs bzw. Hierzu zählen u.a.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is no purification of the isobutene between step a) and b), in particular no purification for the removal of linear butene isomers and optionally of inerts such as carbon dioxide and / or nitrogen. By "purification", the following processes are understood in particular (but not limited to):
  • - Distillation method (which, however, are complicated by the fact that the separation in the overall process of occurring linear butene isomers requires a lot of effort, since the boiling points of the isomers are very close to each other, see. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology 3rd Edition 1978, Vol 4, John Wiley & Sons Inc., pp. 358-360 ).
  • - Purification or separation process in which isobutene is separated due to the increased chemical reactivity by means of a chemical reaction and then converted back into isobutene. These include, inter alia, processes such as reversible proton-catalyzed addition of water to the tertiary butanol or the methanol addition to methyl tertiary-butyl ether (see. EP1489062 ). Isobutene is then recovered from these addition products by cleavage (cf. Weissermel, Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3rd edition, 1988, pp. 74-79 ).
  • - Purification or separation process in which isobutene is due to the more compact molecular structure, by means of suitable physical size exclusion process, for example by means of molecular sieves with a suitable pore size, separated from linear butene isomers (see. WO2012040859 . Weissermel, Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3rd edition, 1988, p.74 ).

Dating Methods, Seite 15–35 – beschrieben. In a further preferred embodiment of the invention, exclusively renewable raw materials are used for the fermentative production of isobutene. If desired, the origin of the carbon atoms may be from renewable resources. through the in ASTM D6866 described test method can be determined. The ratio of the C 14 to C 12 carbon isotopes is determined and compared with the isotope ratio of a reference substance whose carbon atoms come to 100% from renewable raw material sources. This test method is also known in a modified form as the radiocarbon method and is used inter alia in Olsson, IU 1991, Euro Courses: Advanced Scientific Techniques, Volume 1, Issue Sci. Dating Methods, pages 15-35 - described.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the fermentation process is carried out at temperatures of ≥ 20 ° C to ≤ 45 ° C and under atmospheric pressure and releases isobutene as a gaseous product. This embodiment has the advantage that the isobutene thus obtained can be used further immediately or after separation of inerts.

Alternatively, according to an equally preferred embodiment of the invention, the fermentation process is carried out at temperatures of ≥ 20 ° C to ≤ 45 ° C and under pressure between 1 to 30 bar. In this case, isobutene can be obtained as a liquid compound and separated by phase separation directly from the fermentation medium. The separation of inerts can be greatly facilitated in this preferred embodiment.

Hierbei kommen z.B. Schwefelsäure oder saure Ionenaustauscher in Betracht, wie sie u.a. in Weissermel, Arpe, Industrielle Organische Chemie, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3. Auflage, 1988, S. 77 ; Hydrocarbon Processing, April 1973, S. 171–173 beschrieben sind. Alternativ können die in US2004/0054246 , US4100220 (A) , US4447668 (A) und US5877372 (A) beschriebenen Verfahren zum Einsatz kommen.According to a preferred embodiment, step b) is carried out under acid catalysis. In this case, for example, sulfuric acid or acidic ion exchangers come into consideration, as in, inter alia Weissermel, Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3rd edition, 1988, p. 77 ; Hydrocarbon Processing, April 1973, p. 171-173 are described. Alternatively, the in US2004 / 0054246 . US4100220 (A) . US4447668 (A) and US5877372 (A) described methods are used.

The method comprises a further step c), which is carried out according to b):
  • c) purification of the diisobutene, preferably by distillation

Step c) is preferably carried out so that the unreacted volatile components are separated from the diisobutene and the resulting diisobutene is purified by distillation from the optionally formed in small amounts tri-isobutene and higher isobutene oligomers. Tri-isobutene thus obtained and the higher isobutene oligomers thus obtained can likewise be refined to give valuable secondary products.

Step d) is carried out in a preferred embodiment of the present invention by reaction in a hydroformylation reaction / oxo reaction to isononanal. The reaction is discussed further below:
This reaction is preferably carried out in such a way that isononyladehyde is obtained by reacting diisobutene with synthesis gas, preferably using cobalt or rhodium catalysts. Most of these contain predominantly 3,5,5-trimethylhexanal.

According to step e) optionally another derivatization can take place. In the event that isononanal is formed in step d), oxidation or reduction will often occur.

Depending on the application, the reduction of isononanal can take place by means of hydrogenation in the gas or liquid phase on the metal contact. Preferred catalysts are nickel or copper catalysts.

Die Oxidation von Isononanal erfolgt bevorzugt mit Sauerstoff bei mäßig erhöhten Temperaturen und führt zu Isononansäure mit 3,5,5-Trimethylhexansäure als Hauptbestandteil ( Weissermel, Arpe, Industrielle Organische Chemie, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3. Auflage, 1988, S. 143–145 ; Ullmannns Enyclopädie der technischen Chemie, 4. Auflage, 1983, Verlag Chemie, Band 9, Seiten 144 ; EP 1854778 A1 ).The oxidation of isononanal is preferably carried out with oxygen at moderately elevated temperatures and leads to isononanoic acid with 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid as the main constituent ( Weissermel, Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3rd edition, 1988, pp. 143-145 ; Ullmanns Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 4th edition, 1983, Verlag Chemie, Volume 9, pages 144 ; EP 1854778 A1 ).

The reductive amination of isononanal is preferably carried out with ammonia, a primary or a secondary amine with hydrogen, particularly preferably in the presence of a catalyst, for example a nickel or cobalt catalyst. In this case, primary, secondary or tertiary Isononylamine form depending on the ratio of isononanal to the nitrogen-containing compound.

Isononanol can also be converted into the isononylamines by ammonolysis. The reaction preferably also takes place in the presence of hydrogen, preferably on a nickel or cobalt contact, although no hydrogen is consumed in this reaction.

After that, further derivatizations can take place. Particularly preferred is the vinylations to Isononylvinylethern.

Ed., Wiley-VCH, 2003, Vol. 38, Seiten 79–81 ).This reaction can be carried out according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention by reacting the isononanol with acetylene, preferably in the presence of alkali metal oxides, at temperatures of 150-180 ° C ( Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 6th.

Figure DE102012105879A1_0001
In an alternative but equally preferred embodiment, isononanol undergoes a so-called transvinylation reaction with a vinyl ester of another carboxylic acid
Figure DE102012105879A1_0001
wherein R is 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl and R 1 is often methyl or ethyl, so that, for example, vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate is used as Transvinylierungsreagenz. ( Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 4th Edition, 1983, Verlag Chemie, Volume 23, pages 606-607 ). In order to force the chemical equilibrium towards the desired vinyl ether, an excess of the transvinylation reagent R 1 -C (O) O-CH =CH 2 is often used and / or the carboxylic acid formed is removed from the reaction mixture. The continuous or semi-continuous process can be configured, for example, as a reactive distillation ( EP 0 497 340 A2 ) or as a bubble column with attached column, which are additionally followed by a rectification column and a stripping column ( WO 2011/139360 A1 and WO 2011/139361 A1 ). However, it is also possible to carry out the transvinylation reaction without removal of a reaction partner and to split the resulting reaction mixture into the individual components in a separate work-up section ( DE 10 2012 002282.4 . DE 10 2012 002274.3 ). Suitable transvinylation catalysts are, for example, ruthenium or palladium compounds which are used unmodified or modified with mono- or polydentate nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing ligands, such as 2,2'-bipyridyl or 1,10-phenanthroline. The carboxylic acid corresponding to the transvinylation reagent obtained as by-product can be further derivatized in the composite or used directly as a product of value. For example, the corresponding carboxylic acid can be converted to the vinyl ester, which is then used again as a transvinylation reagent for isononanol, or the corresponding carboxylic acid can be converted to a carboxylic acid ester, a carboxylic acid anhydride, a carboxylic acid halide, a carboxylic acid amide or into the corresponding alcohol by methods known per se ,

Vorzugsweise verwendet man kostengünstig verfügbare Vinylether wie Methylvinylether ( GB1105956 , J.E.McKeon, P.Fitton, Tetrahedron 1972, 28(2), 233 ).According to an alternative but also preferred embodiment, the transvinylation reaction of the isononanol with a vinyl ether is carried out as a transvinylation reagent, so that mutatis mutandis the reaction conditions described above are used. Preferably, inexpensive vinyl ethers, such as methyl vinyl ether ( GB1105956 . JEMCKeon, P.Fitton, Tetrahedron 1972, 28 (2), 233 ).

Auflage, 1988, Seite 152 ; US6433217 ) According to an alternative but equally preferred embodiment, 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid is derivatized into the glycidyl ester by methods known per se, for example by reaction with epichlorohydrin, which can be used to modify alkyd resins ( Weissermel, Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, VCH Verlagsgesellschaft, 3rd edition, 1988, page 152 ; US6433217 )

Another option is the construction of the i-nonyl skeleton by acid-catalyzed carbonylation of the diisobutene in the sense of a Koch reaction (cf. Arpe, Industrial Organic Chemistry, 6th edition, 2007, page 154 et seq ). This essentially produces 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentanoic acid. In analogy to the above statements, further derivatives are derived therefrom, such as the corresponding glycidyl ester or the vinyl ester of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentanoic acid.
