Abstract

The method involves triggering a front airbag (3), associated to a vehicle seat (2) during impending or detected side collision (K) of a vehicle (1) when the vehicle seat is arranged on a side facing the collision side of the vehicle and not occupied by an occupant (I). The front airbag is triggered in multiple stages. The collision of the vehicle facing side is arranged and not triggered by the occupants occupied in the vehicle seat assigned with a side airbag (4) i.e. thorax bag, where the side bag is released in multiple stages.

Description

  • The invention relates to methods for controlling a restraint system for occupants of a vehicle.
  • Restriction systems for vehicle occupants are generally known from the prior art, which reduce the severity of injury of vehicle occupants in the event of a collision of the vehicle with an obstacle. These restraint systems include various airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. A vehicle seat associated with airbags and belt tensioners are activated in a detected lateral collision, when the respective vehicle seat is located on a side facing the collision and is occupied by a vehicle occupant. In the event of a collision on a passenger side of the vehicle, side airbags and so-called windowbags assigned to the driver's seat as well as the seatbelt pretensioner assigned to the driver's seat are activated.
  • The invention is based on the object to provide a comparison with the prior art improved method for controlling a restraint system for occupants of a vehicle.
  • The object is achieved by a method having the features specified in claim 1.
  • Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
  • In the method for controlling a restraint system for occupants of a vehicle, a front airbag assigned to a vehicle seat is triggered in the event of an imminent or a detected lateral collision of the vehicle with an obstacle if the vehicle seat is arranged on a collision-facing side of the vehicle and not by a vehicle seat Occupants is occupied.
  • The inventive method allows in a particularly advantageous manner that a space in the vehicle before the respective unoccupied vehicle seat with the front airbag is at least largely filled, so that a sitting on the next to the unoccupied vehicle seat occupant in a lateral displacement in the course of the collision or after this can be intercepted by the front airbag. Thus, a contact of the occupant with an instrument panel, the A-pillar, a windshield, a side window and a front door panel in the collision facing area of the vehicle, especially in a high collision severity and associated strong body deformation avoided. Due to a large volume of the airbag and its design for very high energy inputs, both a protection of a head region of the occupant and a thorax region can be realized.

Method for controlling a restraint system for occupants (I) of a vehicle ( 1 ), characterized in that in the case of an imminent or a detected lateral collision (K) of the vehicle ( 1 ) with an obstacle ( 9 ) a vehicle seat ( 2 ) assigned front airbag ( 3 ) is triggered when the vehicle seat ( 2 ) on a side of the vehicle facing the collision (K) ( 1 ) and is not occupied by an occupant (I).
  2. A method according to claim 1, characterized in that in occupied with an occupant (I) driver seat and not occupied with an occupant (I) passenger seat and an imminent or a detected side collision (K) of the vehicle ( 1 ) with an obstacle ( 9 ) on a passenger side of the vehicle ( 1 ) a passenger airbag front airbag ( 3 ) is triggered.
