  • The cockpit of motor vehicles has a multiplicity of different display devices which inform a driver and the occupants of the motor vehicle about driving and vehicle conditions.
  • Some of the display devices relate to safety-related aspects, such as an indication of an opening state of vehicle doors and the like, so that the driver is informed of an improperly closed vehicle door.
  • In particular, when getting out of the vehicle there is a risk that the occupants inadvertently open a vehicle door too far and they hit against an obstacle, such as an object, a wall or a person, resulting in either damage to an object or the vehicle door or injury to the person.

  • The above approaches, however, have the disadvantage that before opening the vehicle door, the driver does not receive any indication as to how far the vehicle door can be safely opened without abutting the obstacle.
  • It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a way that warns the driver of a motor vehicle in front of an obstacle and helps him continue to avoid that the vehicle door abuts the obstacle.
  • Disclosure of the invention
  • According to the invention a device according to claim 1 and a method according to the independent claim is provided.

  • According to a first aspect, an apparatus for providing information about an obstacle for a vehicle door of a motor vehicle is provided. The device comprises:
