Zur aktiven Lärmminderung an Eisenbahnstrecken werden Lärmschutzwände errichtet. Diese sind umso effizienter, je näher sie am Gleis stehen und können damit niedriger gebaut werden. Das Regel-Lichtraumprofil gibt die für Zugfahrten minimal erforderliche Breite an. Auf einigen Strecken werden überbreite Züge standardmäßig zugelassen, hier gelten fallweise andere Lichtraumprofile.Noise barriers are being built to actively reduce noise on railway lines.
