Meist arbeitet man in flüssiger Phase.
Raney-Nickel-Katalysators in guten Ausbeuten hergestellt.
Process for the continuous production of γ-valerolactone by

bei Normaldruck und einer Temperatur von 175 bis 225°.The aim of the invention is a continuous process for production
of: y-valerolactone in high yield by catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid
at normal pressure and a temperature of 175 to 225 °.
The hydrogenation of levulinic acid takes place in the presence of a copper-containing one

Beispiel 1 6 Teile gepulvertes technisches Cuprioxyd wurden mit 4
Teilen einer wäßrigen Natriumsilikatlösung (»Wasserglas«) von 40° Be verrührt. Das
Natriumsilikat entsprach der bekannten Type-,N:z. Es hatte ein Na2O : Si02 Verhältnis
von 1 : 3,22 und enthielt 8,9°/o Na. 0 und 28,7°/0 Si 02, so daß der Gesamtfeststoffgehalt
37,6"/,) betrug.
Example 1 6 parts of powdered technical cupric oxide were mixed with 4
Parts of an aqueous sodium silicate solution ("water glass") at 40 ° Be stirred. That
Sodium silicate corresponded to the known type, N: z. It had a Na2O: Si02 ratio
of 1: 3.22 and contained 8.9% Na. 0 and 28.7% / 0 Si 02, so that the total solids content
37.6 "/,). The resulting black paste-like mass was placed in an oven
dried at about 78 ° for about 20 hours and then pulverized. After adding
0.1 part of graphite flakes (as a molding agent) to the powder obtained became the mixture
pressed into cylindrical briquettes or cookies 0.3 X 0.3 cm in size. The product,
containing approximately 80 "/, Cu O and .200 /, anhydrous sodium silicate was then
heated in a stream of hydrogen to about 400 ° in order to reduce the copper oxide, whereby
the catalyst has been activated for the hydrogenation.

Levulinic acid was then evaporated in a hot stream of hydrogen in such an amount that 0.5 g of levulinic acid was contained in 5 liters of hydrogen. The vaporous mixture was then passed over the catalyst at about 180 ° at a rate of about 5 liters per minute, the pressure being between 0.07 and 0.35 kg / cm 2 in order to compensate for the pressure drop caused by the catalyst bed. The vaporous reaction mixture was then condensed. It contained γ-valerolactone in an amount corresponding to 47% of the theory. This γ-valerolactone was separated from the water formed in the reaction, for example unconverted levulinic acid and n-valeric acid, by fractional distillation and the unconverted hydrogen was returned to the reaction chamber with additional levulinic acid. It is assumed that the overall yield of γ-valerolactone in this example was somewhat lower because the levulinic acid had reacted with the sodium silicate contained in the catalyst. EXAMPLE 2 A copper chromite catalyst was prepared by mixing a copper nitrate solution with an ammonium bichromate solution containing a slight excess of ammonia in such amounts that a copper chromite catalyst with 50% CuO and 50% Cr 2 O 3 was formed during the calcination. The resulting precipitate was filtered and dried at 70 to 100 ° to a free-flowing powder. It was then calcined, washed with acetic acid, dried and shaped into 0.3 cm pellets using graphite as a molding agent. The resulting mass was then reduced with hydrogen at about 400 ° to obtain the active catalyst. In numerous experiments, a vaporous mixture of hydrogen and levulinic acid was passed over the catalyst under the conditions specified in Example 1, as indicated in Table I below. Table I.

5 250 0.46 5 85
6 250 0.45 10 88
As can be seen, very high yields of γ-valerolactone were obtained, which in certain cases are practically quantitative. The comparatively low yields in experiments 5 and 6 seem to be ascribed to the high temperatures which favor the further reduction of the lactone to n-valeric acid. Example 3 A copper chromite catalyst made of 83.20 %, Cu 0 and 16.3% Cr 2 O 3 and graphite as molding agent was produced as described in Example 2. With it the following results were obtained: Table II

The comparatively low yield obtained in Experiment 7 is mainly due to relatively large amounts of unconverted levulinic acid in the reaction products. This can be avoided by increasing the reaction temperature or the contact time.
