Field of application of the invention

The invention relates to a method and a device for cleaning the granular filter media of surface filters, in particular of slow sand filters and infiltration systems.

Characteristic of the known technical solutions

Since the fine-grained surface filters achieve a much better cleaning action than the fast filters operating as deep bed filters, their use can not be dispensed with in many cases. Their application is currently limited mainly by the high time and material costs for their cleaning. In almost all cases, their use is only possible after extensive pre-purification stages, such as flocculation, sedimentation and rapid filtration.

Various methods are known for cleaning the colmation and invasion layer in slow sand filters and infiltration basins. These work mainly with mechanical scrapers or hydromechanical. For this purpose, the upper filter medium layer is removed, cleaned and reinstalled.

In a known device, the sand is taken up to a maximum of 10 cm deep with water jet pumps, separated within the unit by means of a centrifugal force limiter from the sludge water and then reinstalled. The muddy water is drained off. To clean the filter medium, the filter must be taken out of service, whereby the duration of the regeneration significantly limits the overall performance of the surface fi lters.

Furthermore, a device is known in which the upper layer of sand is fluidized by water jets and deposited in a settling chamber, while the specific lighter pollutants are led out with the flow of water from the filter area. This process is taking place under the filter overflow. The disadvantages of this device are that the risk of deep contamination of the filter bed is not excluded by the hydraulic fluidization and no defined flat surface is formed. The already concentrated sludge is diluted again by the considerable flushing water requirement, whereby a complex after-treatment is required.

There are also devices (DE-AS 1636300) are known in which a downwardly open box is placed on the filter bed, from which the hydraulically fluidized by pressurized water contaminants are withdrawn. In this case, a negative pressure is generated in the box and discharged more water than is supplied to the hydraulic fluidization. The disadvantage is that no continuous forward movement is possible and the car must be moved after lifting the washing device.

Only a mechanical fluidization of the filter layer, as described in the DRP 334671, leads to slow sand filters and infiltration tanks to irreversible soil pollution and is therefore not applicable.

A significant increase in the performance of surface filters can only be achieved if they are cleaned without interrupting the filtration process by means of continuously operating devices which detect the entire filter medium layer and exclude deep contamination.

Object of the invention

The object of the invention is the effective cleaning of the granular filter material to increase the performance of surface filters. The effort for the pre-cleaning, the space required for the filter basins and the investment and operating expenses, in particular the electrical energy and labor input, are to be reduced.
