Description

The present invention relates to a method for stabilizing poilyolefins, the effect of which is to increase resistance to biological degradation upon implantation in an organism, and to enhance tolerance by the organism.

Polyolefins (for example polyethylene) are used in human medicine as implants, for example in the form of articulated prostheses, mammary prostheses, cardiac pacemaker electrode isolation, etc. During exposure of these implants in the body, the polymeric material degrades, resulting in gradual deterioration of the implant's performance. Impairment of implant function decreases, eventually its failure.

As a result, reimplantations must always be performed which always present a greater or lesser risk to the patient's health.

To date, there is no known effective method of stabilizing polyolefins against biological degradation induced by the physiological environment of an organism. Only a reduction in degradation of polypropylene stabilized by phenolic antioxidants or mixtures thereof with a synergistic additive when implanted in experimental animals is described in the literature. Phenol derivatives are usually harmful substances and cause adverse reactions in contact with living tissue. Some of these substances have carcinogenic effects.

These drawbacks are overcome by the use of the polyolefins stabilized according to the invention, which is based on the addition of 0.01 to 5% tocopherol to the polyolefins.

Stabilization of polyolefins with tocopherol increases their resistance to degradation under the influence of the physiological environment of the organism. It improves the reliability of function and extends the lifetime of implants of these materials several times compared to non-stabilized polyolefins. According to the invention, the stabilized polyolefins are harmless to health, do not cause adverse tissue reactions in the vicinity of the implant and have a beneficial effect on the healing process.

Způsob stabilizace polyolefinů vyplývá z těchto příkladů.The method for stabilizing polyolefins results from these examples.

Po dokonalé homogenizaci se směs dále zpracovává technologiemi obvyklými pro zpracování plastů.100 wt. parts of polypropylene are mixed with 0.04 wt. parts of calcium stearate and with 0.3 wt. parts of gamma-tocopherol. After perfect homogenization, the mixture is further processed by technologies common for plastics processing.

Příklad 4Example 4

100 hmot. dílů pol-4-methylpentenu se smísí s 0,4 hmot. díly beta-tokoferolu. Po dokonalé homogenizaci se směs dále zpracovává technologiemi obvyklými pro· zpracování plastů.100 wt. parts of pol-4-methylpentene are mixed with 0.4 wt. parts of beta-tocopherol. After perfect homogenization, the mixture is further processed by conventional plastics processing techniques.

Příklad 5Example 5

100 hmot. dílů kopolymeru ethylenu s propylenem se smísí s 0,2 hmot. díly alfa-tokoferolu. Po dokonalé homogenizaci se směs dále· zpracovává technologiemi obvyklými pro zpracování plastů.100 wt. 0.2 parts by weight of ethylene-propylene copolymer are mixed with 0.2 wt. parts of alpha-tocopherol. After perfect homogenization, the mixture is further processed by technologies common to plastics processing.

Uvedené směsi vykázaly při subkutánmí implantaci v pokusných zvířatech 5- až 6násobně delší životnost než polymery nestahilizované.Said compositions showed a 5 to 6-fold longer lifetime than non-downloadable polymers at subcutaneous implantation in experimental animals.
