Description

因特网电视节目指南系统
本发明涉及因特网，并特别涉及用于通过因特网向用户提供电视节目指南信息和服务的技术。
通过有线电视系统和卫星电视系统可获得大量的电视频道。按传统方式电视观众必须查阅事先印刷的电视节目表以确定具体一天编排播放什么节目。近来，已开发了基于电视的节目指南，这允许电视观众直接在他们的电视机上查看电视节目表。
例如，Prevue频道是有线电视经营者可以使用户通过专用有线电视频道获得的滚屏电视节目表服务。观众能够调谐到适当的电视频道，以便查看当前正在播放的及编排在近几个小时将要播放的电视节目的节目表。虽然Prevue频道是一种服务，但是观众因这种服务的被动性质受到一些约束。例如，观众不能查看下一天或下一星期的电视节目表。

虽然被动的滚屏式指南和交互式机顶盒指南是电视节目指南信息有用的来源，但是数百万拥有个人计算机的用户却未能获得联机电视节目表。此外，用户还不能从允许用户观看与给定的电视节目相关的宣传的视频剪辑、访谈片断、音频剪辑、和其它多媒体材料的各种不同的选项中进行选择。
因而本发明的一个目的是要提供一种电视节目指南系统，这种系统从服务器通过因特网通信链路向用户的多媒体系统提供电视节目表。
本发明进一步目的是要提供一种电视节目指南系统，这种系统允许用户在文本或静止图象上点击，以观看宣传的视频剪辑、音频剪辑、访谈片断、及与给定电视节目相关的其它多媒体材料。
本发明的这些和其它目的是根据本发明的原理通过提供一种因特网电视节目指南系统而实现的。具有媒体库和数据服务器的计算机系统用来提供多媒体剪辑和相关的电视节目指南数据。多媒体材料和节目指南数据提供给web服务器。web服务器把该信息通过因特网通信链路提供给用户的多媒体系统。
多媒体系统有用于从因特网通信链路接收信息并从而处理这种信息的处理单元。多媒体系统还具有用于接收电视信号的视频单元。在第一实施例中，处理单元是基于运行带有插入件的标准web浏览器的个人计算机的。在第二实施例中，多媒体系统的处理单元和视频单元是通过集成的个人计算机和电视单元提供的。在第三实施例中，处理单元在因特网可用机顶盒中，而视频单元基于电视。

电视节目指南数据和相关的多媒体信息最好以一个或多个web网页的形式提供给用户的多媒体系统。因为这种配置允许使用广泛采用的超文本传输协议(http)和正出现的web标准，故拥有个人计算机的用户能够使用平常可得到的web浏览器软件访问信息。因为节目指南信息是通过因特网散发的，故用户能够在远程位置访问这信息。例如，在乘小汽车、公共汽车、火车、或飞机旅行时，或从旅馆的房间或商务会议，在工作时从个人计算机，或在任何有通向因特网链路适当的环境中，用户都能够访问电视节目指南服务。在所有的配置中(不论用户是从他们的家中或是从远方位置访问节目指南服务)，系统从使用已建立的因特网协议和标准而获益。

电视节目信息和相关的数据可以通过通信链路22从传输服务器16传输到web服务器20。通信链路20可以是互联网的一部分，或可以是标准的专用通信线路。Web服务器20能够通过通信链路26连接到因特网24。通信链路26最好是电话线路或其它适当的因特网通信通路。
如果如图1所示传输服务器16和web服务器20是分开的装置，则传输服务器16能够用作为公共数据处理设备，用于使用存储在传输服务器16上的电视节目数据的其它应用程序。如果需要，传输服务器16和web服务器20的功能能够集成在单一的机器中。
Web服务器20使用诸如TCP/IP(传输控制协议/互联网协议)等标准协议及超文本传送协议，以便形成在因特网24上用户通过通信链路34、36和38在多媒体系统28、30和32可得的电视节目信息。通信链路34、36和38是由电话线、射频(RF)链路、电缆调制解调器链路、卫星碟形天线链路、这些链路的组合、或任何其它适当的因特网连接通路形成的因特网链路。

多媒体系统30具有集成的个人计算机和电视46，诸如可从南达科他州North Sioux City的Gateway 2000公司购买的Gateway 2000DestinationPC-TV混合机型。电视信号是在输入48提供的。因特网访问是通过因特网通信链路36提供的。
多媒体系统32具有带因特网能力的机顶盒50。机顶盒50可使用World Gate公司的TV Online机顶盒应用软件，该软件可在诸如宾夕法尼亚州Hatboro市的通用仪器公司的CTF-2200及乔治亚州亚特兰大市的Scientific Atlanta公司的8600x这样的机顶盒上实现。机顶盒50通过输入52接收电视信号。因特网访问是通过因特网链路38提供的。包含电视和因特网信息的视频显示信号通过线路56提供给电视54。
在系统10操作期间，通常在web服务器20上进行一定的数据处理功能，诸如用户启动的搜索和拣选。如果需要，这种功能可以在多媒体系统28、30和32中的适当的数据处理组件上执行。
某些电视指南功能只要求多媒体系统28、30和32包含web浏览能力。其它的功能需要电视调谐和视频记录能力。图2示出一般能够支持被控制的电视调谐和视频记录的多媒体系统配置(若需用)。如图2所示，多媒体系统58具有处理单元60，该单元最好包含用于存储指令的存储器和用于执行指令的微处理器。处理单元60通过因特网链路62访问因特网。可通过通信链路66连接到处理单元60的视频单元64包含记录单元68、调谐器单元70、及监视器72。在输入74接收电视信号。

处理单元60的操作基于处理单元60中的存储器中存储的指令和通过用户接口76从用户收到控制输入的执行而被确定。适当的用户接口包括手持红外线遥控器、键盘、指点装置、及语音识别装置。
诸如图2的多媒体系统58这样的多媒体系统可用来代替多媒体系统28、30、和32。另外，诸如系统28、30、和32这样的系统可被修改而包含如所示多媒体系统58的特性。例如，如果希望提供带有处理视频记录电路的多媒体系统，则可在诸如多媒体系统28、30、和32的系统中提供视频记录单元(诸如记录单元68)。此外，在诸如系统58的系统中，一定的组件可使用一次以上(例如，调谐器70可包含在电视组件内又包含在系统58中的盒式录像机组件内)。

媒体库80和数据服务器82通过内部网83与传输服务器84互连。媒体库80、数据服务器82、及内部网83构成了计算机系统87。电视节目信息可以关系数据库的格式存储在数据服务器82上，并可按面向对象数据库格式存储在传输服务器84上。以C++编程语言实现的建立过程可用来周期地(例如每天一次)建立电视节目信息的临时数据集，供存储在传输服务器84上。传输服务器84还通过数据输入85接收用于因特网电视节目指南服务的信息，诸如天气数据、体育比赛结果等等。
在每一有线电视系统前端设备88处装有web服务器86。有线电视系统前端设备88具有用于向围绕前端设备88的服务区中的顾客分发有线电视信号的其它组件(未示出)。在相对靠近用户的位置提供web服务器86允许把电视节目信息有效地提供给用户。

广告132和134允许服务供应商从需要使用因特网电视节目指南系统10(图1)或78(图3)广告其产品的各方产生收入。广告132和134可以是视频静止图象，可以是动画，或可以包含全动视频。音频材料也可以与广告132和134相关联。例如，当用户点击广告132或134时，能够提供补充的音频信息。如果需要，广告132或134可以与由广告方提供的web站点链接。所显示的广告132或134可以为不同的登广告者通过不同的广告周期地(例如，每几秒钟一次)循环显示。
由系统10(图1)和系统78(图3)所提供的因特网电视节目指南服务的一个重要方面，涉及到联机电视节目列表和即将来临的电影和特别事件的信息。可对用户呈现关于可得的联机信息的数个选择。例如，可对用户呈现在转向本地选项136、转向国内选项138、和转向卫星选项140之间进行选择的机会。在用户已经选择了这些选项之一后可访问服务的另外的特性。

如果没有本地服务可得，则还可对用户提供如图8所示的再挑选网页152。再挑选网页152向用户提供另一机会选择转向国内选项138或转向卫星选项140。此外，再挑选网页152向用户提供了城市选项154的选择，该选项比转向本地选项136(图4)与较少的节目信息限制集相关。选择城市选项154，用户使用箭头键156(或另外可直接向框158键入城市的名称)选择所需的城市。在输入所需的城市之后，通过点击提交按钮160向系统提交城市信息。因为选择城市选项136比转向本地选项136有较少的局限，故选取选择城市选项154使得更可能有对用户存在可得的节目列表集合。

用户可以从转向国内选项138(图4和8)或转向卫星选项140(图4和8)到达节目指南菜单网页194。如果用户选择了转向本地选项136(图4)并成功地完成了登记网页162(图9)，则用户通过在本地有线电视站点网页170(图10)上选择节目指南选项190，可以到达节目指南菜单网页194(图15)。用户还可以通过选择城市选项154到达节目指南菜单网页194(图15)。到节目指南菜单网页194的这些通路的每一个要求作出稍有不同的用户选择。

选择城市选项154(图8)要求用户输入指定特定城市的信息。当用户通过点击提交按钮160提交城市信息时，用户被带到登记网页162(图9)。用户在完成登记网页162上的表格后，到达来自本地有线电视站点网页170(图10)的节目指南菜单网页194。
不论使用什么选项到达节目指南菜单网页194(图15)，信息最好由系统10或78保存，这指示由用户已经作出怎样的选择。保存这一信息允许后继显示和其它信息将被自动定制以反映用户选择的节目列表。
如同15中所示，节目指南菜单网页194可能由两个较小的web网页构造：顶部web网页198和底部web网页200。顶部web网页198包含基于对许多不同的系统经营者公用的图形和文本的选项202。底部web网页200可以包含系统特定的宣传性材料，诸如按每收视付费的视频宣传204。这种方式划分的节目指南网页194允许系统资源比其它可能的方式更有效地使用，因为顶部web网页198中的公用材料能够供一个以上的本地有线电视系统使用。
如果需要，可提供电视频道选项206和208，允许用户方便地访问有关的电视频道节目服务。当用户选择选项206和208时，处理单元60(图2)向视频单元68发送控制信号，指引视频单元64的调谐器70调谐到所需要的节目服务正在播放的电视频道。
例如，如果用户希望把视频单元64调谐到Prevue频道，则用户可以点击节目指南电视频道选项206。当选择节目指南电视频道选项206时，处理单元60指引视频单元64从电视信号输入74选择适当的电视信号，使得Prevue频道显示在监视器72上。Prevue频道是在显示宣传性视频和广告的同时显示电视节目标题滚屏列表的节目指南服务的类型的一例。
如果用户希望把视频单元64调谐到Sneak Prevue频道，则用户可以点击电影指南电视频道选项208。当选择了电影指南电视频道选项208时，处理单元60指引视频单元64从电视信号输入74选择适当的电视信号，使得Sneak Prevue频道显示在监视器72上。SneakPrevue频道是显示即将来到的每收视付费事件和奖励频道提供的宣传性视频的电影指南服务类型的一例。
电视频道选项206和208允许用户从基于因特网的电视节目指南服务，直接跳到通常的电视频道上提供的相关的节目指南服务。设立这种直接链接对用户是有利的，因为这允许用户能够避免离开基于因特网服务，并同时要试图记住所需的电视服务的正确的频道号码下，人工调谐视频单元64到适当的频道这样的烦琐步骤。
选项202允许用户对于用户预先选择的意向区域(国内、卫星、或本地)选择如何显示各种节目列表。典型的选项212包括按时间的选项210、按频道的选项212、按类别的选项214、及搜索选项216。
若选择按时间的选项210，则对用户呈现如图16所示的按时间的网页218。按时间网页218包含节目列表220，该列表是按频道顺序从上到下并按播放时间从左到右组织的。在按时间的网页218中，节目列表220中的节目可以从当前正在播放的节目开始列出。例如，人工当前时间是在1：30 PM和2：00 PM之间，则节目列表220可以从1：30 PM开始的节目开始。另外，节目列表220中的节目可基于预定的时间片段(例如，上午、下午或最初的时间)列出。若需要，可显示距当前时间最近的时间片段。节目列表220典型地包含约为二小时编排的信息。

用户通过从各查看按钮234之中选择适当的时间、频道、类别、或搜索按钮，能够在不同的可得的查看选项之间进行选择。查看按钮234把用户带到在选择了图15对应的选项202时呈现的相同的web网页。例如，按频道选项212和频道查看按钮234都链接到按频道网页242(图17)。

如果需要，当当前正在播放的节目由用户选择时，可以显示直接调谐按钮231。当直接调谐按钮231由用户点击时，处理单元60指引视频单元64从电视信号输入74选择适当的电视信号，以便在监视器72上显示选择的节目。
当用户从节目指南菜单网页194(图15)选择按频道选项212时，或当用户点击频道查看按钮时，诸如按时间的网页218(图16)的频道查看按钮234，则呈现图17的按频道网页242。按频道网页242包含频道列表244。频道列表244可以按频道号码顺序排布，并可以对一定的频道包含相关的图标246。用户可以点击频道列表244中各个频道248以获得基于选择的频道的节目信息表。用户还能够点击到列出的网络web站点的图象或文本链接，以便被超链接到该站点。

当用户从节目指南菜单网页194(图15)中选择搜索选项216时，或者当用户点击搜索查看按钮时，诸如在按时间网页218(图16)中的搜索查看按钮234，则呈现图21的搜索网页272。搜索字段选项274允许用户选择搜索字段，诸如标题、演员、类别、说明、评级。在搜索文本框276中录入搜索文本串。

如果用户选择热拣选选项294，则对用户提供如图24所示的热拣选网页302。热拣选网页302包含对其可获得宣传材料的流行节目的图象304、306、308和310。图象304和308一般包含节目标题。图象306和310一般包含演员静止图象。显示图象304、306、308和310的节目可根据它们在每收视付费服务即将来到的频率自动选择。即将来到的频率可基于给定的节目在预定的时间周期(例如七天)中预期出现的次数计算。预定的周期可从当前日期和时间开始，从而允许无缝穿越每月的障碍。用来确定显示那些节目图象的信息最好基于由用户事先所作的选择(本地、国内、卫星等)定制。
当用户点击图象304、306、308和310之一时，用户被带到节目信息网页240(图30)，该网页允许用户获得附加的信息，诸如有关所选节目的视频剪辑和访谈片断。当用户点击每收视付费链接312或每收视付费链接314时，用户被带到每收视付费网页316(图26)，该网页对所选节目向用户提供每收视付费节目列表。
当用户选择电影漫游者选项296时，对用户呈现如图25所示的电影漫游者网页318。电影漫游者网页318列出用户(基于先前的选择)可得的每收视付费和奖励频道。特别地，电影漫游者网页318包含每收视付费频道选项320和奖励频道选项322。
如果用户选择每收视付费选项320之一，则用户被带到如图26所示的每收视付费网页316。每收视付费网页316包含用于每收视付费事件的节目列表324。多个每收视付费节目可以同时以网格的格式列出，或对于选择的每收视付费频道(即频道35)如图26所示列出。与几个其它网页相同，网页316包含节目信息框325，当来自节目列表324的节目已由用户选择时该框包含节目信息。点击框325(或框325中的近看图标)把用户带到节目信息网页240(图30)。

当用户从电影指南菜单网页196(图23)选择访谈信息300时，对用户呈现如图29所示的访谈网页338。访谈网页338包含各种主题的静止图象340。如同因特网节目指南服务中其它网页那样，在访谈网页338上所呈现的主题被定制为反映用户选择的服务类型(例如用户对特别有线电视系统经营者的选择，或用户对国内服务或特定卫星服务的选择)。于是，图象340与用户当前可得的对于电影和其它节目的访谈相关。确定使哪一个访谈图象340在访谈网页338上可得可基于对预定时间区间中(例如在即将来临的一周中)最频繁编排的即将来临的节目的计算。如果需要，也可提供对应于当前用户不可得的节目的访谈。用户通过点击图象340之一可选择给定的访谈。然后用户被带到节目信息网页240(图30)。
如同30所示，节目信息网页240包含关于选择的节目(例如，电影Birdcage)的详细的信息。节目信息网页240最好包含图象342，该图象起初可作为节目标题(例如，来自JPEG或GIF文件)的静止图象呈现。当用户点击图象342时，呈现相关的视频剪辑。节目信息网页240还包含标题344、演员信息346、及节目说明348。附加的信息可包含内容信息350和流派信息352。如果需要，可提供关于导演、发行年份、及其它有关条目的信息。可提供附加的演员信息(例如，以传记信息及通过点击演员346可访问的相关视频剪辑的形式)。

节目选项网页240包含与由用户在前面的网页上选择的节目相关的信息。用户可以通过各种途径达到节目信息网页240。例如，用户可以通过点击所需的节目标题从按时间的网页218(图16)中的节目列表220选择一节目。用户还可通过点击适当的列表从每收视付费网页316(图26)或奖励服务网页326(图27)中选择每收视付费或奖励节目。当用户达到节目信息网页240时，对所选的节目提供节目信息。图标或其它标识符用来标识对于选择的节目什么服务可得。例如，如果对于给定的节目没有评论视频剪辑可得，则在评论图标356之下的文件选项可被省略。类似地，如果对于一电影没有视频静止图象可得，则图象342可被省略。
节目选项网页240包含节目列表366，该列表对选择的节目提供节目标题、频道、及时间和日期信息。在图30所示的例子中，电影Birdcage在下周中三天出现在频道35(每收视付费频道)上。当用户点击节目列表366中的每收视付费项时，用户被带到定单网页336(图31)。
如图31中所示，定单网页336包含关于如何定单一个每收视付费事件的指令368。定单网页336还包含电话号码询问框370和个人标识号码框372。用户可通过点击发定单按钮发出对每收视付费事件的定单。由用户向框370和372输入的信息用来检验用户的身份和帐户状态。一旦用户的信息被验证，则选择的每收视付费事件即可向用户的多媒体系统投送。
处理每收视付费定单的方式取决于用来向用户投送服务的具体硬件。定单和帐户校验信息一般是以电子方式提交给前端设备有线电视系统的经营者或与前端设备系统链接的第三方定单执行处理器。在前端设备的设备自动地处理定单并安排向用户投送每收视付费事件。一般，前端设备设备指引用户的多媒体系统中的设备(诸如机顶盒或类似的集成组件)显示定单的事件。
在图3的系统78中，在有线电视系统前端设备88的web服务器86可用来接收和处理使用定单网页336提交的每收视付费定单。在处理了定单之后，web服务器86能够指引前端设备88处的普通的每收视付费设备授权使用机顶盒116显示定单的每收视付费事件。
用于投送每收视付费事件类似的技术可以和按诸如图1-3所示的其它硬件配置一起使用。如果需要，在web服务器86处理了用户的每收视付费定单之后，web服务器86能够向用户的多媒体系统58(图2)中的处理单元60(图2)传送授权信息。处理单元60(图2)能够指引视频单元64(图2)基于该授权信息，解码并显示来自收到的电视信号74(图2)之中的每收视付费事件。

当用户在与节目指南服务相关的web网页之一点击一广告(通常是一图象)时，用户可能被直接带到更详细的广告网页上。另外，用户可能被带到如图32所示的广告者的展示窗网页376。广告者的展示窗网页376包含可点击的图象，诸如图象378、380和382，它们链接到更详细的广告网页上。广告者的展示窗网页376还可包含广告人的标识语图象，诸如图象390。文本条392包含可点击的文本字段，通过点击图象这些字段复制可得的选择。
在广告者展示窗网页376中的广告者标识语图象可以链接到广告者的web站点。例如，图象390可链接到UPN的web站点，使得如果用户点击图象390，则用户将被带到UPN web站点。

以上只是说明本发明的原理，且业内专业人员在不背离本发明的范围和实质的情形下可作出各种修改。

Claims (80)

1.一种用于通过因特网通信链路向多媒体系统用户提供信息的web网页的因特网电视节目指南系统，包括：
用于提供电视节目列表的计算机系统；以及
用于从计算机系统接收电视节目列表的web服务器，其中当用户以多媒体系统访问电视节目列表时，web服务器通过因特网通信链路向多媒体系统提供节目列表。
2.权利要求1中定义的系统，其中计算机系统还包括用于向web服务器提供与电视节目列表相关的多媒体材料的装置。
3.权利要求2中定义的系统，其中用于提供多媒体材料的装置包括用于提供宣传性视频剪辑的装置。
4.权利要求2中定义的系统，其中用于提供多媒体材料的装置包括用于提供访谈视频片断的装置。
5.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供转向国内的选项的装置，用户选择该选项以便接收基于国内电视列表的信息。
6.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供转向卫星的选项的装置，用户选择该选项以便接收基于卫星覆盖范围的电视列表的信息。
7.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供转向本地的选项的装置，用户选择该选项以便接收基于本地电视列表的信息。
8.权利要求7中定义的系统，还包括用于选择本地电视列表的位置的装置。
9.权利要求8中定义的系统，其中用于选择位置的装置包括用于接收从其可确定位置的邮政编码的装置。
10.权利要求8中定义的系统，其中用于选择位置的装置包括用于从地图选择本地区域的装置。
11.权利要求8中定义的系统，还包括当电视节目列表对所选择的位置不可得时，用于呈现再挑选web网页的的装置。

用于提供电影指南选项的装置；以及
用于当用户选择了电影指南选项时呈现电影指南菜单web网页的装置。

用于提供指南电视频道选项的装置；以及
用于当用户选择了指南选项时把多媒体系统调谐到指南电视频道的装置。
17.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括：
用于当选择的电视频道当前正在播放时提供直接调谐选项的装置；以及
用于当用户选择了直接调谐选项时把多媒体系统调谐到所选择的节目的电视频道的装置。
18.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供可选的选项以便按时间排布电视节目列表的装置。
19.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供可选的选项以便按频道排布电视节目列表的装置。
20.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于提供可选的选项以便按类别排布电视节目列表的装置。
21.权利要求1中定义的系统，还包括用于搜索电视节目列表的装置。
22.权利要求21中定义的系统，还包括用于按标题搜索电视节目列表的装置。

41.一种用于使用具有计算机系统和WEB服务器的因特网电视节目指南系统向多媒体系统处的用户通过因特网通信链路提供信息的WEB网页的方法，该方法包括步骤：
以计算机系统提供电视节目列表；
从带有web服务器的计算机系统接收电视节目列表；以及
使用web服务器通过因特网通信链路向多媒体系统提供电视节目列表，使得用户能够访问电视节目列表。
