Abstract

Description
本发明涉及电路板和可装配至其边缘的电连接器,并且更具体地涉及用于互连位于电路板上的接地电路总布线和位于连接器上的接地柱的装置。
在诸如板间互连之类的某些高密度电路板应用方式中,相配合的连接器中的一个装配至电路板之一的边缘上,而另一连接器或者装配至该边缘上或者装配至另一电路板的表面上。当装配至电路板边缘时,这些连接器占据了比其表面装配结构更小的电路板空间,因此它们更适合于这些应用方式。这些类型的连接器的例子公开在分别于1993年4月6日和1992年7月7日授予Korsunky等人的美国专利5199885和5127839中。在这种边缘装配的连接器中,信号接触部件通常具有以两平行排方式向外延伸的触脚,其中一排触脚与电路板一侧上的触垫相接触,另一排触脚与电路板的相对侧上的触垫相接触。接地部件如此设置,即其接地柱向外延伸成一排,此排接地柱位于两排信号触脚之间与它们平行。接地柱伸入电路板边缘处的孔中,并与横向排列的金属化通孔接触,这些金属化通孔是与电路板上的接地电路总布线互连的。使金属化通孔中的和触垫上的焊料熔化,从而在接地柱和触脚与它们相应的孔和触垫之间实现焊连。
随着这些电路板上的电路布线变得更密,边缘装配的连接器必须相应地变得更小,从而要求非常精密的接触部件。在将连接器装配至电路板的过程中,对准状态的任何变化都会导致接触部件的损坏。因此,必须精密对准。这就要求电路板边缘处的孔非常精确地位于两主表面之间。公知做法是,从电路板边缘向内并穿过金属化通孔的壁钻制或穿制或冲制这些孔。这会使绝缘电路板的部分进入金属化通孔中并影响随后的焊接工艺,因此必须在焊接之前清除掉这种杂物。另外,这些孔仅有大约0.018平方英寸,使得冲孔工具容易损坏。结果,要使这些开孔精确定位和定尺寸是困难且高代价的。所需要的是这样一种途径,即,使边缘装配的连接器的接地柱与电路板的金属化通孔互连,而且不需要在电路板边缘上形成孔。
电路板适于接纳装配至其一边缘上的电连接器。本发明包括沿所述边缘界定的开口,开口从边缘表面向内延伸至连通金属化通孔,且从一个主表面朝另一主表面延伸,或者,开口是完全延伸至另一主表面的槽。连接器的导柱可插入开口中,并被电连接至金属化通孔,金属化通孔向内与边缘表面隔开。连接器导柱可能是母线的接地导柱,或者是连接器的信号接触部件或电源接触部件的导柱,或者甚至是围绕连接器的屏蔽部件的导柱。除了通常设计结构的其它接触部件外,连接器可能具有这样一个导柱,此导柱可插入电路板边缘中的一个槽中,以用于屏蔽或供电。
在一特定实施例中,连接器包括具有触脚的信号接触部件和具有导柱的接地部件,触脚适于连至电路板上的电路布线,导柱适于连至电路板上的接地电路布线。电路板具有一个边缘和两个从此边缘延伸的相对主表面、位于主表面的至少一个上并与电路板上的电路布线电连接的导电触垫、以及多个邻近边缘的金属化通孔,金属化通孔基本上正交于主表面并且与电路板上的接地电路布线电连接。在电路板的边缘上形成有多个槽,这些槽从两主表面之一向另一主表面延伸或延伸至另一主表面,其中每个槽相交于相应的一个孔。每个槽适于接纳一个相应的导柱,以使导柱之轴基本上平行于两主表面并介于两主表面之间,而且诸如通过焊接与相应的金属化通孔电连接。另外,导柱还可沿触脚排以稍向上倾和稍向下倾交替之方式伸入相应槽中,以便在焊接时,这些导柱共同确定一种装至电路板边缘的机械固位结构。导柱也可具有全部在一个方向上稍微倾斜的端部。
在另一实施例中,在每个金属化通孔中固定有一个导电插塞,此插塞包括夹连通过槽插入金属化通孔的导柱的部分,此时一对弹性臂实现了与导柱的电连接。此后,可将导柱焊连至插塞,以完成电的和机械的连接。

在图1中示出了边缘装配的电连接器10和电路板12的一部分,连接器装至电路板上。电路板12具有两个相对的大致平行的主表面14和16,它们从一边缘18延伸。金属化电路布线20设在每一主表面上并端止于多个触垫22中的任意一个或者多个金属化通孔24中的任意一个,触垫22设在两个主表面上。在这个例子中,金属化通孔24连至电路板上的接地电路布线。在边缘18上如此形成有多个开口,例如槽26,即,每个槽与一个相应的金属化通孔24对准并相交。连接器10包括一个具有接地总线30的壳体28,总线30沿壳体28的纵向中心延伸并带有导柱32,导柱32从壳体上伸出并穿过相应的槽26而伸入相应的金属化通孔24。图2和3更详细地示出一个完全插入金属化通孔24中的导柱32,此导柱至少伸至这种程度,即,所示的顶端50几乎触及金属化通孔的远侧壁。在接地总线30的每侧,一排上接触部件34和一排下接触部件36从壳体28向外伸出,并具有分别与它们相应的触垫22相接触的触脚38和40,如图1所示。
在图4所示的本发明另一实施例中,所示的开口27沿电路板边缘18设置,此开口27仅部分地贯穿电路板12,从主表面14延伸至刚超过中心平面44,并与通孔24侧边相交。开口27的侧壁可以是斜切的。
图5显示出,当导柱32a、32b穿过槽26伸入通孔24时,它们可以稍向上和向下倾斜,并被焊至通孔24;倾斜角可以是例如15°。可以看出,交替上下倾斜的导柱在焊接时提供了更有效的机械联接。导柱也可全部在同一方向上稍微倾斜。
如图6所示,槽26是借助刀具60切制出的。此刀具包括具有直的背缘64和以离开背缘方式倾斜的前缘66的刀头62,背缘64大体上平行于金属化通孔24的轴,这样前缘和背缘向离开尖顶68的方向发散。尖顶68小于金属化通孔的内径,并在前切割缘66接触金属化通孔壁之前被插入孔中,以便从内向外进行切割。刀头62的向下表面70形成一个推挤表面,用于将切下的废屑(未示出)推离电路板。一个切割挡块76借助未示出的螺丝钉固定至一基板74上。切割挡块76具有多个模口78,它们与金属化通孔对准,当将一相应刀头62从其图6中所示的位置向下压入相配合的金属化通孔时,每一模口的尺寸适于紧密容纳相应刀头62。在刀头62下移时,它切割下电路板和孔中镀层的一部分,并将其推入模口78。随着刀头62继续下移,切下的废屑被推入位于模口78之下的基板74上清理口(未示出),在此废屑被除掉。这便在金属化通孔内形成一个没有杂物的较干净的槽。由金属化通孔24形成的开口中填充有合适的焊料84,如图2、3和5所示。此外,焊料(未示出)还施加于要被焊连至触脚38和40的触垫22。
相对置的触脚38和40之间距稍小于电路板厚度,但各带有一引导端42,以便当连接器移向电路板并与之衔接时,触脚的导引端部分啮合电路板边缘,并以凸轮方式外移,随后沿电路板表面滑动,直至它们啮合其相应的触垫22。此外,随着连接器移向电路板边缘,导柱32进入其相应的开口26并进一步进入金属化通孔24,在此过程中排挤出少量焊料84(图2、3和5)。槽26的宽度适于其与导柱32产生轻微的压配合,以便槽与各导柱之间的摩擦能将连接器10稳固定位,直至焊接工序可以完成。在装配后,此组件要经加热处理使焊料软熔,以便将每个导柱32和触脚38、40焊至其相应的金属化通孔24或触垫22。
注入通孔24的焊料量最好如此控制,即,焊料凹入主表面14、16之内,以便当按上述方式将连接器10装配至电路板上时,穿过金属化通孔24的触脚38和40将不会粘附起通孔内的少量焊料,否则这少量焊料会在相邻两触垫22之间形成一个焊料连条或桥,从而导致短路。
在图7和8中所示的本发明的另一实施例中,作为采用焊料的一种变换,金属化通孔24中设有一个插塞90。此插塞90包括一圆柱状部分92,此部分92的外径适于与金属化通孔24的内径形成轻微压配合。配合压力的大小仅仅足以维持插塞于通孔中,直至连接器10装配至电路板12上。圆柱状部分92具有一个细长的开口94,此开口与圆柱之轴平行。细长开口94由两个直的侧边棱96和98界定,边棱96和98向内弯折且其间隔小于导柱32的厚度。一对相对置的弹性部件100和102分别从插塞90的相对端104和106以与细长开口94完全相反的方式延伸。弹性爪彼此相对内弯并向着细长开口94延伸,尔后每个爪向外弯曲,穿过开口94并进入槽26,如图8所示。这可保证,当插塞90插入金属化通孔24时,细长开口94与槽26对准。两个弹性爪100和102分别形成相对的凸表面108和110,这两个凸表面界定了一个缩颈,并向着细长开口94发散,最后分别止于自由端112和114,这便为导柱32的插入形成导引结构。凸表面108和110之间隔小于导柱32的厚度。如图8所示,在每个弹性爪之内表面上邻近凸表面108和110之处淀积有一个焊料堆116。
当导柱32插进槽26时,它楔入两凸表面108和110之间,并促使它们稍微远离一些。随着继续插进,导柱的锥状端头进入边棱96和98之间并使它们远离,从而使圆柱状部分92贴紧金属化通孔24的内表面。两边棱96和98趋于稍微啮入导柱表面,因此将导柱夹紧并将其固定于槽26中。这可有效地将整个连接器10保持在电路板12上,直至焊接工序结束。当导柱完全插入槽26中时,其尖顶50最好至少靠近圆柱状部分92的后侧内表面,如图9所示。
图10中以平面图的形式示出了插塞90。焊料堆116可采用工业上所知的任一种厚膜印刷技术淀积。在焊料软熔工艺之前,焊料堆中可添加助熔剂。圆柱状部分92是通过未示出的合适的加工设备由矩形部分92′卷制成其圆柱状的,并且向内弯折的边棱界定了细长开口94。应注意,插塞连在两条承载带118上,在将弹性爪100和102形成其弧形以及制成的插塞90插入金属化通孔24之前,承载带118要被切割掉。
本发明的一个重要优点是,以经济的方式在电路板边缘形成了精确定位的开口,此开口延伸至离开边缘表面一定距离设置的金属化通孔,本发明不需在边缘表面钻或冲孔或者冒在这种孔中遗留杂屑的危险,因而降低了制造产品的成本,并提高了产品的可靠性。
可由在此公开的实施例引出的变化和改进也属于本发明的精神和权利要求的范围之内。
Claims (9)
1.一种电路板,其一边缘处装配一个电连接器,此连接器至少包括具有导柱的接触部件,导柱适于连至电路板上的电路布线,电路板具有多个通孔,通孔至少部分地从一个主表面延伸至另一主表面并包括导电材料,导电材料沿通孔侧壁设置并连至电路板上的电路布线,该电路板的特征在于:
所述电路板的多个所述通孔邻近所述边缘且向内与所述边缘隔开一定距离,它们大致垂直于所述主表面,并与所述电路板上的电路布线电连接,它们的中心与所述边缘表面之间距大于其半径;
在所述电路板的所述边缘上形成多个开口,这些开口从所述的两主表面之一至少向另一主表面延伸,其中每个开口相交于一相应的所述通孔,同时每个所述开口沿边缘并平行于主表面的尺寸至少小于所述通孔的直径,

4.根据权利要求3的电路板,其进一步的特征在于,每个所述插塞在其一表面上包括一焊料堆,以便在所述导柱插入所述开口并施加足够的热量时,所述焊料堆熔化和流动,从而将所述导柱焊连于其相应通孔中。

8.如权利要求7所述的方法,其特征在于它在步骤(b)和(d)之间包括下列步骤:
(c1)提供多个插塞,每个插塞具有一圆柱状部分,该部分的尺寸适于与一所述通孔压配合,所述插塞具有一个与其纵轴平行的细长开口并包括一对相对置的弹性部件,该弹性部件具有穿过所述细长开口延伸的自由端;
(c2)将所述插塞插入至少一个所述通孔中,并使所述细长开口与所述开口对准;
其中步骤(d)包括:将一个所述导柱插入一相应的所述开口和所述细长开口中,所述开口与装有所述插塞的一相应的所述通孔相连,所述细长开口位于所述的弹性部件对之间,以便所述导柱与界定所述细长开口的两边棱以及所述弹性部件对压配合。
9.如权利要求7所述的方法,其特征在于形成开口的步骤(b)包括:将一刀具插入一所述通孔,并从所述孔的内侧向所述电路板的所述边缘进行切割。
