Quand clés combustibles d'un degré infé rieur sont employés ou quand la-qualité du combustible contenu dans -le générateur se détériore lorsque sa . quantité. diminue;
Device for saving fuel in hydrocarbon engines. This invention relates to a device for reducing the consumption of gasoline or other liquid fuel used in hydrocarbon engines. It is applicable, for example, to engines; in which the liquid fuel is supplied by gravity, or by pressure, and can be easily applied to existing engines as well as to new ones.
According to the invention, the device comprises the combination, with a liquid fuel container, of a pipe for passing of vapors, starting from the upper part of said container, above the fuel. liquid, contained therein, to go to the engine intake, for the purpose of using the volatile vapors rising from the liquid contained in the container to form at least part of the explosive charge.
In the appended drawing, which represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device, object of the invention: FIG. i is a sectional view of a power supply receptacle chi generator of the device: FIG. 2 is a cross section of the receptacle taken transversely to FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the cylindrical control valve, and the valve preventing backfire; Fig. 4 shows a key variant form of the control valve, and of the relief valve; _. .
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a receptacle, which can be used to supply an auxiliary carburetor by sucking the machine through the steam pipe, when a forced supply is required; Fig. 6 is a schematic view showing this exemplary embodiment applied to the engine of a motor vehicle.
In the drawing, 2 indicates the main fuel tank, which can be placed in any suitable position and is provided with a filler 3.
The main tank - supplies the liquid fuel to a container 5 - of the vapor generator of the device. Near the - upper part of said container 5 -: there is disposed a diaphragm or partition 4 which forms, between said diaphragm and the upper part of the container 5, a vapor compartment-6. At one end of the diaphragm is formed an opening 7 which establishes communication between the lower or liquid compartment 8 of the receptacle 5 and the vapor compartment 6.
In the upper part of the receptacle 5 near one of its ends, passes a hot air inlet pipe 9 which hangs in the liquid compartment 8 and communicates: with one end of the casing A (fig. 6) of the machine. Atmospheric air is admitted to the other end of the housing through the ordinary vacuum tube 11 (fig. 6) or through any other suitable vent. Inside the pipe 9 is a check valve 12 opening towards the container 5. - At the upper part of the container 5 near the pipe 9, is fixed a box with a flashback valve 21. The latter has a connection 22 which communicates with the vapor compartment 6 and is normally closed by a flame return check valve 23.
This valve closes by gravity and is provided with a stem received by a guide 26 depending on the cap 27 which is screwed or otherwise attached to the box 21. Of the backfire valve box; leaves a branch 28 to which is connected a steam pipe 34.
In the vapor compartment 6 very close to the connection: 22, there is an atmospheric air inlet pipe 29 provided with a rotating sleeve 31 having air inlet holes 32 through which an adjustable amount of cold air can be conveniently admitted to the vapor compartment by the driver of the car. - At the bottom of the generator comes from the main fuel container, a liquid supply pipe 36, the outlet of which is wedge mandated by a needle 13, actuated by a float 14 placed in a float chamber 16 located at the bottom. lower part of the container 5, in which the liquid is thus maintained at a constant level. The vapor pipe 34 leads to the vapor inlet branch 37 (Fig. 3) of a control valve box 38.
Inside the branch 37 is a metal gauze dam 39 held by stops 41. This branch 37 has an enlargement 40 connected to the control valve box 38 by a connector 42 provided with a stop valve seat. 43, having a guide 44, pierced with vapor inlet holes 46 which are normally closed by a stop valve 47 whose rod passes through the guide 44 and is provided at its outer end with a collar 49. Between the collar and the seat. valve is a closing spring 52.
The control valve box 38 has a vapor inlet port 53 and a mixture outlet port 54 which has a key mix outlet branch 55 connected to the engine inlet pipe B. Inside the box 38 is a cylindrical control valve 56 having, at one end, a gas discharge port 57 - normally closed by a valve 58. The stem of this valve passes through a guide 61 formed. on a cap 62 attached to the other end of the cylindrical control valve 56. Through this cap, gas exhaust holes 63 are formed and a control wire 64, attached to this cap, passes through it. through a flexible envelope 65 and arrives at a position convenient for actuation by the driver of the car.
A cover 67 closes the outer end of the box 38 and is provided with a central hole for passing the wire 64. Air inlet holes 71 and gas outlet holes 72 are formed through the box. box wall 38.
As it is shown in fig. 11, the gas relief valve. there may have the form of a valve 73 covering a die branch. gas charge 74 which leaves the box 38. This valve is provided with a -stopping limïtateür \ 7'6 which ensures its automatic closing. In some cases the shut-off valve 117.-can. be removed and the vapor inlet connection 37 -on the control valve-box, -as in. fig:
4-. which also shows the control valve in the form of a rotating plug 80 actuated by a rod attached to a lever 81. The plug is provided with a discharge port 101 which establishes permanent communication between the discharge port of the valve. gas 74 and the machine. It also has a vapor inlet 102 which, when open, admits vapors to the machine, and air inlet ports 103 which, while the port 102 is still open, admit. air with vapors.
The generator is fitted with a heating pipe 77, which runs from the exhaust pipe L of the machine and is controlled by a valve 78 (fig. 6) located on the front panel. Instead of the above, suitable electric heaters can be employed.
In operation, the control valve 56 is partially open, so that the suction of the motor opens the valve 12 and, forms an air current, through the housing and the pipe 9, into the liquid compartment. 8 of the container 5 above the com-. bustible liquid contained therein. This liquid is brought to the container 5, either by gravity or by the suction of the motor, through the supply pipe 36, which pipe is closed by the needle 13 when the liquid contained in the container 5 reaches a predetermined level. A mass of liquid of comparatively small volume, but with a large surface area, is thus maintained inside the container 5.
As the sucked air passes through the crankcase of the engine, it is heated and also enriched by contact with the oil and vapors therein, so that it enters the generator in a highly desirable form. . As this air passes over the extended surface of the liquid fuel contained in the container 5, it becomes impregnated with the volatile vapors which rise from it and, after having passed around the end of the diaphragm and circulated in the vapor compartment it escapes through the valve 23 into the vapor pipe.
By adjusting the sleeve 31, the vapors can be mixed with cold air as desired before leaving the steam room, which regulates the strength of the combustible vapors. The vapors and the air then pass, through the vapor pipe 34, to the inlet connection 37 of the control valve box 38. The shut-off valve 47, also being opened by the suction of the engine, allows gas to pass through holes 46 at the control valve.
The control valve, which is operated by hand by the driver, opens the valve inlet port 53 of the box 38 and also allows an additional influx of atmospheric air to be admitted through the inlet holes. 71, which makes it possible that the force of the explosive mixture entering the machine is easily varied or the arrival entirely interrupted during operation. The mixture, after passing through the control valve, escapes through the mixture outlet connection 55 into the machine, where it forms the explosive charge.
In the event that the machine has flashbacks, the relief valve 58 or 73 opens automatically and allows the combustion gases to escape; either through holes 63 and 72, or through the discharge connection 74 of the control valve box. The shut-off valve 47 and the metal gauze 39 prevent the effects of backfire from reaching the generator, while the backfire valve 23 placed on it acts as an additional protection in this regard. .
When fuels of a lower degree are used or when the quality of the fuel contained in the generator deteriorates when its. amount. decreases;
the tap 78 (fig, 6) is open to allow hot gases from the exhaust pipe to pass through the heating pipe. Fig. 77, thus heating the fuel contained in the generator and increasing the volatility and combustibility of the vapors passing from the generator to the machine.
It has been recognized in practice that by passing the heated air from the crankcase to the generator and from there to the suction pipe, as described above, the engine can be operated fully with the fans and air without the use of a carburetor, the device which has just been described then being used alone to supply the engine.
But, even without thus previously heating the air; eminently satisfactory results can be obtained by simply drawing atmospheric air over the liquid fuel and thence into the machine. In the latter case, it is possible to use a carburettor D to which the liquid fuel is supplied either from the main see-reser or from the receptacle 5 and operating - as an auxiliary to the supply device described.
In the event that the car burator is fed from a main tank which is so arranged that a forced feed is necessary, the suction of the machine through the pipe to. vapors can be used for this purpose instead of the usual pressure feed connections. There is shown in FIG. 5 an arrangement allowing simultaneous use of the device described above and a carburetor of conventional construction. In this fig. 5; '79 inclines a receptacle mounted at a higher level than the carburetor, and divided by a partition 82 into a lower or liquid compartment 83 and an upper or vapor compartment 84.
The liquid compartment 83 is provided with a liquid inlet connection 94 which is connected to a supply pipe 85 from the main tank. The liquid compartment is also provided with a liquid outlet connection 86 which is connected by a water supply hose 87. A. The interior of the liquid housing is a float 88 surrounding a rod 89 the lower end of which moves in a guide 91. The upper end of the rod 89 has a valve 92 on it which opens and closes. an orifice 93 formed through the partition 82. The vapor compartment 84 is provided with a vapor inlet connection 94 and a vapor outlet connection. 96, which connections are connected to pipe 34.
Thus, instead of the liquid being forced out of the main tank under pressure, as in the ordinary pressure feed system, it is sucked from the main tank, through the feed pipe 85, into the compartment. liquid 83 by the suction of the motor through the vapor pipe and the orifice 93. When the liquid contained in the compartment 83 fills it and the float rises, the orifice 93 is closed by the valve 92 The liquid fuel contained in compartment 83 then arrives through pipe 87 to the carburetor and when said compartment empties, the stream descends again and opens orifice 93 to fill the receptacle.
It will, of course, be clearly caught that the use of two separate containers, such as the main tank and the container 5, is in no way essential. The vessel 5 can be completely removed and the heated atmospheric Cu air which enters through the pipe 9 can be drawn directly into the upper part of the main tank which will then be fitted with accessories 21 and 29 and, if desired, diaphragm 4 too. On the other hand, the receptacle 5 can be organized to take the place of the main reservoir, in which case the needle 13 and the supply pipe 36 will be eliminated and the receptacle 5 charged with liquid through the filling device 95. the ordinary way.
This will not, of course, cause the liquid to be kept at a constant level in the container 5, but as long as the surface of the liquid is kept below the end of the air inlet pipe 9, the 5 results will not be greatly affected.
