The present invention relates to the sanitary field, and more particularly to its sector which deals with the disposal with preventive sterilization of different types of potentially infected waste such as (but not limited to) hospital waste.
Known problems that make hospital waste sterilization operations problematic are many and among these the most important concern the danger and the cost of handling waste before and after treatment, the ease with which known machines, such as shredders or similar are subject to jams that interrupt the sterilization cycle before the end with all the problems inherent in this possibility, the long duration of the cycles also due to the fact that the waste must first be heated and then cooled before being discharged and, again, the need for some systems to add plastic materials added to waste in order to be able to treat them, with the related increase in costs.
Normally, special expensive containers are used which, after being used to spill the waste in the treatment machines, must in turn be washed and sterilized before they can be reused and then transported to the places of use with considerable costs. Even the collection and transport of treated waste present problems of size and therefore cost.
The inventor of the process according to the invention has obtained the avoidance of all the drawbacks listed above, also realizing significant savings on the total disposal costs. By means of the process in question, which can be carried out in a special easy-to-use plant, remarkable results are simultaneously achieved in the field of operator safety and the environment, in hygiene and cleaning as well as in the economic one, given the low costs of operation and maintenance of said plant.
The object of the present invention is in fact constituted by a process for the sterilization and elimination of potentially infected waste characterized by the characterizing part of the attached claim 1.
Also part of the invention is a system designed so as to be able to carry out the said process.
A more detailed description of the process of the invention will now be performed, and in doing so reference will also be made to the attached drawings, in which a preferred embodiment of a plant suitable for the implementation of said process is illustrated.
These drawings represent: - in fig. 1 is a diagram of the example of a plant suitable for carrying out the process of the invention; - in fig. 2 is a perspective view of a container designed to house several containers containing the waste to be treated; - in fig. 3 the longitudinal section of the chamber cavity in which the waste is crushed and sterilized; - in fig. 4 is a perspective view of a propeller consisting of three cutting blades with vertical deflector blades applied on them; - in fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail of the system relating to two counter-rotating coaxial propellers composed of three cutting blades which are housed in the lower end of the chamber.
Consider first the fig. 1, in which the said embodiment of a plant suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is represented.
After the potentially infected waste has been placed inside special containers 1n, these are conveyed, for example through a conveyor belt 4, schematically represented by the dotted arrow A, towards an almost cylindrical container 5, into which they are introduced neatly by means of a special plant (not shown) based on known criteria used for picking, handling and depositing packages of goods, parcels and the like according to pre-established methods.
It is convenient to superimpose several containers 1n within different radial sectors 5s, as is better represented in fig. 2, so that light and handy containers can be used.
Always by means of known movement systems, the container 5 is axially lowered (see arrows B) into a chamber 2 which, after being opened for the introduction of the container 5, is hermetically closed.
Near the lower end 2f of said chamber 2 there is a system made up of several coaxial multi-blade cutting propellers 6, 7 which counter-rotate and crush both the containers 1n and the waste they contain.
The temperature inside the chamber 2 is kept between ca. 100 and ca. 200 DEG C for the entire duration of the crushing treatment when necessary also by means of the heat input given by resistors housed in the walls of chamber 2 or by diathermic oil circulation pipes also housed in cavities formed in said walls of chamber 2.
Since the friction caused by the crushing work of the containers 1n and of the waste carried out by said cutting propellers 6, 7 also generates heat, the inventor suggests installing a device that can vary both the power of the thermal system and that absorbed by the cutting propellers 6, 7 as a function of the temperature reigning in the chamber, decreasing for example the rotation speed of these, and therefore the thermal power generated by the frictions, when in the chamber itself the temperature tends to exceed the established limit of for example approx. 200 DEG C, and increasing it when instead this temperature tends to fall below, for example, 150 DEG C.
In this way, the temperature in the chamber is maintained within a range of values programmed to effect the total destruction of protein substances, performing an effective sterilization, without unnecessary waste of energy.
The said counter-rotating multi-blade propellers 6, 7 (see figs. 4 and 5) are preferably each composed of three horizontal cutting blades 6t, 7t bearing on both their faces one or more further vertical deflector blades 11v which, in addition to collaborate in the crushing work, thanks to their orientation, they push the fragments of the receptacles and waste towards the center of chamber 2, in order to maintain them and constantly direct them to the area where the different cutting surfaces carry out their demolition work. At the same time the 12v ribs, applied on the internal walls of the cavity 2c of the chamber 2, oppose the ebbing of the material upwards thanks to their predetermined inclination, adjustable from the outside of the chamber 2.
Since it is known that, in sterilization treatments, the effectiveness of the treatments themselves is greater if they occur in a humid atmosphere, the inventor has also planned to keep the humidity rate inside the chamber under control, by introducing the superheated steam produced from a steam generator 10 by means of a conduit 10v which flows into the lower part 2f of the chamber 2, or by taking it through a conduit 8r, sending it to a condenser 24, when the vapor concentration is too high.
It is good to note that a certain amount of steam can be introduced into chamber 2 before or just after its hermetic closure, in order to avoid any explosions that could occur due to the strong thermal shock to which the waste contained in the containers is exposed 1n and the containers themselves, which are made of plastic material.
When it is necessary to increase the humidity rate inside chamber 2 without increasing the temperature, or rather reducing it, the inventor plans to introduce water through one or more ducts 8r, also using the water obtained as said by condensation of the steam extracted from the room 2.
Through said ducts 8r it is also possible to introduce into the chamber 2 chemical substances, such as sodium hypochlorite or the like contained in a special tank 11, pure or mixed with water, so as to maximize the sterilization action exerted by the process.
After a predetermined treatment period, sufficient to reduce the containers 1n and the waste contained in them into fragments constituting a granulate of desired size, this granulate is expelled by the same pressure prevailing in the chamber 2, kept below approx. 3 bar, when the lower part 2f which can be opened of the latter (preferably inclined at an angle a with respect to the horizontal) is opened, and is sent, when necessary also with the complementary help of an aspirator 9, to a compactor device 3 of a known type which, thanks to the high temperature of the granulate, thermoplastically compacts it into loaves 20 of the desired shape and size. These loaves 20 can then be sent for recycling or destruction, depending on the case and their specific composition.
If you have the foresight to carry out the operations of conveying it and arranging the containers of a container at the same time used by the system to treat the material contained in the chamber and sending it to the said compaction device, perfect synchronism is obtained between the different stages of the procedure, with a minimum duration of the operating cycle and without loss of time.
The plant described up to now and represented in the drawings, as mentioned, is only a preferred example of a possible realization of a plant suitable for implementing the process of the invention, a process which in turn can be carried out in different ways but always deriving from the concepts expressed in the attached claim 1.
It is advantageous and advisable to enslave the functioning of all the components of a system to a centralized computer 13 in order to constantly monitor the variables involved, i.e. temperature, pressure and synchronism between the various operations.
Another precaution envisaged by the inventor is that of realizing said chamber 2 with at least one through hole 14 on one of its walls (see in this regard fig. 3) suitable to allow the watertight insertion of a perforated basket 15 which houses inside one or more known capsules, containing a charge of bacteria which signal the efficiency of the sterilization performed (for example a charge of bacilli of the genus stearotermophylus or of anologic types).
In this way, the effectiveness of the treatment performed can be easily and quickly checked without having to mix the capsules with the waste fragments. It should be noted that the term "walls" of chamber 2 must be understood in the most general sense, also including its cover.
