In a mechanical timepiece comprising a balance-spring system with an anchor escapement of the Swiss type, the period of oscillation of the balance is given by the formula
EMI1.1
where I is the main moment of inertia of the balance and C the moment of recall of the elastic force of the balance spring.
If this ratio is constant, the movement is isochronous.
Unfortunately, when the part is running, many factors, which depend in particular on the positions of the regulating system, modify the value of the ratio
EMI2.1
One of the most important factors is the frictional forces, in particular those which act on the pendulum pivots. These friction forces cause DELTA T variations of the pendulum's oscillation period T.
To reduce these differences, the watchmaker Breguet invented the tourbillon, which consists of housing the organs of the regulating system in a cage, coaxial with the balance, so that the differences are compensated for at least partially during random movements of the part.
The object of the present invention is to further reduce the sum of DELTA T deviations during a relatively long time interval, for example 24 hours, and thus improve the accuracy of the part.
To this end, the regulating system is housed in a cage and the part comprises a mechanism imparting to this cage a movement during which all the material points of the regulating system describe trajectories in a three-dimensional space.
The attached drawing shows, schematically and by way of nonlimiting example, a wristwatch constituting an embodiment of the object of the invention.
For simplicity, only the cage and its drive mechanism are shown, as well as part of the regulating system.
The single figure of the drawing is a section through the common axis A1 of the cage and of the pendulum. The regulating system of the wristwatch, comprising the balance 10 and the escapement pinion 11, is housed in a cage 12, the upper bridge 13 of which has a toothed crown 14.
This cage 12 is rotatably attached to a plate (platform) 15 which is integral with the second wheel 16 which meshes with the pinion 11.
The plate 15 is rotatably mounted between two glazing stones 17 and 18 arranged in housings provided for this purpose, respectively in the hub 19 of two paired toothed wheels 20 and 21, and in the hub 22 of a toothed wheel 23.
The three wheels 20, 21 and 23 have a common axis A2 intersecting the axis A1 perpendicularly.
The twin wheels 20-21 can rotate in a ball bearing 24, while the hub 22 is driven into a housing of a support 25. The bearing 24 and the support 25 are mounted at diametrically opposite points of a drive wheel 26 which rotates, by means of a ball bearing 27, in a ring 28 fixed on the bottom of the box, and which carries a circular rack 29 on which the wheel 20 is supported.
The drive wheel 26 permanently exerts an action on the wheel 20 which tends to rotate it around its axis A2.
Assuming that nothing prevents the wheel 26 from rotating freely around the axis A1, this rotation would communicate to the assembly 12-15, via the rack 29 and the wheel 20, the following movements:
a rotation about the axis A1, by meshing of the wheel 21 and the crown 14,
a rotation about the axis A2, by meshing at two diametrically opposite points, of the crown 14 with, on the one hand, the wheel 21, and, on the other hand, the fixed wheel 23.
The movement resulting from these two rotations which take place practically simultaneously extends in a three-dimensional space with respect to a fixed reference system.
During this resulting movement, all the points of the regulating system pass through positions corresponding to vertical and horizontal positions of the watch. By abandoning the above hypothesis, the exhaust pinion 11 makes this resulting movement intermittent in that it can only take place during the fall of the escape wheel. During its rotation, the pinion 11, meshing with the seconds wheel 16, describes an epicyclic trajectory.
The random movements of the watch help bring the sum of DELTA T deviations towards zero during an extended time interval.
We know, in fact, that the DELTA T step deviations, that is to say the Tmean - T can be positive or negative depending on the positions of the watch, which means that the sum of these DELTA T deviations can be zero by compensation for the sum of DELTA Tp positive deviations and the sum of DELTA Tn negative deviations.
The movements of the cage of the part according to the invention therefore tend the total sum of the DELTA T deviations towards zero.
It will also be noted that the disturbances in the running of the watch caused in the drive mechanism at the level of the gears, on the one hand, and of the tourbillons and their bearings on the other hand, when the contact points move, for example at moment of the passage of the assembly 12-15 by unstable equilibrium positions, will compensate, at least partially in time, thanks to the movement of this assembly.
The invention is obviously not limited to the embodiment described. In particular, it can be applied to other timepieces than wristwatches.
Furthermore, the drive mechanism of the cage may be different from that described and shown.
