Description
DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a method and a composition intended for protecting certain selected areas or surfaces from damage caused by birds, in particular woodpeckers. More specifically, it relates to a process for reducing or preventing damage caused by picks to wooden poles and the like used for public services. It is defined in claims 1 and 6.
Parmi les moyens employés, on mentionne les suivants : Spike damage to wooden poles and braces has been a problem for the public service industry for many years. Not only is the damage costly, but the holes in the posts create weakening effects in the posts, at the same time making the work of the linemen who have to climb these posts dangerous. The extent of this damage is more extensive than is commonly understood, and it has been estimated that damage resulting from chipping by picks is more costly than that caused by wind, lightning and hail combined. The seriousness of the peak damage problem has long attracted attention, and there are many reports in the literature relating to schemes for which public service companies have spent very large sums to try to resolve such a problem. Among the means used, the following are mentioned:
1) lier le tronçon troué de vieux poteaux aux sommets de poteaux neufs, ou laisser les vieux poteaux liés à des poteaux neufs; 1) link the perforated section of old posts to the new post tops, or leave the old posts tied to new posts;
cela repose sur la théorie selon laquelle les oiseaux préfèrent le bois plus vieux au bois neuf fraîchement créosoté; en fait, ce n'est pas le cas; this is based on the theory that birds prefer older wood to freshly creosoted new wood; in fact, this is not the case;
2) attacher aux poteaux des banderoles de flanelle rouge et des bandes métalliques en forme d'ailettes; de tels moyens repoussent les oiseaux temporairement, apparemment jusqu'à ce qu'ils s'aperçoivent que ces dispositifs sont inoffensifs; 2) attach banners of red flannel and metal strips in the shape of fins to the posts; such means temporarily repel birds, apparently until they realize that these devices are harmless;
3) entourer les poteaux d'un tissu à mailles du genre toile métallique ou de feuilles diverses, par exemple de feuilles en matière plastique; cela s'avère parfaitement inefficace, en ce sens que les pics font facilement de gros trous dans la toile pour atteindre le bois; le fait d'entourer les poteaux par un autre matériau ne donne aucun résultat pour la même raison; 3) surround the posts with a mesh fabric such as metallic canvas or various sheets, for example plastic sheets; this proves perfectly ineffective, in the sense that the picks easily make large holes in the canvas to reach the wood; surrounding the posts with another material does not work for the same reason;
4) appliquer des produits chimiques à propriétés répulsives. 4) apply chemicals with repellent properties.
It has been sought for a long time to solve this problem by simply applying a repellant chemical to the posts, making it possible to prevent the peaks from pecking at the posts. It has been noted that hundreds of different chemicals have been tried, but none have been entirely satisfactory for a variety of reasons, including inadequate repellency or, if the repellency was sufficient, the product could not be held in place in effective amounts over extended periods of time.
Le composé à appliquer présente la formule suivante: According to the invention, it is intended to apply to an area or a surface from which the birds must be kept away, a chemical compound in an amount effective to repel these birds. The compound to be applied has the following formula:
The preferred chemical compound is isophorone which, technically, is 3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-one-1. The specific compound corresponds to the general compound in which the Rs are all methyl groups. Its physical properties are well known and it is readily available commercially. Although it is considered to be somewhat toxic to humans, contact with skin and eyes should be avoided, it is not considered to present a dangerous industrial risk, due to its low vapor pressure, about 0.2 mm at 20 ° C.
The repellant can be applied according to the invention in the form of a relatively pure compound, or in combination with a support or other inert material. Solvents, emulsions or carriers which are substantially inert to the compound can be used. As examples of supports constituted by solvents which can be optionally used, various hydrocarbon fractions are mentioned, such as naphtha solvents. Since this ketone product is only slightly soluble in water, an aqueous emulsion can be prepared using suitable emulsifiers or wetting agents, the emulsion being applied to the areas where it is necessary to '' keep the birds away. The compound can also be absorbed onto suitable solid supports such as clays of various types, and applied in the form of a powder, preferably with an adhesive to hold the support in place.
Une attaque d'une telle surface par un pic ou analogue entraînera toutefois la rupture Although the compound has a low vapor pressure and has a substantially effective shelf life, even when applied with continuous exposure to the atmosphere, it may be advantageous to apply it so that it is substantially isolated from the atmosphere to further increase the efficiency of its lifespan. To this end, an effective method consists in encapsulating the compound by using methods well known in the encapsulation technique. The capsules formed, comprising separate portions of the compound enclosed in insoluble impermeable envelopes, can be applied, in any desired manner, to a selected area or surface. For example, the capsules can be mixed with an adhesive or a paint, and applied to the surface to be protected. The compound is thus protected from the atmosphere, so that the vaporization is substantially eliminated and the capsules remain in place for long periods. An attack on such a surface by a peak or the like will however lead to rupture

d'au moins un certain nombre de capsules, le composé se trouvant ainsi libéré pour jouer son rôle d'agent répulsif. at least a certain number of capsules, the compound thus being released to play its role of repellant.
The compound can also be applied mixed with a suitable coating product, such as a latex paint, which hardens so as to enclose the compound inside the cured coating and to substantially insulate it from the atmosphere.
The amount of ketone compound to be applied should be sufficient to repel birds, especially woodpeckers, for an extended period. Because the compound has very low volatility, it remains in place for long periods of time during which its repellency is effective. The amount to be used can vary over a wide range, depending on the mode of application, the desired period of effectiveness and other factors. Usually an amount between 14.17 g and 84.75 g of the compound will be used, for 929 cm 2 of surface. If the compound is encapsulated, the lower limit of the extent may be, for example, 2.83 g per 929 cm 2 of surface. The high quantities of the range are usually adjusted according to economic imperatives.
Exemple I: M Example I: M
We built an aviary inside which we housed two adult woodpeckers, of so-called "golden face" species. A control post (untreated) was placed in the aviary, at the same time as the birds were released inside, so that the birds could begin to peck and claim their territory. After a packaging period of about 6 months, a new pole of the kind used for the distribution of electrical energy, impregnated with creosote, was placed in the aviary, one half of the upper half being coated with isophorone , the other half remaining without being painted. About 100 cm3 of isophorone was used over an area of about 500 cm2. The night after the initial application, there was a heavy rainfall and, 2 days later, an additional 50 cm3 of isophorone was applied to the test area.
During the trial period, the woodpeckers were fed with food rations consisting of live mealworms (worms, larvae and beetles), dumplings for laying hens and dumplings for dogs. Chicken and dog meatballs were given at discretion, and mealworms were provided daily (50 to 100 for each bird) in addition to the ration given at discretion.
No activity was noted on either side (treated or untreated) of the post tested until November. During the months of November to March, the untreated side of the post under test was vigorously attacked by the peaks which made numerous holes in it. During this same period, the treated face of the post tested remained practically healthy and no damage was observed beyond the limit of the treated section and the untreated section of the post.
The preferred orientation was tested by rotating the posts 90 °, then 180 °. No orientation preference was observed.
Exemple II: Example II:
The repellency of isophorone in a usual young bird enclosure was observed by placing in a tray of the grain on which isophorone had been sprayed until the grain was moistened and, in another tray, grain not coated with isophorone. Young birds easily ate the uncoated grain, but did not eat the treated grain; no apparent harmful effect was observed, furthermore, from the fact that the birds had slightly pecked the treated grain. It was observed that avoiding the grain appeared to occur when the tongue came into contact with the treated grain.
