BESCHREIBUNG
J.D. Silverstein et al. in Int. J. Electronica 53 (6), S.
Fig. 1 in einem Ausführungsbeispiel die geometrische Anordnung der Helmholtzspulen, der Resonatoren und des Abschirmkörpers innerhalb eines Gyroklystrons nach der Erfindung;
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a quasi-optical gyro klystron according to the preamble of claim 1. Such a gyro klystron is e.g. known from the article by A. Bondeson et al. in Int. J. Electronics 53 (6), pp. 547-553 (1982).
For the cyclotron resonance heating of plasmas in controlled nuclear fusion or radar and microwave applications, effective and powerful microwave sources are required.
The gyrotron has been proposed variously for generating microwaves with wavelengths around and above 1 cm.
In such a gyrotron, the electrons of an energy-rich electron beam are forced to gyrate by a strong magnetic field parallel to the beam. The beam of the electrons revolving with a defined cyclotron frequency is sent through an electromagnetic cavity resonator of suitable dimensions and there excites electromagnetic vibrations of the corresponding frequency, which can be coupled out of the resonator.
In order to generate smaller wavelengths in the millimeter range, an open quasi-optical resonator made of two opposing confocal mirrors is used instead of the cavity resonator. In this case, we speak of a quasi-optical gyrotron.
As an alternative to the quasi-optical gyrotron, a quasi-optical gyro klystron can be used to generate millimeter waves, which is described in the publication mentioned at the beginning, and differs from the quasi-optical gyrotron in that instead of one quasi-optical resonator, two corresponding resonators are along the beam axis are arranged and include a drift zone.
The incoming electron beam first crosses the first, so-called prebunching resonator, in which the electrons are accelerated or braked to different relative speeds by interaction with an alternating electromagnetic field.
Due to the different relative speeds, electron groups (bunches) are formed in a known manner when passing through the subsequent drift zone, which then interact with millimeter waves in the second resonator, which in turn can be coupled out of the resonator.
While in the first described gyrotron with cavity resonator, the dimensions of the resonator and the associated interaction zone are comparatively small [see e.g. J.D. Silverstein et al. in Int. J. Electronica 53 (6), p.
539-546 (1982)], and therefore the magnetic field with its precisely defined field profile along the beam axis can be generated in a simple manner by means of a solenoid, dimensions which are approximately 100 times larger occur in the quasi-optical resonators perpendicular to the axis are. The use of a solenoid for generating magnetic fields is therefore in this case associated with an unacceptably high outlay because of the large coil interior required.
Additional difficulties arise from the fact that not only must a magnetic field of several Tesla be provided for a large volume, but also that the magnetic field strength must have a precisely defined course along the beam axis, so that suitable conditions for the resonators and the drift zone gyrating electrons exist.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a quasi-optical gyro-klystron which requires comparatively simple means to generate the large-volume, precisely defined magnetic field.
The object is achieved in a gyro klystron of the type mentioned by the features from the characterizing part of claim 1.
The essence of the invention is to provide a pair of ring-shaped coils in a Helmholtz arrangement for the large-volume magnetic field generation and to produce the defined magnetic field profile along the klystron axis by means of a suitable shielding body, which is arranged within the magnetic field coils in the region of the drift zone and has a relative permeability significantly greater than 1 has.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the shielding body is made of soft iron and has the shape of a hollow cylinder, the axis of which coincides with the klystron axis and which surrounds the drift zone.
The invention will now be explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment in connection with the drawing. Show it:
1 shows in an exemplary embodiment the geometric arrangement of the Helmholtz coils, the resonators and the shielding body within a gyro-klystron according to the invention;
2 shows the influence of an exemplary shielding body on the magnetic field within the gyro-klystron.
In Fig. 1 an embodiment of the arrangement of the essential parts of a gyro klystron according to the invention is shown. 1 in this figure denotes the klystron axis, which is also the beam axis of the electron beam which, generated by an electron gun (not shown), crosses the klystron from left to right and initially enters a first resonator 11, which is provided by two opposing resonator mirrors 6 and 7 is formed and represents an open, quasi-optical resonator.
The first resonator 11, which can also be referred to as a prebunching resonator because it is intended for generating electron bunches, has, for example, a mirror spacing between the resonator mirrors 6 and 7 of approximately 5 cm, and forms a prebunching zone a in which the electrons of the electron beam over a length of, for example 2 cm interact with a suitable electromagnetic field.
As a result of this interaction, the various electrons of the electron beam are partially accelerated and partially decelerated, depending on the phase relationship between the cyclotron orbit and the electromagnetic wave. In a drift zone b adjoining the prebunching zone a, which for example has a length of 10 cm, the electron groups (bunches) then form due to the previous interaction and enter a second resonator 12.
Like the first resonator 11, the second resonator 12 is designed as an open, quasi-optical resonator, which likewise consists of two opposing resonator mirrors 4 and 5, which preferably have a mirror spacing of approximately 50 cm.
The second resonator 12 represents an extraction zone c, in which the electron groups interact with an electromagnetic millimeter wave, which can be coupled out of the resonator. The actual interaction takes place within the second resonator 12 in an approximately 6-8 cm long interaction zone.
The gyration of the electrons around the klystron axis 1 is caused by a strong magnetic field with a magnetic induction of several tesla, which is generated by two ring-shaped magnetic field coils 2 and 3, which are arranged in a so-called Helmholtz arrangement one behind the other along the klystron axis 1 and the two Include resonators 11 and 12 and drift zone b. The arrangement of two identical ring-shaped coils with radius r on a common axis at a distance r is known as the Helmholtz arrangement.
The two magnetic field coils 2 and 3 are preferably designed as superconducting coils, which are accommodated in corresponding cryotechnical coil containers 9 and 10 through which helium flows. Coil containers 9 and 10, resonators 11 and 12 and the electron gun (not shown) are naturally accommodated in a vacuum chamber in order to ensure the unhindered propagation of the electron beam.
The magnetic induction B generated by the magnetic field coils 2 and 3 in the area of the klystron axis 1 leads to a non-relativistic cyclone frequency Q of the rotating electrons of (1) Q = (e / me) B with the electron charge e and the non-relativistic electron mass me .
For proper functioning of the gyro-klystron, it is now necessary that the induction B along the klystron axis 1 takes a precisely defined course or, in other words, that the ratio of the cyclone frequency Q to the frequency Q of the electromagnetic wave in the resonators 11 and 12 along the klystron axis 1 assumes precisely defined values. These defined values are typically: (1) B / o = 1.17 at the boundary between prebunching zone a and drift zone b; (2) Q / co = 1.137 in the middle of drift zone b; (3) Q / E3 = 1.13 at the beginning of extraction zone c; and (4) n / o = 1.04 at the end of the extraction zone c.
Since the magnetic field coils 2 and 3 have a correspondingly large bore due to the lateral dimensions of the second resonator 12 in the order of magnitude of 50 cm (FIG. 1), the required precise coordination of the B profile along the klystron axis 1 is in accordance with the conditions (1) to (4) cannot be achieved by the magnetic field coils 2 and 3 alone, since the Helmholtz arrangement in this form only allows linear, slow changes in the B field profile to be achieved.
For the precise adjustment of the induction curve, a shielding body 8 is therefore provided in the area of the drift zone b, which locally influences the magnetic field distribution and is geometrically designed and arranged such that the conditions (1) to (4) can be met by means of the magnetic field coils 2 and 3 .
Furthermore, it is advantageous to provide an independently adjustable power supply for each of the magnetic field coils 2 and 3, so that the separate setting of the magnetic fields of the individual coils makes it even easier and more precise to achieve a predetermined field profile.
According to a preferred exemplary embodiment, the shielding body 8 is rotationally symmetrical with respect to the klystron axis 1, and is in particular designed as a hollow cylinder which largely surrounds the drift zone b with the continuous electron beam.
The shielding body 8 consists of a material of high relative permeability, preferably soft iron. Due to its magnetic properties, it weakens the magnetic field in the area it encloses, while the field distribution outside the body remains largely unaffected.
2 shows the influence of a hollow cylinder made of soft iron on the axial component Bz of the magnetic induction along the klystron axis as an example. The position of the cylinder is drawn as a hatched rectangle, the axis of abscissa coinciding with the cylinder axis. The hollow cylinder has a length of 1 = 10 cm, an inner radius r = 5 cm and an outer radius ra = 10 cm.
The curves of the axial induction Bz are entered on the axis (curves A) and outside the hollow cylinder at a radius of 28 cm from the axis (curves B), each without (solid) and with (dashed) shielding body. The abscissa is divided into 2 cm steps without a special reference point.
It can be seen from FIG. 2 that the influence of the shielding body is significantly greater in the region near the axis (curves A) than in the outer space away from the axis (curves B). Nevertheless, the maximum change in induction B by the shielding body is comparatively small because the soft iron material is saturated with the very high induction of more than 4 Tesla.
However, the shape of the shielding body according to the invention is not limited to the hollow cylinder of the exemplary embodiment. It is entirely within the scope of the invention to provide other rotationally symmetrical shielding bodies, the dimensions and geometry of which are designed using known standard field calculation methods in such a way that the required field profiles along the klystron axis arise.
Likewise, instead of the soft iron mentioned, other materials can be used which have a sufficiently large influence on the magnetic induction, i.e. have a sufficiently high relative permeability.
Overall, the invention provides a quasi-optical gyro klystron in which the necessary magnetic field distribution is achieved with comparatively simple means.
