Abstract

A ring (2) of sintered aluminium oxide is fastened on a planar round plate (6) of sapphire in such a way that the ring stands up from the plate in the axial direction. An oxide mixture is used as the binder between the transparent plate and the ring. A dry blend comprising about 45 % by weight zinc oxide powder of an average particle diameter of 0.5 mu m and approximately 55 % by weight alpha -aluminium oxide powder of an average particle diameter of 0.3 mu m is prepared. 10 g of this dry blend are suspended in 90 g of ethyleneglycol monomethylether. The contact surface of the ring is evenly coated with this paste. The layer thickness is at most 2.5 mu m. The coated ring and the polished plate of sapphire are heated separately to 950 to 1000 DEG C. Thereafter, the ring is exactly centred with respect to the plate and pressed together for 20 minutes under a pressure of 1000 kg/cm<2>. The ceramic bond between the ring and the plate obtained in this way has an adhesive strength of more than 800 kg/cm<2>. It is therefore possible to fasten just the ring of the watch-glass thus obtained on a watch casing, without having to fear that the connection between the ring and the plate may come apart. <IMAGE>
