fig. 1.

The cooling of plastic tubes or profiles formed by extrusion in apparatuses operating at the highest speeds which it is possible to obtain at present, presents certain difficulties, because, to avoid an excessive extension of the cooling tanks , we try to activate heat exchanges as much as possible. However, depending on the nature of the plastic material constituting the tubes or profiles, and depending on the type of containers that are used, there are then various obstacles.
The simplest arrangement is to use open containers. However, the tube or the profile that is still malleable due to the high temperature at which it enters the tank risks being crushed under the effect of the water pressure or deforming. To remedy this drawback, a plug is placed inside the tube and air is blown through the extrusion head in order to maintain in the tube a pressure greater than the hydrostatic pressure of the water. This arrangement complicates the installation and by immobilizing hot air inside the tube, hinders rapid cooling. It is therefore preferably used at least in the region immediately adjacent to the extrusion head of the closed tanks in which a slight vacuum is maintained by means of a vacuum pump.
The inlet opening of the tube in the tank is equipped with a member called a calibrator against the inside wall of which the still malleable plastic tube is pressed. It is the calibrator that gives the tube its final shape.
However, this arrangement still has drawbacks, especially in the case of the shaping of tubes or profiles of a hard material such as rigid polyethylene or polypropylene.
Indeed, air enters the tank with the tube through the calibrator, and on the other hand, depending on the quality of the water, the air it retains in suspension is released under the action of vacuum , and attaches to the outer surface of the tube in the form of bubbles which, once the cooling is complete, leave visible traces or even hollow marks, so that the quality of the tube leaves something to be desired.
In the case of flexible plastic tubes or / and with very thin walls, the use of a vacuum tank at the outlet of the extruder has the consequence that the tube tends to rise to the free level of the water under the effect of the push of the water, so that it deforms. As the deformation is fixed by cooling, the quality of the tube also leaves something to be desired.
However, noting that the static cooling method applied until then consisted of passing the tube through a body of stagnant water or the renewal of which was done sufficiently slowly to avoid any significant flow inside the tank, we s realized that it was possible to overcome these various drawbacks by applying a dynamic cooling method.
The subject of the present invention is a method of cooling a plastic tube or profile leaving an extrusion head and penetrating through a calibrator into a vacuum tank, characterized in that a stream of fluid is formed refrigerant of tubular shape, this current is directed around the tube or profiled coaxially to that in the opposite direction of its movement and it is led to a zone of the tank located in the vicinity of the calibrator.
It also relates to a device for implementing the method, characterized in that it comprises a guide member of tubular shape surrounding the tube or profile and having a downstream end located in the tank in the vicinity of the calibrator, a diaphragm of dimensions greater than the tube or profile, integral with the other end of the guide member, an upstream chamber adjacent to the diaphragm and containing coolant and means for maintaining from the diaphragm to the downstream end of the guide member a flow of refrigerant fluid having rectilinear threads parallel to the axis of the tube or profile.
The features of the invention will emerge from the description which follows, given by way of example, with reference to the appended drawings which relate to two different embodiments of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of a first embodiment of the device for implementing the invention.
It also illustrates a form of implementation of the method, and
fig. 2 is a partial sectional view similar to FIG. 1 showing a second embodiment of the device and illustrating a second embodiment of the method of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows in section a first vacuum cooling tank 1 traversed longitudinally by a tube 2 emerging from an extrusion head 3. This extrusion head can be a longitudinal or transverse head. The tube 2 can be formed in one operation or in several operations taking place one after the other. In the example described, it will be considered that the tube 2 of circular section is made of rigid polyethylene. Its section could however be different from a circular ring. Instead of a tube, it could also be a section of section closed on itself. The tank 1 is a usual tank closed by a cover 4 and in which a vacuum pump (not shown) sucking up by a suction pipe 5, maintains a vacuum of set value.
At the entrance to the tank is arranged a standard calibrator 6, so that the tube 2 exiting from the head 3 immediately enters the calibrator 6 against the wall of which it is pressed by the pressure difference prevailing inside the tray 1, and inside the tube.
To activate the cooling, and at the same time suppress the effects of air bubbles on the tube, dynamic cooling is carried out by creating a flow of laminar water of tubular and rapid shape constituted by threads 7 substantially rectilinear and parallel to the axis of the tube flowing in the opposite direction to the direction of movement of the tube 2, that is to say from left to right in FIG. 1. It has been found in fact that by creating a flow of this
gender, the qualitative results obtained with regard to
tube structure were greatly improved. Not only,
marks resulting from air bubbles adhering to the surface of the
tube had disappeared but, in addition, any tendency of the tube to become
warping in the bin was eliminated.
To create this flow 7, a container is placed in the tank 1
tif which comprises a guide member 8 of tubular shape, provided
a telescopic extension 9 whose position can be
adjusted at will by movement on the guide member 8,
so that its downstream end 10 is at a set distance from the
calibrator 6. The guide 8 can extend over a part or over
the entire length of bin 1 and, at its upstream end, it is equipped
an annular chamber 11 of rectangular section which commu
nique with its interior space by an annular orifice 12. This
the latter is limited by a frustoconical internal face 13 and by
internal faces of chamber 11 and guide 8 which form between them
an angle of 900 and have a common circular edge 14.
The internal wall 15 of the chamber 11 has an internal diameter which
is slightly lower than that of guide 8, but which is still
greater than that of the plastic tube 2, so that this
wall forms a diaphragm separating an upstream chamber 16 from
the internal space of the guide 8. The walls of the upstream chamber 16
are formed in one piece with those of the annular chamber 11 and
the guide 8. However, the construction of the device is not shown
felt here only schematically. The entire system is
fixed to the wall of tank 1 which is opposite to that which carries the cali
breur 6. The upstream chamber opens into the space at its base
internal of tank 1. It therefore fills with water and thanks to the fact that it
is closed at the top, avoids the presence of bubbles
air in this room.
The water level in tank 1, which is
adjusted by the suction tube 5, will therefore preferably be at
a height greater than the highest point of the room
upstream 16 and the annular chamber 11.
A pumping circuit comprising a suction tube
tion 17, a pump 18 and a discharge pipe 19, allows
draw water into the bottom of tank 1 and pump it back into the
annular chamber 11. This circuit does not affect the vacuum pump.
Alternatively, it could also be supplied with fresh water. The
discharge pressure will be adjusted according to the flow rate of the
pump and the section of the minimum passage between the edge 14 and the surface 13, so that the forced flow between the annular chamber 11 and the inside of the guide 8 takes the form of an oblique or parallel jet to the guide 8 , and creates in this constricted passage and at the upstream end of the guide 8 a depression which drives the water from the upstream chamber 16 along the tube 2 to form the flow designated by 7. As usual, the evacuation of the heat taken up by the cooling water is supplied by supplying the vacuum tank with cold water. The surplus is then evacuated from the tank by the vacuum pump.
The arrangement described, which allows water to circulate rapidly along the tube 2, causes a centering effect of the tube 2, completely eliminates the bubbles adhering to its surface and, moreover, activates its cooling.
It makes it possible to reduce the length of the tanks and consequently to reduce the space requirement and the cost price of the installations, especially when it is a question of installations working at high speed.
In addition, this arrangement improves the quality of the extruded tubes.
The device shown in fig. 2 is of the same kind as that of FIG. 1, although tubular flow is induced differently. We see in fig. 2 on the right side, the end of a closed tank 20 maintained in depression by means similar to those of tank 1. Behind this tank 20 is located a second open tank 21, so that the water it contains is at atmospheric pressure. The calibrator through which the tube 22 enters the tank 20 is not shown in the drawing and its constitution is unimportant as regards cooling. Between the tanks 21 and 20 is disposed a guide tube 23 which is tightly fixed to the vertical walls of the two tanks. The length of this tube can be several meters. At its straight or downstream end, the tube 23 enters the tank 20.
The same applies to its left or upstream end, which enters the tank 21 and carries a diaphragm 24, the diameter of the opening 25 is chosen according to the diameter of the tube 22 and the result which it is desired to achieve. It will be noted that the tank 21 can also be equipped with one or more rollers such as the roller 26 intended to prevent the tube 22 from moving under the effect of the push of the water in the tank 21 and to rise to the surface of the water. Rollers of this kind will be provided when the device shown in FIG. 2 will be used for cooling a tube or a profile made of a flexible plastic material, such as PVC. At the left end of the tank 21 is an orifice 27 adjusted to the diameter of the tube and through which the tube 22 comes out.
Due to the vacuum maintained inside the tank 20 by a vacuum pump, the water flows through the diaphragm 25 and into the tube 23 in the same way as in the guide 8 of the.
fig. 1. It forms rectilinear threads 28 whose dynamic effect is to keep the tube 22 centered inside the guide member 23. On the other hand, the prolonged residence time in a state subjected to vacuum avoids the deformation of the tube, especially when it is made of a very flexible material such as flexible PVC. The tube 22 can thus be driven along a rectilinear trajectory without coming into contact with a material member and consequently without risking being marked as long as it is not sufficiently cooled. This avoids any risk of friction of the still soft extruded materials against the walls of the guide 23.
In this case also, the fact of creating a tubular flow along the tube 22 and in the opposite direction of its displacement makes it possible to reduce the size of the installation, activates the cooling and improves the quality of the finished product.
Of course, it will be necessary to provide a pumping circuit taking up the water in the tank 20 to discharge it into the tank 21. It will also be noted that the tank 21 will not necessarily be a tank at atmospheric pressure but could, the if necessary, also be a tank under vacuum, the vacuum being lower than that which is maintained in the tank 20.
