EMI3.3

The present invention relates to the production of new asymmetrical piperidyl phosphites and their use as stabilizers of organic material against thermo-oxidative and light-induced degradation.
It is Z. B. from DT-OS 1 929 928 or from GB-PS 1 399 239 known to use piperidyl phosphites as stabilizers in synthetic polymers. However, the known compounds are very sensitive to hydrolysis, which leads to poor storage stability and poorly reproducible effectiveness.
A class of unsymmetrical aryl-containing piperidyl phosphites has now been found which are particularly suitable both as processing stabilizers and as light stabilizers, have good color properties and also have astonishing resistance to hydrolysis.
The new compounds correspond to the general formula I.

and subsequent acylation with an acyl chloride of the formula RaCl are introduced.
The phosphites of the formula VII are known substances and can, for. B. prepared by methods which are described in Houben-Weyl, XII, 2, page 46ff (1964).
The compounds of the formula I protect organic polymers against light-induced aging even in small amounts. The light aging of organic polymers can lead on the one hand to a degradation and an associated deterioration in the mechanical properties and on the other hand to discoloration of the polymers. Both signs of aging can occur side by side. Amazingly, the compounds of the formula I are also suitable as processing stabilizers.
Polymers whose light aging is delayed or prevented by the compounds of the formula I according to the invention are, for. B. the following classes relevant in technology:
Polymers derived from mono- or doubly unsaturated hydrocarbons. Halogen-containing vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl chloride. Polymers which are derived from α, β-unsaturated acids and their derivatives, such as polyacrylates and polymethacrylates, polyacrylamides and polyacrylonitrile.
Polymers that are derived from unsaturated alcohols or their acyl derivatives or acetals. Homopolymers and copolymers derived from epoxies, such as polyethylene oxide, polyacetals, polyphenylene oxides, polyurethanes and polyureas, polycarbonates, polysulfones. Polyamines and copolyamides which are derived from diamines and dicarboxylic acids and / or from aminocarboxylic acids or the corresponding lactams. Polyesters which are derived from dicarboxylic acids and dialcohols and / or from hydroxycarboxylic acids or the corresponding lactones. Crosslinked polymers which are derived from aldehydes on the one hand and phenols, ureas and melamines on the other. Alkyd resins.
Unsaturated polyester resins, which are derived from copolyesters of saturated and unsaturated dicarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols, and vinyl compounds as crosslinking agents, as well as their halogen-containing, flame-retardant modifications. Natural polymers, such as cellulose, rubber, and their polymer-homologous chemically modified derivatives, such as cellulose acetates, cellulose propionates and cellulose butyrates, or cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose.
Preferred polymers are high and low density polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutadiene, polyurethanes, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and its copolymers, and mixtures thereof.
Examples of polymers which can be protected against photoaging by the compounds according to the invention are given in DT-OS 2427 853, pages 15-17.
The new compounds are added to the substrates in a concentration of 0.005 to 5% by weight, calculated on the material to be stabilized. Preferably from 0.01 to 1.0, particularly preferably from 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of the compound
EMI3.2
with about one mole of a phosphite of the formula VII
EMI3.3
The symbols X and Y have the same meaning as in formula I. Z denotes C1-C4 alkoxy or halogen.
a) If Z means C1-C4 alkoxy, such as methoxy, ethoxy or butoxy, the reaction is carried out by strong bases, such as. B.
Lithium amide, sodium amide, sodium methoxide or sodium hydride catalized. The reaction can be carried out without a solvent at 70-1800 ° C., preferably at 80-1500 ° C., at normal pressure or under reduced pressure. However, an inert organic solvent can also be used. The reaction temperature is preferably 120-1500 C.
Suitable solvents are all organic solvents that cannot react with the reactants of the formulas VI and VII, such as. B. aromatic, such as toluene or xylene, cycloaliphatic, such as decalin, amides such as dimethylformamide or hexamethylphosphoric triamide. The same basic catalysts mentioned above come into consideration.
b) If Z is halogen, such as chlorine, the reaction is preferably carried out at -10 to + 200 C in the presence of a base in a solvent. Tertiary nitrogen bases, such as triethylamine or diethylaniline, are particularly suitable as bases. It is also possible to use the piperidine of the formula VI as the base. The solvents used are ethers such as dioxane, tetrahydrofuran or diethyl ether; aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene or xylene; Amides such as dimethylformamide or hexamethylphosphoric triamide, or aliphatic hydrocarbons such as hexane, are possible.
The 4-hydroxypiperidines of the formula VI can be prepared from the corresponding 4-oxopiperidines of the formula VIII by known methods
EMI3.4
by reduction, e.g. B. catalytic hydrogenation can be produced via Raney nickel.
The piperidine of the formula VIII, wherein X is hydrogen, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine is z. B. prepared by the method described in US 3,513,170.
In this case, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrimide is hydrolytically rearranged in the presence of an acidic catalyst. It is also z. B. from DT-OS 2429 937 known to produce 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine directly from ammonia and acetone in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
Compounds of the formula VIII in which X is not hydrogen can be prepared by substitution from 4,4,6,6-tetramethyl4-oxopiperidine. These are the usual substitution reactions for secondary amines, although these, due to the steric hindrance and calculated on the material to be stabilized, are incorporated into it.
The incorporation can take place after the polymerization, for example by mixing the compounds and, if appropriate, further additives into the melt according to the methods customary in the art, before or during the shaping, or by applying the dissolved or dispersed compounds to the polymer, optionally with subsequent addition Evaporation of the solvent.
The new compounds can also be added to the polymers to be stabilized in the form of a masterbatch which contains these compounds, for example, in a concentration of 2.5 to 25% by weight.
In the case of crosslinked polyethylene, the compounds are added before crosslinking.
The compounds obtained by the process according to the invention can also be used with other additives, it being possible to form synergistic mixtures.
Examples of further additives with which the stabilizers which can be used according to the invention can be used together are:
Antioxidants such as simple 2,6-dialkylphenols, derivatives of alkylated hydroquinones, hydroxylated thiodiphenyl ethers, alkylidene bisphenols, O-, N- and S-benzyl compounds, hydroxybenzylated malonic esters, hydroxybenzyl aromatics, s-triazine compounds, amides of the ss- (3.5 -Di tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl-propionic acid, ester of, B- (3,5- di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid, ester of ss- (5-tert-butyl-4- hydroxy-3-methylphenyl) propionic acid, esters of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, acylaminophenols,

The 0.1 mm thick test film is produced from this 0.5 mm film under exactly the same conditions.
Sections of 60 X 44 mm each are punched out of this and exposed in the Xenotest 150. These test specimens are removed from the exposure apparatus at regular intervals and checked for their carbonyl content in an IR spectrophotometer. The increase in the carbonyl extinction at 5.85 es on exposure is a measure of the photooxidative degradation of the polymer [s. L.

100 parts of polypropylene propathene HF 20 from ICI are mixed homogeneously with 0.1 part of the stabilizers from Table IV below and mixed 5 times in a single-screw extruder at max. Granulated at 2600 C and 100 rpm in succession. The melt index (M.I.) of the material is measured after each 1st, 3rd and 5th extrusion. The load is 2160 g at 2300 C, the M.I. is in g / 10 min.
specified.
The granules obtained after the 1st, 3rd and 5th extrusion are assessed visually for their discoloration. For the color assessment in Table IV, an empirical color scale was used in which 5 colorlessness, 4 a just perceptible slight discoloration, 3, 2, 1 a successively stronger discoloration.
