Description

Fig. 3 einen Vorsatzbogen in perspektivischer Darstellung.

Process for the perfect binding of brochures and books
The subject matter of the present invention is a method for the adhesive binding of brochures and books with the end sheet intact on the spine, the book block being conveyed between clamping plates via a trimming and gluing station.

In the production of perfect-bound books, the problem arises of combining the end-sheets with the undamaged spine fold with the remaining printed sheets of the book block with the least possible manual or mechanical effort. A flyleaf with an intact spine fold gives the book an aesthetic appearance and high rigidity. Various solutions have become known for attaching end sheets with an intact spine fold.

According to a known solution, an end sheet is glued to the side of the first and last printed sheet. The fold of the end sheet is set back in relation to the back fold of the printed sheets by the cutting depth of the trimming station. This solution makes it possible to collate the complete book block, including the end-sheets, on a gathering machine and then to feed this book block to the further processing stations. With this solution, however, a special work step is necessary for the unification of the first and last printed sheets with the associated end sheets before the book block is assembled. Furthermore, in the finished book, the side adhesive strip between the end sheet and the first or last printed sheet remains visible.

According to another known solution, the printed sheets are first put together to form a book block and then glued or thread-stitched. The end-sheets are then attached to this book block in a separate operation.

According to another known solution, the end sheets are combined with the book block after the book block has been trimmed and before it is glued. As a result, the clamping jaws between which the book blocks are held must be opened in continuously operating machines, which endangers the alignment of the printed sheets and requires additional devices for feeding the end-sheets.

According to a further known solution, the end sheets are brought together with the printed sheets and passed between clamping jaws over the various processing stations. The jaws are included
Provided suction cups to hold the front end sheets in front of the trimming station and to lower the printed sheets by the cutting depth of the subsequent trimming station.

The present invention resides like the foregoing
Solutions based on the task of producing a perfect-bound brochure or book in a continuous, mechanized production process with intact front end sheets on the spine.

According to the invention, this purpose is achieved in that the end-sheets are folded in a Z-shape (with a rebate, the length of the rebate being approximated, but at least equal to the cutting depth at the trimming station, and that the folded end-sheets are attached to the book block before the trimming station .

The invention is explained by way of example with the aid of the accompanying schematic drawing. Show it:
1 shows a view of a book block with two attachment sheets between two open clamping jaws,
FIG. 2 shows the same representation as FIG. 1, the clamping jaws being closed and
Fig. 3 is a front end sheet in perspective.

As the drawing shows, a book block 1 is clamped between two clamping jaws 2 for processing its spine and guided over a processing station with a rotating knife 3. Such devices for the adhesive binding of books and brochures are described, for example, in British patent specification 774 266. Before the clamping jaws 2 are pressed together, the end sheets 4 are placed against the book block 1 at the front and back (Fig.

1), the book block 1 with the end sheet 4 being pushed against a table surface 5. Then the clamping jaws 2 are closed and the book block 1 with the end sheet 4 is fed to further processing. As can be seen in particular from FIG. 3, the end sheet is folded in a Z-shape (Leprello fold) and has an overfold 6 on its back. The length of the overfold 6 is approximated, but at least equal to the cutting depth S by which the book block spine is cut by the knife 3 at the cutting station. As a result, the spine fold of the end sheet 4 remains intact while the book block spine is being processed. At the gluing station following the trimming station, the printed sheets and the end sheets are connected to one another by applying glue on the back and then fed for further processing.

In order to collect the end-sheets with the printed sheets on a gathering machine, they can also be connected to each other at the top and bottom by a strip of adhesive, which prevents the end-sheets from gaping when they are placed on the gathering machine.
