EMI1.1

Process for the preparation of substituted decahydroquinones
The present invention relates to a process for the production of new substituted decahydroquinolines which can be used as active ingredients for combating weeds and grass weeds in rice crops.
The new substituted decahydroquinolines correspond to formula I:
EMI1.1
In this formula: R is a lower alkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, n the number 0 or 1.
The term substituted decahydroquinolines is used here and below for alkylthio-carbonyl-decahydroquinolines and -decahydro-isoquinolines.
Straight-chain or branched alkyl radicals which have no more than 4 carbon atoms, such as methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl and tert-butyl, are referred to as lower. Rest.
The substituted decahydroquinolines of the formula I are obtained according to the invention by adding a decahydroquinoline of the formula II:
EMI1.2
with a thiocarbonic acid halide of the formula III:
EMI1.3
in the presence of an acid-binding agent.
The thiocarbonic acid halide can also only be used in situ, from its formation components, phosgene and an alkali metal salt of a mercaptan of the formula IV:
R-SH (IV) can be produced. In formulas II to IV, R and n have the meanings given under formula I, and Hal in formula III represents chlorine or bromine. It is advisable to carry out the reactions in a solvent and / or diluent which is inert towards the reactants. The type of distribution agent to be used is largely determined by the acid-binding agent used in the reaction. If organic bases, such as tertiary amines, are used, it is advisable to also use organic solvents. In the case of inorganic bases, water and aqueous mixtures of water-miscible organic solvents are suitable.
In general, the following tertiary amines can serve as acid-binding agents: pyridine and pyridine bases, triethylamine, etc .; The particular decahydroquinoline of the formula II, used in excess in the reaction, can also serve as an acid-binding agent. The hydroxides and carbonates of the alkali and alkaline earth metals come from inorganic bases, primarily sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, as well as the hydroxides and carbonates of lithium, barium, strontium, magnesium and quaternary ammonium compounds, which react as bases in the presence of water , for example tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide, etc., into consideration.
The following solvents can be used: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylenes, petroleum ether, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ethers and ethereal solvents such as dialkyl ethers, tetrahydrofuran; as water-miscible solvents are: alkanols, ketones, etc.
When a decahydroquinoline of the formula II is reacted with phosgene and an alkali metal salt of a mercaptan, the decahydroquinoline or decahydroisoquinoline-1-carboxylic acid halide obtained as an intermediate can be reacted with an alkali metal salt of a mercaptan of the formula IV without further purification.
The appropriate reactions of a substituted decahydroquinoline of the formula II with a thiocarbonic acid halide of the formula III or its formation components are carried out at temperatures of 905 to 1000C, preferably between 0 and 300C, those with carbon oxysulphide and alkylating agent between -20 and 1000C, preferably between 0 and 300C.
The new substituted decahydroquinolines of the formula I have excellent herbicidal properties and are particularly suitable for combating weeds and grass weeds in rice crops (water and dry rice crops). These active ingredients include weed species that are difficult to control in rice crops: for example in Wosserreiskui; uren Echinochloa sp., Eleocharis sp., Panicum sp., Cyperaceae, Paspalum sp., Etc .; in dry rice cultures also Echinochloa sp., Digitaria sp., Brachiaria sp., Sida sp., Cyperaceae, Ac nthosperum sp., etc.
Since the active ingredients for warm-blooded animals, fish and fish food animals are non-toxic in the usual application concentrations, gradually kill the plants and thus do not seriously impair the oxygen balance and the biological equilibrium, they are very well suited for use in water rice cultures. In addition, the active ingredients have a broad spectrum of activity against various types of aquatic weeds, e.g. against emersed plants, aquatic plants with and without floating leaves, submerged plants, algae, etc.
The broad spectrum of action of the new substituted decahydroquinolines of the formula I allows them to be used for the important control of weeds and grass weeds on the areas surrounding rice crops, such as ditches, canal beds, dams, etc.
These active ingredients not only destroy the grass weeds mentioned, which occur in rice crops, but also other grass-like and broad-leaved weeds.
The active ingredients can be used in the preparation of the rice beds and, after the plants have emerged, also to destroy existing weeds. Neither the rice grown in water nor in dry cultures suffers from the application of the new substituted decahydroquinoline in the usual application rates, no damage, and in high application rates largely reversible damage.
The application rates vary and depend on the time of application, they are between 0.1-10 kg of active ingredient per hectare, when applied before the plants emerge up to 1 kg of active ingredient per hectare and after the plants emerge at 3 to 10 kg of active ingredient per hectare , whereby more than 10 kg of active ingredient per hectare must be used for a total destruction of all weeds, for example on the cultivated land adjacent to fallow land. The crop rotation, which is important for rice cultivation, can take place without impairment when using the new active ingredients.
Substituted decahydroquinolines of the formula I have not yet been described. In the American
Patent specifications No. 3,133,947 and 3,198,786 describe herbicidal polymethylene thiocarbamates and polymethyl oxo-thiocarbamates, but their known effect is on grass-like weeds when the active ingredients are applied before germination, respectively. limited to the emergence of the plants (preemergence).
To produce herbicidal agents, the active ingredients are mixed with suitable carriers and / or distribution agents. To widen the spectrum of activity, other herbicides can be added to these agents, for example from the pure triazines, such as halo-diamino-s-triazines, alkoxy- and alkylthio-diamino-s-triazines, triazoles, diazines, such as uracils, aliphatic carboxylic acids and Halocarboxylic acids, halogenated benzoic acids and phenylacetic acids, aryloxyalkanecarboxylic acids, hydrazides, amides, nitriles, esters of such carboxylic acids, carbamic and thiocarbamic esters, ureas, etc.
The following examples illustrate the preparation processes for the new substituted decahydroquinolines of the formula I. Unless otherwise noted, temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example I.
45 g of decahydroquinoline are dissolved in 7C; 0 ml of petroleum ether and a solution of 13 g of sodium hydroxide in 100 ml of water is used. 40.5 g of ethyl chlorothioformate are added dropwise to the mixture with vigorous stirring and cooling (10-15). After the reaction has ended, the mixture is stirred for a further 30 minutes and the phases are separated.
the organic phase washes neutral, dries and the petroleum ether evaporates in vacuo. The remaining oil is distilled in vacuo. 65 g (88%) of 1 - (ethylthio-carbonyl) -decahydroquinoline are obtained as a colorless oil nD20 = 1.5315.

The conversion of this intermediate product in petroleum ether with an aqueous solution of 27 g of sodium mercaptide yields 61 g of colorless oil, the physical constants of which correspond to those of Example 1.
According to the methods described in these examples, using the appropriate amounts of decahydroquinoline or decahydro-isoquinoline and thiocarbonic acid halide of the formula III or carbon sulfoxide and alkylating agent, the compounds of the formula I listed in the following table are prepared: Shrinking point compounds: boiling point
