Kopolymerisat 75 Gew.Tle Feststoff
Melaminharz 25 Gew.Tle Feststoff
Titanweiss 83 Gew.Tle hergestellt.

Process for the production of an improved adhesive binder for stoving enamels
The invention relates to a process for the production of an improved resin binder for stoving enamels, using a polyether glycol of the general formula HO (RO) nH, in which R is an alkyl radical with at least 3 carbon atoms and n> 2 with double molar amount of a mono -olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or the anhydride thereof esterified, the resulting dicarboxylic acid esterified with a double molar amount of a glycidyl ester of an α, α-dialkyl-substituted alkanecarboxylic acid of the general formula
EMI1.1
represent saturated alkyl radicals and copolymerized the resulting unsaturated diester of a mono-olefinically unsaturated polymerizable compound.
The mono-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride used for the esterification can be partially replaced by a saturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride. As a result, the degree of unsaturation (the functionality) of the monomer and thus the branching of the copolymer can be regulated.
The polyether glycol used is preferably a polyether glycol of the general formula HO (R-O) nH, where R is the group -C4Hs and n = 10-20.
Cardura-E is preferably used as the glycidyl ester of an α, α-dialkyl-substituted alkanecarboxylic acid.
Cardura-E is given using the general formula
EMI1.2
represent saturated alkyl radicals, the total number of carbon atoms of the acidic portion of the compound being 9-11.
If the thermoplastic copolymer obtained is mixed in a known manner with a thermosetting resin, which resin can react with this copolymer to form a three-dimensional crosslinking, like a melamine resin, stoving enamels are obtained which result in films that are very resistant to chemicals, such as alkalis, detergents and fats.
This favorable property is ascribed to the steric hindrance of the ester groups already present in small numbers in the copolymer. The ether bridges created in the film, with z. B. a melamine resin, of course, result in good chemical resistance.
The special feature of the present resins is that, in addition to excellent chemical resistance, they also have excellent mechanical properties such as hardness, elasticity and impact strength. These last properties are attributed to the presence of the polyether glycol.
Examples of mono-olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids which can be used to prepare the monomer are maleic acid, fumaric acid, etc.
called.
Phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, succinic acid or succinic anhydride can be used as the saturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride.
The acid anhydride is preferably used because in this case no water is split off during the reaction. The reaction temperature can then remain below 200 ° C., which reduces the possibility of side reactions.
The following may be mentioned as mono-olefinically unsaturated monomers for copolymerization with the compound produced: styrene, vinyl toluene, acrylates, methacrylates, maleinates, fumarates, vinyl esters from versatic acid, etc.
In the case of copolymerization, it should be borne in mind that it is necessary to copolymerize a small amount of an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, such as 2w6% by weight of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or crotonic acid, so that the acid number of the copolymer is 40 at most. The carboxyl groups that are required for the subsequent reaction with the thermosetting resin are then present in the copolymer.
It is also noted that even a relatively low content of the monomer produced in the finished copolymer has a favorable influence on the properties of the stoved paint film.
In general, a content of 1030% by weight of the monomer produced in the copolymer is sufficient, this content being higher when some of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid is replaced by a saturated dicarboxylic acid.
Suitable copolymers are: a copolymer of: 40-75% by weight of styrene, 120% by weight of acrylate, 2-6% by weight of methacrylic acid and 1W30% by weight of the monomer produced; and a copolymer of: 66% by weight of styrene, 15% by weight of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate,% by weight of methacrylic acid and 13% by weight of the monomer produced.
The monomer is produced in a simple manner in several stages. First, a dicarboxylic acid is prepared from 1 mole of polyether glycol and 2 moles of unsaturated dioarboxylic anhydride. The reaction is complete at 120-130 OC and is exothermic. When the exotherm has stopped, the reaction is complete. The temperature of the dicarboxylic acid formed is now brought to 170-175 ° C., whereupon 2 mol of glycidyl ester are slowly added. This reaction is also exothermic. When all the glycidyl ester has been added, the acid number is determined. This should be a maximum of 5.
The copolymerization takes place in solution with a peroxide as a catalyst and optionally a chain transfer agent such as lauryl mercaptan. If the monomer peroxide mixture is used for a prolonged period, e.g. B.
2-3 hours added to the boiling solvent (mixture). you don't need a chain transmitter.
The amount of solvent is chosen so that the solids content at the end of the copolymerization is 50-75% by weight.
Preferably, butanol and xylene are copolymerized in a mixture of equal parts by weight with a monomer concentration of sa% by weight. With 3% by weight of di-tert-butyl peroxide as a catalyst and 0.8% by weight of lauryl mercaptan (based on the total weight of the monomers), copolymerization is carried out for 7 hours at the boiling point (118-122 ° C.).
The copolymerization can be followed by determining the solids content of the reaction mixture. The reaction is complete when this solids content is at least 50%.
To produce stoving enamels, the copolymers produced are mixed with a thermosetting resin, which can react with it to form a three-dimensional crosslinking. Such resins may be mentioned: melamine resins, urea resins, epoxy resins, isocyanates, etc.
A few examples now follow, in which it is also demonstrated that it is essential to produce a monomer precursor from a polyether glycol with a sufficiently high molecular weight.
If the molecular weight of the polyether glycol is too low or if only a glycol with a higher molecular weight is used, the stoved films do not have good mechanical properties. In particular, the impact strength is then insufficient (Examples V and VI).
If another compound of higher molecular weight is taken instead of the polyether glycol, e.g. B. a dimeric fatty acid (M = 600) just as poorly good mechanical properties are obtained (Example VII).
Examples I and II explain the influence of the molecular weight of the polyether glycol on the mechanical properties of the stoved film. Examples II and IV demonstrate that the precursor can also be produced as a mixture of two monomers with different functionality (III) and that the functionality can be regulated by incorporating a saturated acid (IV).
The properties of the paint film mentioned in the examples were measured after baking for t / 2 hours at 150.degree.
The stoving enamel was made in a normal known manner with a melamine resin and titanium white in the following proportions:
Copolymer 75 parts by weight of solid
Melamine resin 25 parts by weight of solid
Titanium white 83 parts by weight manufactured.
In all cases, very good flowability, excellent gloss, gloss yellowness and very good yellowing resistance were obtained, as well as good chemical resistance. The paint can easily be applied using the usual methods.
The mechanical properties of the stoved films are tested according to known and established methods, namely the elasticity according to Erichsen (in mm), the hardness according to Koenig (in seconds) and the impact strength according to Rel (in inch pounds).
The following combination of properties can be viewed as good to very good.
