Procedure for the investigation of non-magnetic substances
The patent relates to a method for examining non-magnetic stairs, a device for carrying out the method and an application of the same.
According to the method according to the invention, the substance to be examined is brought into the field of a self-induction coil, the reduction in the quality of this coil caused by idols is determined and used as a measure of the property of the substance to be examined. As is well known, the quality of a self-induction coil is understood to mean the ratio of the reactive component to the active component of the impedance of the coil. This ratio is expediently measured with alternating current, in the present method preferably with high-frequency current.
One has a. The hysteresis losses of ferromagnetic materials have already been determined in a similar way. However, it could not be foreseen that properties of non-magnetic materials, for example the moisture content or the content of other friamd materials, impurities or desired components, e.g. B. of plastics, can be determined in this way. To determine the moisture content of wood, its direct current resistance has already been measured. For this purpose, electrodes must be firmly attached to the wood, for example needle-shaped probes must be pushed into the same.
The dielectric constant of the material to be examined has already been determined for similar purposes by placing it in the field of a capacitor, i.e. between two electrodes. For this purpose, the material to be examined must be accessible on two opposite sides so that measurements are made in a homogeneous field and all parts of the sample influence the result to the same extent.
With the method according to the invention it is not necessary to attach electrodes firmly to the sample, and it is sufficient if the sample is accessible on one side, in which case a flat pulse is expediently used as a self-induction coil.
The device according to the invention has a measuring space which is used to receive the substance to be examined and which is arranged in the field of a self-induction coil connected to a coil quality indicator.
The present method can be used to examine substances, in particular plastics, for their moisture content or the content of other foreign substances, impurities or desired components.
An exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in the drawing. In connection therewith, the method according to the invention and its application according to the invention are also described, for example. It shows: Fig. 1 the circuit of a device for examining non-magnetic materials,
FIG. 2 shows the correlation between the quality 6 of the self-induction coil of the device according to FIG. 1 and the deflection a of the galvanometer of this device.
The device according to FIG. 1 has a cylinder coil 1 which is wound onto a hollow cylindrical body 2. The cavity of this body 2 forms the measuring space 3. The coil 1, in series with a variable capacitor 4, forms a branch of a differential measuring bridge, the other branch of which is formed by an ohmic resistor 5.
The differential transformer of the bridge is denoted by 6; it has a primary winding 61 with a center tap 62 and a secondary winding 63. A high-frequency generator 7, to whose frequency (for example 1 megahertz) the branch 1, 4 is tuned, serves to feed the bridge. Resistance 5 corresponds to the active component of the impedance of branches 1, 4 at this frequency and empty measuring space 3. The input of a high-frequency amplifier 8, whose gain is adjustable and whose output feeds a rectifier 9, is connected to secondary winding 63. The current supplied by the rectifier 9 can be read on a galvanometer 10.
Since branch 1,4 is tuned to the frequency of the high frequency generator. and the resistance 5 corresponds to the active component of the impedance of this branch 1, 4 at this frequency and empty measuring space 3, the bridges 1, 4, 5 and 6 are in equilibrium and the galvanometer 9 points to 0 as long as there is no material to be examined 3 bafindet in measuring space. However, if the quality of the coil decreases under the effect of a material brought into the measuring space, the galvanometer 10 deflects.
2 shows an example of the correlation between the deflection a of the galvanometer 10 and the quality O of the coil 1, the bridge being calibrated with a coil quality of 200 and the galvanometer showing full deflection (100 scale divisions) when the coil quality is approximately 140 is.
In order to use the device described for the purpose of determining the moisture content, e.g. B. of plastic powder or granules to calibrate, the measuring chamber 3 is successively filled with sample materials with different known moisture content.
The galvanometer 10 deflects each time.
The deflection is based partly on a change in the reactive component and partly on a change in the active component of the branch 1, 4, which is due to a change in the quality Q of the coil 1. The first part is balanced by adjusting the capacitor 4 to the smallest deflection of the galvanometer 10. The remaining part, ie the deflection of the galvanometer 10 that remains after this setting of the capacitor 4 is a measure of the change in the coil length and serves as a measure of the moisture content of the sample. In this way a calibration curve is obtained from a number of samples.
In order to determine the still unknown moisture content of an otherwise similar sample, this is filled into the measuring chamber 3, the capacitor 4 is set to the smallest deflection of the galvanometer 10 and the associated moisture content of the sample is read from the calibration curve for this deflection. Instead of using a calibration curve, the galvanometer can of course. can also be calibrated directly; several scales can also be used for the direct reading of various properties of samples of various types. exhibit.
To simplify the measurement process, retuning of the capacitor 4 can be dispensed with, both during lighting and during actual measurement. The setting of the capacitor 4 can also take place automatically, in that the automatic sharpening known from radio receivers is used analogously.
To avoid errors, which can occur, for example, due to fluctuations in the operating voltages of the generator 7 or due to aging phenomena of the device, the gain of the amplifier 8 can be changed, and a sample serving as a normal or a test specimen is shown to which a certain deflection of the galvanometer 10 is assigned. With this sample in the measuring room 3, the amplification is then determined before each measurement. ad of the amplifier 8 is set so that the galvanometer 10 shows the deflection associated with the normal.
Under certain conditions, a distinction can also be made between different properties, namely when their influence on the coil quality is frequency-dependent to a different extent. In this case, a generator 7 is used, with which several different frequencies can be generated, the capacitor 4 and, if the effective resistance of the coil 1 is frequency-dependent, the resistor 5 must also be readjusted.
A variant of the device described above has, instead of the cylinder coil 1 shown in FIG. 1, a flat coil, one end of which is adjacent to the measuring area. This variant is suitable for examining samples that are only accessible on one side. The cylindrical measuring space 3 of the device shown is particularly suitable for the examination of powdery, granular, cylindrical or hollow cylindrical material, such as rods and tubes, which are brought individually into the measuring space if their diameter is only a little smaller than that of the measuring space, or which are brought into the measuring room in the form of a bundle if their diameter is deliberately smaller than that of the measuring room.
The cylindrical measuring space is very advantageous for all these materials, in contrast to the space of a capacitor field, which has a rectangular cross section and is elongated to avoid stray fields, in which the cavity can be adapted to tubes or rods and easily filled by a tube bundle, although it is suitable for powder and granular material is suitable, but is cumbersome to clean in all cases.
If the method described is used to examine the moisture content of plastics, the moisture can be contained both on the surface and in the material, for example from a water layer or a content of another liquid, e.g. B. a solvent or a plasticizer exist.
Liquids, gases and vapors can also be examined using the method described.
An example of application is the determination of the density of gases and vapors.
